  1. Showing my lack of international knowledge… can others please enlighten me as to Béjart choreographed pieces (should I know if these? Are they danced by UK companies?) thanks in advance
  2. Well, no such thing as a free lunch…. Offering prizes gets invites to judge, teach master classes etc at prestigious competitions. And certain AD’s of institutions seem to do quite a lot of this…whilst barely teaching or knowing their own institution’s talent!
  3. Do they only hold one round of auditions - or is there a second ‘funding’ audition for those unable to accept place offer without financial assistance in March time (like I believe Tring do) ?
  4. I think ‘the powers that be’ at BRB are reading this forum and especially the thread about what we’d like to see from the RB… bravo for ‘getting in there first’ …. In fact for just getting in there as let’s face it, RB programmers seem on a path of complete denial as far as delivering what an audience wants… IMHO
  5. And quite often it’s a good place to sit & see the ballet great & good wandering in & out of the stage door area… & even see some sitting at a table close by!!
  6. Haven’t read this thread through yet big saw the announcement about La Fille Ma Garde by BRB… well, you’ve got to hand it to Acosta!!! He’s reading the room & giving audiences what they want!!! Move over KOH…. I don’t wish BRB to lose out but honestly I think CA could be the perfect solution to the feeling of loss of identify of English Ballet. Afterall, BRB’a origins was as the touring arm of the Royal Ballet…so maybe consolidate under one umbrella under one fabulous artistic director again is what’s needed!!! IMHO anyhow!
  7. Trying to work out if I dare suggest extending a London trip (to see Manon Sat 17th yes - got tickets for Xmas!!) to go to this too….
  8. Like google translate too!! To help the 2 sides communicate to facilitate the money to match the needs of the creation!
  9. I always think of producers as being the bridge between the artistic & the commercial arms of theatre/film & I guess dance too!
  10. That reminds me- have 2 such ‘credit notes’ for shops in purse… when they are merely paper like receipts it’s so easy to forget & throw away (yep - have done that with £££ before 🥲)
  11. One question springs to my mind…. What actually constitutes graduate success these days? Is it job immediately after graduation? Is that joining a company or a cruise ship? Or is it going on to more training or university? Or a short term apprenticeship or obe if the ‘pay to dance with’ companies that seem to be springing up. Or being prepared for a ‘portfolio’ career that might be a mix of freelance dance (in between barista or similar most likely..)Or going into Escher training… I would say for choice of training institutions it is perhaps better to focus on the here & now as what is most important is they train in an environment that offers excellent training in a safe & supportive atmosphere & with transparent communications. Remember too often graduate success may be portrayed as the success of the last training place when in many cases the foundation of that training has been at prior schools (we have all witnessed places of repute who bring in international competition winners already career ready for the third grad year of upper schools) or indeed the polish that helped gain a job was actually gained by outside additional coaching…. Good luck!
  12. Arrange a parent viewing class? It might make them buck up their ideas or indeed make parents see that their offspring are wasting the opportunity they have & wasting the parents money. The parents might just jolt them to behave better (esp if they themselves have previously trained there or elsewhere with a respect for discipline) It is so sad how basic good manners have just become ‘uncool’ & how sadly the bad mannered seem to often be the stronger influence…. It’s so unfair on those or perhaps wish to put in effort to improve & enjoy their lessons…. Slight radical second idea…you could also play act like them…. Turn up scruffy, in a hoodie, mismatched shoes, chewing gum, just say you can stand at barre & do stuff or not bother…. You get the idea…. It may well shock them into seeing how unattractive their behaviour is as they see how unfair it would be if you just acted like you didn’t care…. Good luck!
  13. There was often used the phrase ‘golf widow’…. I’m accused of creating a ‘ballet widower’!!! I think he should take up golf so win win!! 😂
  14. Applause could likely add quite a bit of time to the evening out - and well worth it too I imagine!
  15. Good points Colman which I think is generally replicated in all industries…. Certainly seen more movement in things like normal schools with changes of Heads or Acting Heads now become the official headteacher. Think also people feel more able to commit to geographical moves too now so necessarily changing jobs
  16. I’d travel that & more…. It’s just the fallout of desertion of family duties & money that are the usual issues!! One day….
  17. Thank you Rob! Would love to go see this but not sure 1hr45mins including the 25min interval can justify the 3hr to get there & 3hrs back travel time/costs….
  18. Could you possibly post a photo of that flyer please…thanks
  19. Interesting timing….wonder if there’s a move to another very well know UK establishment….???
  20. Gutted I missed this opportunity to see this company in the end (family commitments win our sadly…) I hope more overseas ballet companies make it to cinemas near me again soon!
  21. I wanted to ‘like’ your post above Colman but there was no heart symbol to click for some reason….🤷🏻‍♀️
  22. We don’t insist that to be a good writer in English one must first be a good writer in Latin & German & French…. All languages at the ‘foundation’ of the English written word as we know it today (& I’m sure many many other things that are influences too from other languages/countries/ dialects/cultures & even sounds from nature/engineering etc! Embrace the history but don’t be restrained by it! Embrace ballet if it works for you but don’t feel contained by it or excluded from it! Just MHO!
  23. Ooh…. It’s on near me this Sunday!! Have sent info to ballet friends… not often seem a chance to see overseas companies in our local cinemas!
  24. I expect it’s quite likely more an HR/internal box ticking criteria that they (maybe all schools) have to show they are doing to some measure & can I’m sure in no way mark anyone out if they are selected nor if they are not. Probs just a process with nothing to do with pupil selection
  25. The only young dancers I know if who started at RBS White Lodge at year 7 had all been JA’s first. There was a thing whereby parents felt that being a JA in London was ‘better’ than a regional centre & upped their chances to get into WL but I think that was rubbish (though it did perhaps mean more likely to be able to be selected for Nutcracker at ROH if opportunities extended to JA age dancers or to perform at Summer Fair at White Lodge).
