  1. we had a short photo shoot in the afternoon before the opening night, so here are some photos. Looks stunning (though the photos don't do it justice)! Can't wait to see the whole thing myself, Friday evening. Jacob O'Connell © Dave Morgan. Courtesy of DanceTabs / Flickr James Pett, Fukiko Takase, Travis Clausen-Knight, Jessica Wright © Dave Morgan. 3. Thanks Quintus - it wasn't easy that's for sure. But at least it wasn't just dark gloom only, so we photographers can at least get something. And definitely agree about Begoña - she's one of my faves!
  4. It was a terrific performance in what couldn't have been easy circumstances - so a definite 'hats off' to the leads. Agree about Sarah Kundi, a dancer I've always liked since her days with Ballet Black, and she really stepped up into a striking role, strikingly danced. Leaves me wishing I could have seen more shows this run!

  7. surely asexuals wouldn't be bothered whichever way....
  8. yes, they've been to the Lialian Baylis before (I think!) My ticket already in my hand :-)
  9. in sport its common to refer to teammates as 'the boys' in mens' competitions

  11. ...and clever lighting, and a screen, and/or a mirror, can make that effect rather than needing a projection
  12. As a rule of thumb for Swan Lake, most companies will do act 2 (the lakeside, white act) pretty much the same, but with maybe slightly different patterns for the corps, and 2 or 4 'big' swans, and the white costumes can vary (and everyone disagrees what are the best style of costumes! :-) ). Act 4 back at the lakeside, again usually similar, except whether they have 'happy' endings (whether Rothbart killed, or defeated by the lover's deaths). Act 1 varies most, but maintains some key elements in all, to setup the rest of the ballet and a wide split about the 'jester' - many loathe, many like. Act 3 (black act) can vary a lot outside the grande pas de deaux for the lead couple, in costumes and steps for the national dances. But whatver company you see, as long as its a competent orchestra, the music is always sublime!
  13. I was at the last photo call for this run for the London visit of the Mariinsky Ballet (at the Royal Opera House), Aug 2017, this time for Petipa's 'La Bayadere' Here are some photos: Kimin Kim, Viktoria Tereshkina © Dave Morgan. 14. I really enjoyed the Carmen - Diana Vishneva was scintillating. Loved the half-and-half costumes for the other cast members, and generally found the piece wizzed by. I liked the musid too - so memorably used by Mats Ek later on (and seen on the RB a few years back). Striking bull ring set, with dramatic lighting, and the afore mentioned Ms Vishneva scorching up the stage - a winner for me! Infra was very balletically danced, but lacked a little 'snap' we are used to with Wayne's work. Still enjoyed it though. Paquita was a classical joy. Tereshkina always a pleasure to watch I find, and a special mention for newbie May Nagahisa, who was light as a feather and impeccable (apart from a slight wobble in the final pirouettes). A future star for sure. Current star Ekaterina Kondaurova was imperious in her solo - I could watch that several times on the trot. Corps were lovely too. Amother winner for me. So overall, a very enjoyable triple bill - can't understand why it wasn't sold out!

  16. yes, I went to one show in a 800 seat screen (there are 2 large and 6 smaller screens in my local Vue) and there were 10 of us in there; though other screenings I've attended there were more like 80-100. Mind you, Croydon isn't exactly a centre of culture unless you count clubbing, drinking and street fighting...
  17. a slip of the keyboard...
  18. Yes. I stopped when it went over £15. Last time I went I think it was £13 (when a normal ticket was £8-11, depending what time you went). Normal tix now £9-12, so as it was £18 last time I enquired, and didn't bother going in, if its now over a score, I certainly will be giving it a miss. :-(
  19. The etc etc includes.... Rod Stewart, Bryan Ferry, Joan Baez, Jimi Hendrix, (Hootie and the Blowfish lifting a verse from Idiot Wind), Adele, The Animals, Jackson Browne, Melanie, Joni Mitchell (who classed herself as an anti-fan!), Elvis, Sheryl Crow, Johnny Cash, Eric Clapton, Guns'n'Roses, Manfred Mann, Sandy Denny (and Fairport Convention), Billy Joel, Hollies, Pearl Jam, Joe Cocker, Glen Campbell, Tom Petty, Pete Seeger, Nina Simone, Neil Young, The Four Seasons, Grateful Dead, Bruce Springsteen, The White Stripes, Emmylou Harris, and even The Beatles, have all covered at least one, often many, of Dylan's songs. Well, more especially the 60s/70s ones I often still prefer the original though! :-)
