  1. I’ve just found out that I got a High Merit! I genuinely can’t believe it. Crying my eyes out. I’m so so happy.
  2. It was in person. Allegro 2 is the bane of my life in every grade! I’m not much into jumping at the moment! but I must say I prefer grand allegro to petit allegro since I can at least travel to compensate for my lack of elevation!
  3. I sat RAD Intermediate Foundation a few weeks ago. I’m so happy I did it, but it was much more difficult than the grades. Probably because I like to put too much pressure on myself haha. I secretly hope I’ve achieved a Merit, but my official line is that even a Pass will be an achievement for me 🤞🏻
  4. There seems to be very little news in general on exam results for the Spring 2024 session compared to last year for example. I’ve just sat my first vocational exam and I seem to switch between being terrified I’ve failed to being confident I’ve managed to scrape a merit about 5 times a day haha 🤣
  5. Is anyone doing an exam this term? Or have plans to do one in the near future? I’m going for Intermediate-Foundation next month.
  6. Hello, I wonder if anyone has experience of these as an alternative (or additional) to the graded exams/class awards? Is the standard expected generally equivalent to the full exam at each level? Thank you
  7. @BalletEnthusiast there is absolutely no rush or urgency to be doing grade 5, or any other grade for that matter. All that’s important is that you’re enjoying your journey of dance - nothing else xx
  8. I don’t have trouble getting fully over on pointe, it’s just that my ankles (more noticeably my right one) are not stable enough so I fear just going too far over and injuring myself. I’ve also noticed a bad habit developing of doing literal push ups on the barre so that it almost looks like I’m doing a single leg releve, but in reality all the effort has come from my arms and shoulders propping myself up on the barre out of fear.
  9. I’m resitting grade 5, I was 3 marks away from a distinction last time and it’s my favourite grade, so I’m hoping to cobble together those 3 extra marks this time 🤞🏻 @Angela Essex Giselle is one of the three exams at level 2 of Discovering Repertoire. I personally find it very difficult, but will give it a go @NeverTooOld I also started ballet for the first time as an adult, and although I was so keen and hard working and excited to get my pointe shoes, there is a definite fear in the back of my mind regarding (one leg) pointe in the centre. I will happily pose onto pointe on one foot, but my brain will not allow me to releve onto pointe in retire 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️
  10. Congratulations @Angela Essex, I’m so happy for you! Will you go on to do Intermediate now? What exams are we all planning for this term? I’m resitting a previous one that I wasn’t happy with my result for at the time, and potentially attempting the Giselle unit too. But I find that one particularly difficult and allegro in general is not my strong point, so we’ll see how it goes!
  11. I’ve had result enquiry reports from exams marked on iPad
  12. I had a recent experience where I scored a decent high merit for a level 2 exam, and on the same day scored a full 10 marks lower for a level 3 exam. Other candidates that day got distinction for the same level 3 exam, but also a similar high merit for an equivalent level 2 unit 🤷🏻‍♀️ I personally find the result enquiry service very helpful. Ive used it a few times, and I probably will continue to do so whether I’m pleased with my results or not. I find the extra breakdown and explanation of marks to be really valuable. If we’ve put this much time and effort in already, surely an in depth analysis of the result is worth getting rather than just sweeping it under the rug and moving on as it were?
  13. I have recently been pretty put out by my latest result. I did feel a little angry/sad/frustrated at first. But at the end of the day, I’m doing this because I love it. So I need to just pick myself back up and try even harder next time. (For context, I’m an adult student working through the exams who had relative success at first but now dropping down the marks and result bands)
  14. It sounds like you’re doing exactly the right things @Angela Essex and I wish you all the very best with your Intermediate-Foundation exam. I haven’t done any of the vocationals yet but maybe in winter 🤞🏻 As for advice about sweating… I also need that! Even in winter I would sweat a lot so summer is rather unpleasant!
  15. Is anyone doing any exams this session? I don’t think I’ll be doing any more until the winter session, unless I decide to record some video exams over summer (teacher approval dependent). I’m also still waiting on my result enquiry report from my last exam so I should probably wait to read the comments on that before tackling another one haha.
  16. I have such mixed feelings about all of this. I too have been disappointed with my results, but I absolutely would not want to be assessed any differently to the young teenagers. I don’t want special consideration because I’m older or heavier or less experienced. I want the same sense of achievement if(/when!) I achieve the same standard expected of the youngsters. I think being examined alongside the 12 year olds is actually really helpful - surely it just pushes us adults to work hard enough to strive for the same standards expected of them.
  17. I’m so sorry to hear this @Workhard_Dreambig, sending lots of hugs. I know it’s disappointing but please don’t let it put you off. It’s perfectly normal to be upset or angry or frustrated or whatever you feel for a while, but then just pick yourself back up and try again (whether that’s advanced 1 or another grade or a performance project). You must really love ballet to have put in all the effort to get to this stage - you absolutely can achieve that extra mark. I find the result enquiry reports really helpful. I like reading the comments and it gives an indication of the further breakdown of marks eg posture, line, dynamics etc.
  18. @balletmum20 That’s incredible - massive congratulations
  19. I’ve received my grade 7 results - I got a merit!
  20. I’ve had no problems at all training in syllabus classes with teenagers. It’s a bit daunting walking in there the first time to a new class / at a new school, but as soon as they see how passionate you are about learning the syllabus just like they are, they just accept you as another member of the class. Or that’s what I’ve found in my experience so far anyway. I find teenagers these days are much more accepting and tolerant than they were when I was one myself. For me, the important thing is ballet and working towards exams. I’ll do whatever it takes to continue with that, even if there are some challenges along the way. As for the parents of the children I go to classes with, I’ve had many of them praise me for my “bravery” and “dedication”. I think more would love to give it a go too, but perhaps lack the confidence to do so.
  21. Excellent @Workhard_Dreambig, do let us know how you got on when your results arrive 🤞🏻
  22. You should definitely do that if it’s something you want @balletfanatic, I think it’s a great idea!
  23. @cavycapers I’m not in my 60s but always love to chat about ballet grades and exams. Which one(s) are you working on?
  24. @Harriet It’s optional now to either use a pianist or the recorded music. Maybe check with your teacher just to be sure in case they still choose to hire a pianist for the exam day. Lots of luck, hope it goes well.
