THE LONDON BALLET CIRCLE: NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS

Recommended Posts

I’d no idea that  Aaron Watkins dancing career was with such pre-eminent ADs as Erik Bruhn, Ivan Nagy, Wayne Eagling, Nacho Duato and William Forsythe!!  And quickly followed by staging full evening of Forsythe ballets at the Kirov.  Daunting.

I was even more impressed with his expressed attitude to treating dancers as people and adults.  Also impressed with his explanation of his repertoire choices.  ENB’s future seems to be in excellent hands.

Have also just booked to see Lauretta in Nutcracker at the Coli. That 20th is very nearly sold out!!

Did Deborah Weiss once dance with Festival Ballet many years ago?
If it’s the same lady a friend and I who used to dress the corps for Festival Ballet back in the day thought she was a lovely dancer and had her ear marked for future things at the time!

Yes - her bio on Dance Tabs reads: 'Deborah Weiss is a freelance dance writer and critic, based in London. Royal Ballet School trained and a former senior soloist with London Festival Ballet and Bayerisches Staatsballett, she began writing in 1993 whilst living in Southern Germany. She has written for a number of publications including Dancing Times, The Dancer and Dance Europe.'

Deborah Weiss writes for Bachtrack and others

So she has a parallel experience to Laurretta.  Both British born and trained.  Both performed with ENB (previously London Festival Ballet) and both with Bavarian State Ballet in Munich.  (Bayerisches Staatsballett in German)

Neat!!!

The ENBS Winter Showcase rehearsal looks like a lovely programme with lots of classical ballet gems.  Wonder which pas de quatre (and which version of Raymonda) it will be. ENB has both Nureyev's Act 3 suite as well as Tamara Rojo's full length reboot in their repertoire. Of course,  it doesn't have to be from an ENB production....

There's a long and interesting interview with her on BachTrack, too.

All are welcome at the in-person conversation with Laurretta Summerscales in a week’s time … at the large studio of the RB Upper School.

Yes, I heard the ‘this meeting is being recorded’ message.

Julie Bowers shared wonderful anecdotes about Nureyev, Fonteyn, and about working with David Bintley, Monica Mason et al.

LBC video recordings are usually made available to members, 1-2 months afterwards.  Written reports are posted on the website for anyone to read, usually within a week or so.  It is dependant on the interviewee’s response time.

Loved the visit to the Acosta Dance space in Woolwich. Very easy to get to on Elizabeth Line then about 3-4 mins walk.
They  really went that extra mile to make us feel welcome.
Very exciting to see a couple of the many projects going on in the centre….. like the Acosta Danza group rehearsing Carmen…terrific!! And the coaching of pre professional ballet students to prepare for their auditions.
Many thanks to Javier Torres and the young lady who showed us around for their hard work and the unexpected tea and pastries was really delicious!

The amount and variety of opportunity which the LBC is now offering Members is astonishing. And all for a £20 p.a. membership fee (which includes free access to Zoom only talks) - plus a little extra for individual events.

I think we all know how much work is involved in delivering such a programme so many, many thanks to the hard-working Committee.

The visit to the Acosta Centre sounds amazing.  Thanks for the report @LinMM

I wish I could have joined.  It seems to me to be managed at a different level professionally, marketing wise, etc than most dance organisations.

Congratulations to Javier Torres and Carlos Acosta …. I believe they are ‘upping the game’.

Well you know how Carlos looks just amazing in his white suit which he often wears when out in theatreland well Javier looked equally amazing in his pink suit on Monday!
Was wondering whether these suits were going to be their signature at events!
Sorry if this brings the tone down a little but am not meaning to …I just love Carlos in his white suit ( was standing next to him at the Linbury last summer) he must know how how great he looks and equally Javier in pink such a lovely approachable person….though not sure the pink suit really had anything to do with that quality in him!!

Yes belonging to the LBC is one of the better things I’ve joined in the last couple of years brilliant value for money!
