  1. Other thread is called "Pointe shoes, what I need to know"
  2. There is another thread on this forum about sewing on pointe ribbons where you will find some very useful advice, tips and help. I've looked at a pair of my daughters shoes and both ribbons seem to slant at the same angle. If you search for Grischko pointe shoes on YouTube you'll see a demonstration by Amanda on sewing pointe ribbons. This can look a bit scary and confusing but it does work. I have been sewing my dd's ribbons for years, usually pinning them, dd trying them one, me sewing them dd trying them on, me unpicking them etc until I was pointed in the direction of this demonstration. I was a but dubious but this way has worked for my daughters feet. Perhaps the way they mark the shoe will help you get the correct angle. You can still use these marks this even if you've cut the ribbons more than this method recommend. I will admit here that I found it really confusing when I sewed the ribbons on dd's first pointe shoes, and it really didn't get any better until I found the demonstration. I don't get myself in a flap anymore. If you should prick your finger and get a drop of blood you the shoe, don't panic - use a drop of your own saliva - it will get rid of the mark. Hope this helps
  3. Well done Fiz. Until the builders have gone am off the Wii fit!! Can't have them laughing at me!! Non-DD has compiled some pilates from you tube for me to have a got at. Hurry up and finish tiling my kitchen so I can have a go!
  4. We used a blow torch once, did the trick but frightened the life out of me (hubby did it). I now treat all ribbons like this for example on hand made on cards, hanging decorations on Christmas tree etc - as long as they are the same kind of material!
  5. DD started dancing at around 4 as do many children and it was fun and she enjoyed it and did alright. It wasn't until she was 12 or 13 that she turned round one day and told me she wanted to dance as a career. We knew nothing and were completely unaware of the existence of Associates, vocational schools etc and so we have been playing catch up ever since. Not all children know what they want to do in life.
  6. Wonderful news, congratulations to your dd.
  7. Spannerandpony you put it so much better than I did - wish I could have put it so eloquently. I feel exactly the same about supporting the non-dd when she was at University as well. If she doesn't make it as a writer, well she had a wonderful experience and has grown into a lovely young lady. Tad excited as she's coming home this week-end - haven't seen her since dd auditioned at Northern! Good luck to your dd with everything she does.
  8. My dd's feet have never grown very much and through lack of experience we made the dreadful mistake of not getting new pointe shoes when we should have done. Her first pair almost fell apart. Got quite a ticking off from the assistant in Bloch. Never done it since!
  9. All I'm hoping for is a dedication in my non-dd's first novel! As for the dd, well everything has been based on the "at least when she's in her old age she can look back and say she tried" ethos and you know, it's been fun for us along the way too. We uprooted ourselves and moved ourselves to a different county and if she doesn't make it well we had an adventure too.
  10. I've always used the tubes until recently I was persuaded to use the bus. All I can say is that I really enjoyed the journey. It may have been longer, but I felt that the journey went quicker. Walkit.com is wonderful -not all of the UK is available yet, but they are working on it.
  11. Its a couple of years since dd auditioned, but I seem to remember start time for day pupils was around 08.00 and I think there are lessons on a Saturday. I'm sure those who have auditioned recently will be better informed.
  12. Must admit I thought it was compulsory to have the regulation leotard when dd took her exam in 2010 - will check the instructions more rigorously next time!
  13. Lovely to hear how much you are enjoying the class. The turnout and plies will improve with time - wish I'd ever had 180 degrees turnout. I joined an adult ballet class in my mid 20's and loved it. I've finally found my Wii fit 2 disc - I like what's on there better so I'm just going to do that now. Bathroom scales say I've lost 1lb - it's a start - so many more to loose!! You never know, if I loose enough weight so that I can fit into a leotard I may look for a ballet class as well.
  14. I had to shorten the straps on the RAD regulation leotard for the Intermediate exam - and I wasn't the only mom doing it either. Unfortunately dd's school leotard is not Capezio. I also seem to spend a lot of time cutting threads from the bottom of the leotards - I blame dd for constantly pulling her leotard down!
  15. I can't copy the quote from Anjuli about the ribbon needing to be further forward or back to accommodate a particular foot (I tried but it went wrong hence the editing ). I had exactly same the same concerns, but I am particulary lucky in that this method seems to suit my dd's feet perfectly. For once something has gone right for me!
  16. I have struggled for years sewing ribbons on dd's shoes and when we changed to Grischko shoes I was pointed in the direction of this video. I now get the ribbons done first time and never have to re-do them. . It looks awkward but does work. I also use on demi-pointe shoes as well. Hope this helps. Hope it's ok to appear like this - not sure if I've done this correctly. Administrators please let me know if I've done this wrong.
  17. I wish the manufacturers would all make leotards with adjustable straps - fed up of trying to shorten them. We did have a leotard that did this and it could also be worn crossover on the back as well.
  18. Thanks Lottie, I wanted to get a bit fitter before I tried the classes. I also used to do Pilates, but what I really loved was BodyBalance - Tai Chi, yoga and pilates set to music - I'm looking for a class but again, I would like to get a bit fitter first. The lying down gives me a problem as I can't get up again!!
  19. Legat ofer a wide range of 'A' levels including maths. My dd found Biology a bit tough, but has continued with History and Dance A levels.
  20. I think you are so amazing in what you are doing. Good Luck with the Charity run, I definitely want to know how that goes and I hope your mom continues to hold her own. I am now the heaviest I have ever been - more so than when I was pregnant and so unfit. I had been meaning to start exercising again and you nudged me into starting it so thank you very much. Hope you stop aching soon. I only did a bit of balance and boxing on the Wii but I expect I'll be a bit stiff tomorrow!!
  21. Well the Zumba on the Wii was pretty embarassing - shocked at how difficult I found it to pick up the moves. I'm afraid I resorted to the Wii fit for an hour - and that was pretty bad as I haven't been on that for 6 months. So Fiz well done to you for joining up and putting yourself out there. Looking forward to hearing about the next class.
  22. Well done Fiz - i still haven't got the Wii out - but I will do.
  23. Go for it. You are far braver than me - I'm contemplating doing a bit of Zumba but that will be in the privacy of my lounge, with the blinds down using the Wii so that nobody can see me.
  24. The course at Legat is not a degree course. Sorry if I've confused things.
  25. Sorry, for some reason I'd pm'd my reply! It's been wonderful the progress and achievements that Ms Holland has made in such a very short time.
