I would strongly are against that under Makhar Vaziev, the opportunities for dancers at all levels to improve themselves and 'step up' is unlike any company in the world. Mr Vaziev in countless interviews tells how he has an open door policy for dancers to ask for roles or opportunities, he then tells them what they must work on to be able to be considered for the role. He then admits he is very demanding in the studio... if the dancers tell him they want a bigger role, they must work and walk through that door. It may not be for everyone, but if you have worked your life and have a contract at the Bolshoi, comfortable seats shouldn't be what you are looking for asa dancer. Just this week Xander told about how he was told to wait for longer for his chance with a wooly answer (guardian), and in the end threw in his spear, and demonstrated his talent elsewhere.

Thank you John, very interesting! I find the tone of Osipova's words to be more critical of other theatres as well as happy for Perm. It is reminiscent of Mr Polunin, and kinda takes the gloss of the announcement and happiness I have for her and Perm.

Then there wouldn't be much need for a forum to thrash-out their thoughts. Members have either personal or close knowledge of the people involved or maybe no idea and just pure speculation. The rules of the forum really prevent people naming their sources or their knowledge without losing a large dollop of discretion afforded to them from the people directly involved. So the 'may or may not know', keep the forum posts building up which I am guessing is the interest for the forum membership, and those that 'know', will recognize who else knows from the content and implications of posts. Otherwise we should just accept press releases, even with serious omissions, and it a bit of spin on the 'real' story.

It seems Madeline took the time to thank the dancers and all of the people involved in the support of dancers, hair etc.,but left out management totally. for a dancer to be so obvious whilst she still has an active career is extremely brave, and to mention extremely tough times. Dancers leave a company USUALLY because of; they are not chosen for the roles they would/should be dancing, a repertoire they do not like or does not suit them, they are not in the plans of the AD or do not see promotion happening, they are not given the freedom to go to Galas etc., or personal reasons. These usual reasons explain the small turnover within companies, as not everyone can get exactly as they like in a changing environment. the analysis and comments above indicate that promoted and talented dancers are leaving and not all to be thrown in the same pot for the reasons, although what is clear, is that it is not a happy working environment, it may get things done, it may please the audiences, and the directors, but clearly it is at a cost of the dancers' happiness whether it be pay, too many hours, last minute changes to schedules etc.. Many well paid CEOs in business get well rewarded during layoffs and for getting 'the most' out of their workers. Also reading about the BBC pay packages, it was said that so many nice people expected to be treated fairly in pay and were totally in shock when they found out their egotistical and pushy colleagues were getting so much more. I think TR qualifies in both counts to explain her pay and successful record of performances. It seems that the cost of this borne by the dancers, ballet masters, etc., and has had an extreme effect on their feelings towards the environment. Good results at any cost should not be a mantra, and is why modern companies make sure their CEOs are judged on soft targets too, such as the engagement of their employees. I think KOH has done an amazing job at RB and you feel the appreciateion and respect for his dancers. Also looking at the numbers, TR should not be getting more because she is dancing, especially when considering the average wage of the principal dancers, if anything she should be getting less because of it, otherwise how can you tell a fellow principal dancer that their pay is fair with a straight face when you earn 4 times more than them?

No. It. Isn't. I think it is quite clear that the powers that be have stated that the dancers and stages were not ready in time. It has its scheduled return date which has been said will run with out any changes to the original choreography. What concerns me the most, are the people who read a deliberately untrue or misleading sensationalist story, then take a huge offence to an absolute non story and cry homophobia and censorship.... Or racism, terrorism, or whatever distracts from the real issues that are happening to you everyday in real life.

This is a different matter entirely, and I think it is not productive to discuss these at all. This thread is about the Nureyev ballet production at the Bolshoi. Again, I ask what would the government say about staging the same ballet at the Royal Opera House with a gay Icon and full frontal naked imagery and dance. It is clearly controversial in Russia as it would be in the UK. I have explained that my view was about the description of old soviet Russia etc etc, and that they were unfair. I accept that the views of general people in the UK are very open for LGBT rights. Any discussion of what is happening in Russia is left to another group to argue, I am not Russian nor have ties, I just made my posts for a balance in the discussion as the BBC would say.

I posted my response referencing Turing and Wilde due to these popular comments by likes, and the general sentiment that Russia is so backward when it comes to LGBT rights referencing the 1930's, and Russia's historical issues being not so different to the UK or other countries. So before people talk about the 'dark old soviet days' the UK has its own. I don't know of an example of such nudity with a homosexual content being performed on a stage that is majority government funded such as ROH, so mentioned what I tried as the theoretical alternative....a full length ballet about Wayne Sleep showing him fully naked in photos and what is reportedly naked dancing with homosexual 'under/overtones'. This event then would be a comparison to what is reportedly happening in Russia now. Otherwise we could talk about our own beliefs about what marriage means, adoption etc etc which aren't really helpful in this context or in this forum. I agree with Janet, the past is the past, and in all countries have developed in the last 50 years (including Russia) so references about the distant past are not helpful. This was the high horse I was referencing. I will not comment on an LGBT issue for this year, as it will not bring the conversation any further. It seems That Mr Urin has discussed the reasons of postponement and that the ballet will be shown next year, so all is OK in the world.

I think it's about time the British got off their high horses regarding homosexual content, and or acceptability. It was 2013 only that Alan Turing was pardoned for his homosexuality after much debate, his chemical castration and suicide. Although Julian Clary, Graham Norton and Michael Barrymore have removed some borders on homosexuality in the UK sportspeople are still chanted about their sexuality, and their are very few openly gay sportsmen or politicians still. Russia is a conservative country where heterosexual sex scenes are still cut from hollywood films, and nakedness even in a heterosexual dance would also be banned/discouraged. I think that a ballet about Wayne Sleep showing him full naked in photographs filling the stage, and scenes of him naked dancing with lovers would also be very problematic in the UK. While also missing the point of wh he is fondly remembered. So please, a little less belief that the Russians and the old soviets homosexuals were treated so badly when one of your war heroes was treated so badly, those mention Tchaikovsky may also like to equal remember the treatment of Oscar Wilde, and so many others.

Gudanov, the dancer who illicites amazing and outrageous stories of his behaviour on and off stage from his colleagues. nureyev and polunin have nothing on some of the stories, a real legend, I hope a book is written. Also a wonderful natural talent of course

I understood, I think maybe I was misunderstood, but that happens a lot, so no problem. I was referring to the fact that I would not be too confident that it was 'a minion with no clue' rather than..'a minion who knew what they were doing and the effect it may have'

There has been a concerted effort to try to convince Royal Ballet and their public that Xander should return to the company after his wonderful success abroad. I think that this is part of that effort, and I hope that Royal Management will have a good think about whether they should invite him back, it is clear that Xander himself (from his comments in the press and social media) would very much like to.

In reading the reaction she of some members to this thread you would think ENB was a million light years away from the Royal Ballet. So many posts in this site are about Royal 'we don't need any stars, our young talent is amazing and they should be given a chance' etc etc. ENB clearly like 'star' names and invite a lot of guests for their performances, they also advertised for new soloists ( as previously stated) and now they are applying for more corps. I do not have any inside knowledge of what is happening, but can't fathom why many dancers might not be happy at ENB, when it seems internal opportunities seem to be going to outsiders. Royal have one regular outside guest, and there is a load of fuss about it.

Choice? As a dancer? Well.. no, not at all. You wait until the cast sheets come out and read what you will do, that's it. Any attitude less than productive and enthusiastic will mean removal from the role and a black mark that will mean an apology is needed if you would like a career at the company. sergei polunin starts many of his views from this reality, but given ballet and the discipline is a major part of ballet life. Some decorum ladies please, this isn't 50 shades of ballet. Also, there is a point of note that a dancer's physique or attractiveness isn't really appropriate to comment upon in general public (what you do behind closed doors is your own business). Just imagine sitting behind two old men talking about the young girl in the corps and the thoughts they have are not really to be said in a family environment, nudge, nudge, wink, wink and it takes quite a different tone. That is before you imagine that, that dancer is a relative or friend of yours. I know that its a bit of light fun etc, but I think it is an important point about what is appropriate when commenting about a ballet dancer.

Indeed, if you actually go to watch ballet you are being subsudised by all of the taxpayers who do not go, so you very much pay a very small percentage of the cost of the ticket without public funding (plus a ticket fee)
