  1. I like Bloch tights. I find them more comfortable than Silky
  2. I was hoping there would be a simple, definitive answer to this one but the more I try to look into it, the more unclear it becomes! Do the RAD have any guidelines for character? I have the grade syllabus book and the foundations of classical technique book, but neither seem to break down the step. I just want to know how to gain the best marks I can in the exam.
  3. In my classes the tights are always under the leotards. I haven’t seen them worn on top. 🤷🏻‍♀️
  4. Hi, I’m looking for some help on the correct way to perform the polish mazurka step (as in RAD grade 5 character dance D). Is it more ‘hop, step, shunt’ or ‘swish, hop, hop’ 😂 hope this makes some sort of sense!
  5. This has really truly struck a nerve with me. And I’m an adult student - I don’t know if that makes it worse or better. Luckily I’m now somewhere I feel much happier. The one thing I would want to pass on to anyone in this situation is that there are always other options - don’t let anyone make you believe otherwise. That’s something I wish I had realised sooner
  6. I’ve ordered a new navy leotard that looks like the neck line is quite high so fingers crossed that works out. There’s not a lot I can do in 7 weeks about my weight or the size of my stomach and thighs sadly. But at least hopefully I can remove the worry of my chest falling out 🤭 I’m definitely going to take a road trip to Sheila’s shop though, it sounds wonderful. Maybe over the summer.
  7. I’ve been going to grade 5 for over a year and a half, most recently for 2 and a half hours per week. I know the majority of the syllabus inside out, back to front, in my sleep, standing on my head..... if only that was enough lol. I’m going to do my very best. But I’m scared it won’t be enough. I’ll be so sad if all the effort turns out not to be good enough.
  8. It was mainly my technique in my dances that let me down last time. My performance and music are good - i got three 8s and a 7 last time for them between the main section and the dances.
  9. Thanks everyone. I’ve checked with my teacher and I’m allowed a different leotard as long as it’s in navy. That’s a good idea about the nude/invisible strap bras. I’m definitely going to look into that!
  10. I have my grade 5 next month and achieving distinction in this one means more to me than anything in the world. I’m 30 years old, having started ballet for the first time ever at 26. I’m decent en pointe, and got a very strong merit (69) at grade 4 after just over 2 years. But I’m a perfectionist and I have my heart absolutely set on Distinction this time. It’s silly, but it’s how I feel. 75 will mean the world to me ❤️
  11. Hello, i wonder if anyone has any recommendations for leotards more flattering for larger dancers? I’m an overweight student with an exam soon. I’m just looking for something to cover me up a bit more than the RAD Faith leotard that is the standard for my school - it just sits too low for my personal preference. Thank you xx
  12. @drdance thank you so much! Very helpful
  13. The reason I want to improve my quads - it seems they’re called - is because my legs can easily go above 90 degrees either physically held by a classmate or using a table etc. but I can’t just hold them there myself. This seems to be a muscle weakness rather than a flexibility issue.
  14. Hello, Just wondering if any of you use the gym to help strengthen muscles, and if you could offer some suggestions on exercises for the muscles at the front of the thigh? My calves are very very strong, and they seem to take the brunt of everything (I believe this may be a sign of bad posture in every day life?), but I’ve come to realise that my upper legs may be letting me down a bit. Ive also been told that I have loose hips and good capacity for turnout but not the strength to hold it (yet!). I don’t know what type of exercise would help with that either? Thanks.
  15. Thank you for posting this, I just watched the whole thing! Feeling inspired
  16. Hello, and welcome! It sounds like you’re really keen to try out ballet class and that’s brilliant. Any good teacher will be understanding of your concerns about uniform, and any serious ballet student will be there only to learn and progress and will have no reason to judge anyone else in class. Could I ask, just out of curiosity, why the traditional ballet uniform is considered to be inappropriate? I’m not a ‘usual’ ballet student either - I started as an adult and I’m also overweight. But I haven’t let that stop me and I’m making good progress so far. I love it so I have persevered and made it work. I hope you enjoy your classes when you start 😊
  17. Wishing you lots of luck @The_Red_Shoes, fingers crossed for you! That is such a good idea! I think I’ll copy that one. My aim in my first exam (grade 4) was to get 6 in every section. And while I got that or higher in 9 of the sections, I got a 5 for one of them. I was gutted as it was in my favourite part of the exam and I actually came out of it saying to my teacher how well that particular section went. I have no idea what happened.
  18. I tried spotting lower today in my pose turns and it actually helped quite a lot. I felt more stable and in control 👍🏻
  19. On a hand dryer: caution, do not use near water... sort of defeats the purpose
  20. Heated front windscreen on car - no more scraping ice in the morning! Just Eat for ordering takeaway Paying for parking via an app - no more needing to find change.
  21. Does anyone have any exams coming up this term or next? I won’t have my next one for a while I don’t think but I’m very excited about the prospect. I didn’t do my best in the last one, I was too nervous. I think (hope) I’ll be calmer next time now that I know what to expect.
  22. I wonder how many people have started sitting these exams. It would be interesting to see how the results compare to the graded and vocational ones. Also I wonder if it would be possible to take the same variation unit twice in one term - on flat and on pointe. That way you could get a good comparison and indication of your pointe technique.
  23. That’s really helpful @Viv thank you very much. I’m (not so) secretly hoping for a distinction in grade 5 as I wasn’t too far away from it in my grade 4. My performance and music marks were higher than my technique marks so I’m trying hard to learn all the little technical details. It must be brilliant to have an actual examiner as a teacher! Thanks again.
  24. I would say definitely both - while not essential to be accepted on a teaching course, extra training and extra syllabus knowledge can only be a good thing for the future career. Perhaps not a common opinion, but I feel anyone who is serious about ballet would benefit from following both the graded and vocational routes. Each offer certain elements that can’t be found in the other.
  25. Oh I haven’t heard of spotting low before. I never would have thought to try that. Maybe worth a try.
