Naghdi - Hayward - Hamilton in the Spectator
capybara replied to Geoff's topic in Ballet / Dance news & information
Yes he was and weren't we lucky - but he did dance in the corps also for his first couple of years. And Cesar Corrales, also at ENB but under different management, was made a Principal at 20 but, unlike Vadim, was never really in the corps. To a less obvious extent, Rina Kanehara and Francesca Velicu (ENB too) are also getting leading roles at a very young age (Sugar Plum currently) and Rina, who danced it last year, is exquisite. The approach at the RB and BRB seems to be more cautious and most young dancers go through every rung of the ladder. This has its advantages also as they gain a lot of stage experience. -
Naghdi - Hayward - Hamilton in the Spectator
capybara replied to Geoff's topic in Ballet / Dance news & information
Francesca Hayward's first wonderful Alice was in December 2014/January 2015 (with Muntagirov). This was nearer to 4 years after she joined the RB in Spring 2011 by which time she was a Soloist. And, of course, Melissa Hamilton took two seasons' leave of absence, not just last year. It is great to see more coverage for ballet and its stars but the three lovely artists featured in this article really do deserve more accurate treatment.- 36 replies

Unfortunately for us, in some ways, Osipova is likely now to be concentrating on the Project Polunin venture which is on at the Coliseum next week. So I guess that, when we see her on the 11th December, she will be discovering Sylvia anew. But, meanwhile, I'm feeling the need for more comment on how it went last night (Osipova/Bonelli/Hirano). And has anyone now seen all three casts?

ENB Big Give fundraiser for new Forsythe work
capybara replied to alison's topic in Ballet / Dance news & information
A few days into this campaign ENB has already raised over £75,000 via the BigGive double your money site, with only £900 or so still available to be doubled. -
I was planning not to write much until I had seen all three casts but, since you ask, Sim........ I thought that Reece Clarke made a very assured debut indeed as Aminta last night. He inhabited the role, danced really well and complemented his Sylvia in the pas de deux with great consideration and confidence. Last season he was an 'emerging artist' in the eyes of the critics. Last night, he showed everyone that he had well and truly 'arrived'.

Thank you so much, Darlex. This is the website I found but I didn't realise that, for a 'realisation' in 2004, I needed to click 1952! ! ! So, to update my previous list: 2004 and 2005 Bussell/Cope/Soares then Bussell/Bolle/Soares Yanowsky/Makhateli/Avis Nunez/Pennefather/Samodurov 2008 Nunez/Makhateli or Pennefather/Soares Lamb/Bonelli/Samodurov or Gartside Cuthbertson/Makhateli/Avis 2010 Nunez/Pennefather/ Avis Lamb/Bonell/Gartside Cuthbertson/Polunin/Whitehead Yanowsky/Makhateli/Soares 2017 Nunez/Muntagirov/Soares Cuthbertson/Clarke/Kish Osipova/Bonelli/Hirano

RB Spring Insights date and venue changes
capybara replied to MargaretN7's topic in Ballet / Dance news & information
The problem in the unreserved seating days of the Clore and for RBS events in their Linden Studio is that queues develop very early and entry is often allowed only 10 minutes before the start. This creates problems for audience members with physical disabilities or other health issues which make it difficult for them to stand. In the case of the Clore, there were some seats within the queue. In the case of the RBS, there are only 2 seats in the entrance area and, often, people have to wait outside in Floral Street. This isn't really acceptable whatever the weather or time of year. Reserved seats are very much a feature of RBS studio performances, so much so that, when one walks in, it can feel as if RESERVED notices are everywhere. And sometimes a good number remain unoccupied. I too find the reservation of seating in the Clore a little difficult to 'take'. I don't understand why the VIPs concerned don't just have numbered tickets just like everyone else. -
I had to thin out my programmes when we last redecorated and I am struggling to remember the various casts for the three main characters in Sylvia: I have got as far as: 2004 and 2005 Bussell/Cope/ ? then Bussell/Bolle/Soares Yanowsky/Makhateli/Avis Nunez/Pennefather/? 2010 Nunez/Pennefather/ ?Soares or Avis (there are pictures of Nunez with Avis) Lamb/?/? Cuthbertson/Polunin/? ? Yanowsky/Makhateli/Avis 2017 Nunez/Muntagirov/Soares Cuthbertson/Clarke/Kish Osipova/Bonelli/Hirano People often seem to speak on here about accessing archives but I have been unsuccessful so far via ROH Collections Online. Please would readers be so kind as to help fill in the blanks?

RB Spring Insights date and venue changes
capybara replied to MargaretN7's topic in Ballet / Dance news & information
Even though the tickets I have just received have not been changed! And there will be no reserved seating (as in the bad old days of The Clore) so people will be queueing outside. -
Is there a DVD of Cranko's "Onegin" anywhere?
capybara replied to Anna C's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
Oh dear, we've started something now........ I was blown away by Cojocaru's Tatiana when she was still in her early twenties. She way she managed to age for Act 3 was also truly astonishing. With Kobborg, I always felt that he was Onegin to the very core. The RB has fielded some other wonderful Tatianas and Onegins, including Morera and Bonelli in the two most recent runs. The Lenskys I have admired the most have been Putrov, Muntagirov and Ball, although others have given us very fine readings too. My top Olgas are, however, not from the RB but both former ENB dancers: Nancy Osbaldeston (shortly after she joined the Royal Ballet of Flanders) and Ksenia Ovsyanick (in her first season in Berlin). But seeing all the names others are listing makes me wish that I had been able to travel abroad more to watch what is one of my very favourite ballets.- 114 replies

"Really well" feels like a bit of an understatement Muntagirov's glorious dancing and believable characterisation gave manly life to what is a rotten leading role. It's rare to see such glowing reviews for Aminta and his performance richly deserves everything that is being said. I feel we are so lucky to have him at the RB. He is an absolute STAR. [I've been holding back from commenting on Sylvia so far because I usually like to see more than one cast before venturing to write anything. But, now that I have, I must add that I loved every minute of it. More later in the week. ]

Completely agree, FLOSS. Interestingly, Magri and Heap graduated from the RBS and joined the RB at the same time- 13 replies

I'm afraid that I'm hopelessly confused. I guess I'll just turn up with my tickets and see what's on offer on the day. However, thanks to Bluebird, Geoff and Amelia for trying to keep us all abreast of developments. Much appreciated. -

Yes, Francesca Hayward was the Girl in Spectre de la Rose. [Tempted to comment but I only saw the rehearsal so I must resist!] -

Pedro Lapetra has been a dancer with ENB for many years and has danced Mercutio many times before. ENB announced in July that Laurretta Summerscales has taken a sabbatical year to dance with Bayerisches Staatsballett in Munich, where her husband, Yonah Acosta, is now a Principal. So far this season, Laurretta has danced Nikiya in La Bayadere, Alice in Christopher Wheeldon's production, and Kitty in Anna Karenina. She also danced 6 shows of Swan lake with Shanghai Ballet in The Netherlands (Derek Deane version), partnered by Vadim Muntagirov. I think that it is generally known that Cesar Corrales is recovering from injury. Best wishes to him. We need him on stage!
