  1. Monday evening's Nutcracker - Emma Maguire one of the best Claras I've seen, possibly the best. But does Ryoichi Hirano agree, or would he prefer a gentler one? He was Mouse King and the thwack she gave him with her shoe echoed around the House! Yuhui Choe a delightful and fast spinning Rose Fairy. Marianela a wonderful Sugar Plum Fairy who had to swap her Prince during the Grand Pas. Hope Thiago's OK, and well done Rose Fairy escort Dawid Trzensimiech for stepping in, and the rest of the cast for the cleverly done rearrangement of the finale. Not a beat of music lost. And a deep curtsey from Marianela to Dawid at the curtain call.
  2. I thought the ballet of the nuns was a tabloid style, pathetic travesty and went on far too long. I couldn't even just enjoy the music by shutting my eyes, as the loud huffing and puffing interfered with it. I think the Royal Opera needs to review its approach to ballet/dance in opera. I've no objection to it moving with the times - don't have to stick with the Taglioni style - but it's the kind of moving that needs consideration.
  3. Re "those old warhorses" like Swan Lake etc - Some of us may have seen them many times, but there's always a younger generation, and sometimes not so young, who have not yet seen them, (nor attended for instance a live performance of a Beethoven symphony). And there are young dancers wanting to dance them and we want to see them do it. We need a good mixture.
  4. Well, as long as the dancers know what they're doing, which they do.....! I think some of us got confused.
  5. Benjamin is the other role. Helen Crawford replaced Lauren at the dress rehearsal, and very nicely too.
  6. Saturday matinee 10 November - a beautiful performance from Marianela Nunez and Federico Bonelli, well deserved its cheering and stamping applause. And there was also the added bonus of two of the most graceful pairs of arms in the Royal Ballet - Claire Calvert in the Pas de Trois and Leanne Cope (partnered by husband Paul Kay) in the waltz.
  7. Re Metamorphosis Linbury layout as I understand it, rows A-D are far side of the special central stage with numbering mirror image of main arena ie seat 1 row A opposite seat 18 Row E. Rows E,F etc as usual.
  8. Osipova is also guesting in Swan Lake, taking over the originally scheduled Rojo performances with Acosta.
  9. Tickets have been on sale - at gala prices which includes a gift aidable donation in aid of ROH Foundation. May be a few left Need to ring Helena Price on 020 7212 9469, or email her helena.price@roh.org.uk Mixed opera and ballet, ballet has premieres by Wheeldon, Marriott, McGregor.
  10. A shrubby mallow, white tinged with pink? Sounds like Lavatera
  11. But how will Cpthreeperova cope if s/he doesn't have Ed Watson's movement to follow? Who else could act as the prime mover?
  12. Started new topic to give relevant subject as don't know how change other one. Those with Orange as their ISP could have trouble accessing the ROH website. I've spoken to and exchanged emails with ROH tech who confirmed this. They hope Orange will take the appropriate steps to correct this. You can email online.booking@roh.org.uk, who'll pass the email to appropriate tech if you're having problems. Something to do with Orange DNS servers. Margaret
  13. And those of us enjoying Les Noces should, perhaps, extend heartfelt thanks to the Royal Opera chorus. This weekend alone they had the Les Noces general rehearsal and first night on Saturday, then Sunday matinee of Les Troyens, all 5 1/2 hours of it. And every day this coming week, except Monday, they have either Les Noces or Les Troyens.
  14. There's a problem with Orange, began a few days ago. They (Orange and ROH) are working on it, and hope to have it corrected by Monday
  15. Thanks John. I managed to talk to a real (!) tech person at the ROH yesterday. It appears the problem is Orange. They are working on it and hope to have it working ok by Monday ie 2nd July. I'll post a separate topic with the appropriate subject line Margaret
  16. I had been having no problems with accessing the new ROH website. However, the last few days I've been unable to get it at all, whatever part I try. I use Google Chrome web browser and haven't had problems such as this before. I've cleared my cache, no difference. Cleared my browsing history, no difference. Has anyone else experienced this and solved it? Margaret Edit - just tried various links from the Friends newsletter, they didn't work either. Can someone give me the ROH tech email address?
  17. I think my omelette tomorrow might have some young spinach from my garden in it - grown in a trough (the spinach, not the omelette) which has copper tape round it and is standing on sharp stones. That worked last year as protection from those dastardly slugs and snails, and seems to have carried on to work this year as well.
  18. I saw Fonteyn and Nureyev in the first 'public' performance of M&A (ie after the gala), and was spellbound. Guillem left me cold, but Tamara brought back the magic, with both her partners.
  19. That's something I've been looking for as well. It doesn't seem to be designed to cater for that sort of use. Good for someone who wants to see a specific production, listing dates and casts, good for someone who wants to attend on a particular day with that clicking on a specific date, but, so far anyway, not that overview.
  20. And in the Marquez / McRea cast, James Hay (the "little prince" in the estimation of some of us) excelled as the flute boy.
  21. Re ballet on BBC TV, I tried suggesting once since "there are scheduling problems (hmmm?)", couldn't we at least have as much ballet a month as there is football a week. I reluctantly grant football more air time as there are (probably?) more viewers interested in football than ballet, although I think the current allotted ratio is not right. Yes, I know 'Strictly....' is dancing airtime, but that is not ballet. Can you imagine the comments that would fly if some amateur 5-a-side was shown instead of some premier league match or international and the viewers told "but it's football"!
  22. I saw Kumakawa with Deborah Bull. Now, that was something to see
