  1. Hello, I haven't posted here for a while but was hoping for some advice. My 16 year old dd has recently broken her ankle. She's been in a boot and walking with crutches for the past 4 weeks, they've said around 6 weeks for it to mend. She doesn't dance as much as her sisters but was hoping to start a modern class just before the injury. At her check up today, the doctor said it could take up to 3 months to heal completely and sometimes even longer. She's going to start physio in a few weeks to help with the movement. She's keen to get back to dance as soon as possible but I imagine it's risky going back too soon? Has anyone experienced this type of injury and is there anything she can do to help the healing process? Thank you.
  2. Can anyone recommend a bra that doesn't show under a leotard? My 12 year old dd is very self-conscious and needs a bra to wear under her black leotard. The leotard has quite thick straps but her bra straps show at the back and also the leotard is quite low cut meaning a bit of the bra cup shows at the front. Any recommendations please?
  3. My youngest dd wanted to stop ballet when she was about 8. She was at a very classical school which only offered ballet and I couldn't see any reason to encourage her to keep it up if she didn't want to. About a year later she asked to start at another dance school which offered a much wider variety of classes. She started with ballet and tap and every term asked to add another class. Nearly 3 years later she is still there and loving it. She quite likes ballet but much prefers tap, modern, jazz and street. This school does a big show every year which she loves. I would really be guided by your child what they want to do or not do.
  4. Does anyone know of any online dance shops that offer free returns/exchanges? I need to buy my dd some tap shoes and not sure of the size.
  5. Thank you very much, very helpful advice. I have arranged for dd to see the dance physio recommended to me, she is going tonight. But now I am wondering if I should have taken her for an x-ray first? Or should I discuss this with the physio?
  6. Thanks, I am in NW London/Middlesex/Herts so if anyone can recommend someone in that area that would be great.
  7. Thank you, how do I find a good one?
  8. At the end of term, dd tripped on the stairs at school and injured her ankle. It was strapped up well and she was on crutches for a few days. The pain reduced but it was still very bruised and swollen. Now she's home for Easter and I want to make sure it's healed properly before she starts dancing again next term. The school nurse thought it was probably sprained but could have been a torn ligament. It does seem improved but there is still some swelling/bruising. I did think about taking her to my excellent osteopath to get it checked but would a sports physio be better? Any advice please?
  9. Well done to everyone who got a place at Wimbledon. We were thinking of doing it but couldn't face the journey in this weather. Plus the rehearsals seem to take over the whole summer, how do you fit in a summer holiday? Swan Lake is a lovely ballet, I'm sure all the children will have a wonderful time.
  10. Thanks, have ordered from Just Ballet
  11. Can anyone recommend a good online dance supplier that offers next day delivery at not too extortionate a cost?! I only need a few things for dd - foot thongs and various types of tights but I need them quickly and there isn't anywhere nearby to where I live. Many thanks.
  12. Thank you, this is all really helpful info. I will discuss further with dd.
  13. Well done to everyone, your dds will have a great time! My dd has done EYB quite a few times before and loved each one. She hasn't done Coppelia though and this venue is actually closest to where we live. But she is away at school now so can't attend the rehearsals sadly We might come and watch it though.
  14. Not sure if this is the right place to ask so apologies if it isn't. My dd is interested in 'behind the scenes' jobs in dance. How can she find out more about opportunities available? I know the Royal Opera House does apprenticeship schemes, does anyone have any experience of these? She is currently Year 12 and would like to start working at 18 rather than go down the university route. She's got a strong dance background plus she's good at English and is quite creative. I've suggested maybe a marketing job for a dance company. Any advice please? Many thanks.
  15. Thank you for posting the dates confuddled. So that's pretty much the whole summer holidays I'd also like to know where the rehearsal venue is, the theatre is fine as it's close to the station and there is a direct train from where we live. My oldest dd, who is an experienced EYBer, is desparate to do a production with her little sister. She says she would only do it if little dd got in as well. Oldest dd is away at school so can't attend the audition but Miss Lewis says she will accept a DVD of dd dancing to assess her. That's going to be a pain in itself, I have no idea how to get film onto DVD.
  16. poodle - do you know when the rehearsals are for Wimbledon?
  17. Some lovely ideas here. I'm still struggling to find a few bits for my 16 year old dd who has everything! Over the years she's had warm up boots (loves them!), dancers journal, various books etc. Does anyone have any ideas for something a bit unusual? Her main pressie is a new phone so I only need a few smaller things.
  18. Well, we've done the drop off! Dd has her own room, small but cosy and plenty of storage. I helped her unpack and then parents were invited to stay for lunch. Afterwards dd wasn't keen on us going but I thought it would be worse if we hung around. Lots of new Year 12 girls who are also boarding for the first time. I'm sure they'll make friends with each other soon but today was a bit strange for dd. She phoned this evening, other than supper and a meeting for boarders, today was generally a free day so dh and I encouraged her to go to the common room to find people to chat to. She's tired after an early start so will probably shower soon and have an early night. Induction day tomorrow and first proper day on Tuesday. It already feels so strange at home without her. I just want her to settle in quickly so I can relax a bit!
  19. Thank you sarahw and Harwel for your support, much appreciated!
  20. Thank you, I am a newbie at this, I never imagined dd would be going off to school but it's happening. I have so many worries for dd, will she be homesick, will she cope with the huge workload of A Levels plus dance etc. I am also worrying about my 2 other dds at home and how much they will miss her. Feel emotional today
  21. Getting a bit nervous now! We are driving dd up tomorrow morning. Any tips for helping her with the initial few weeks and what to do if she's homesick?? This is all so new to me.
  22. Thanks all. In the end I went to Snappy Snaps and had a photo collage made up and got a nice frame for it. I did see the cushions too, might do that next time! Also bought dd a fluffy throw for her bed and a cuddly unicorn!
  23. I've been looking for a multi photo frame but they're all so big! Any suggestions for a nice frame that holds quite a few photos but isn't huge?
  24. Dd needs a new pair of pointe shoes. She currently has Gaynor Mindens which she's been happy with but wants to try something new. Last time we went to Just Ballet in Southend which was fantastic and she had a very thorough fitting. Unfortunately they are no longer there and we can't get to their other branch. We can get into Central London easily so I assume somewhere like Dancia is best? What brands do they stock? Or any other recommendations for shops in London/Herts/Middlesex?
