  1. To all: I am happy when the theatre is full. Whether it's Raven or 2 Pigs - whether it's Swan or a Wheeldon triple - whatever - I want it to be full. End of.
  2. I liked Raven Girl. Shock! I liked Two Pigeons. Horror! ...but how the Ashton can go from whimsy to mimsy through patches of beauty. Someone earlier on mentioned "camp" - in Ashton's case the Mont Blanc of highness. That sort of gets me through the gypsies. Anyway, according to the Kavanagh biography the piece is part allegory based on Ashton's tolerance of his then boyfriend's exploits on Fire Island. So there's another thought to have when watching...
  3. I think a petition isn't necessary but we can all right as individuals - I'll do mine over the weekend! I should imagine 2016/17 is fixed anyway but 2017/18 and year after may still have some question marks...
  4. I haven't thought of writing to RB/AD with a wish list since Dowell's days. When I did I got an amazingly detailed letter - quite candid - including reasons why Guillem wouldn't do My Brother, My Sisters and the role of Ashton in the rep. But I think all of us should do it since e-media does make it so much easier. I'd like Sylvia back, Les Illuminations, Jazz Calendar, Daphnis in original set, I'd like Symphonic and Scènes on a permanent loop! I do think all of these are a good fit with other parts of repertoire and don't exist in some sort of Ashtonian bubble.
  5. Thought Monotones I & ll very well danced - so well rehearsed. Very impressed. Loved Two Pigeons - enjoyed it far more than I thought I would. I love Salenko and Macrae together - great onstage presence and I thought they were excellent. In fact the only thing which disappointed were the rows of empty seats in the Amphi - sides rows C/D/E/F practically empty.
  6. Sarah Lamb's Manon is great - brittle and luscious at the same time - am really pleased for her.
  7. The quickest of comments - was at last night's performance. Really enjoyed Viscera, second cast of Stock, Kish, Kaneko and corps really nailed it. This time it seemed more "homage" to rather than sub-Balanchine. Loved Cowley and Ball in Faune, thought Golding spectacular and Cuthbertson sublime in Tach Pas...and (deep breath) because I knew what to expect in Carmen, I sat back and actually enjoyed it. (OK , not all of it...) Tierney Heap was a revelation - feisty, gutsy, cheap, vulgar and danced her pointe shoes off - she somehow made it work. It was "shameless". I actually thought she'll make a great Vetsera in Mayerling. Muntagirov gave the role both vulnerability and style - almost Woyzeck and again I want to see him as Rudolf. Ball was great...and Golding had a very knowing way with his horns. Anyway, heaven knows what the RB will do with it. I can't make out if there's a good ballet trying to get out or trying to get in. If he cut it down to just the main 3 (4 including Fate) could it work as a sort of Moor's Pavane chamber piece? OK the choreograohly is derivative but some bits do work - certainly with last night's cast. The "cabaret" scenes could all go - that'd be a start as they really are Bourne pastiche. Or perhaps the who thing could work as part of a "Carlos and friends evening. Who knows?
  8. Re Salenko/Macrae: http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/theatre-dance/features/the-royal-ballets-star-duo-reveal-how-theyve-become-the-best-pairing-in-years-a6711241.html
  9. No it's not unfair to say what I did. There's a rather unsavoury "little England" tone that runs through some comments. They are free to say it. I am free to comment on it.
  10. Glad to know - am a big fan of Salenko and she's received some unfair jingoistic stick from some forum members, so hurrah!
  11. Heard him in "Private Passions" on Radio 3 Sunday (12-13). Great choice of music and such a nice person too.
  12. "This is an unusual situation. Acosta has been an important part of the Royal Ballet company for 17 years and leaves at the end of the run of Carmen. Under the circumstances a certain amount of 'self-indulgence' might be forgiven." Just want to say I agree with above statement too. Cut Carlos a bit of slack - I don't think it was self-indulgent or arrogant. It's no masterpiece but it could become a popular hit on another circuit. Anyway I prefer to remember Carlos in Requiem, Manon and many other great performances.
  13. I'll throw in my two penny's worth re Carmen. Saw second cast only but going to see Acosta "free" cast on 9th which will be interesting. Yes it's a mixed bag. Morera was great but could do with a killer solo to help define character. The best bits were better than I thought, some bits far worse. I reckon if it had been part of a "Acosta and Dancers with guests from the Royal" season at Sadlers or the Coli, people would have been more open to the Matthew Bourne type mix. It's a big ask to be part of a RB triple at ROH and expectations were too high. I'm mellowing because I was more negative immediate after showing, but you can't fault him for trying, but the work needs pruning, sharpening and the eye of a helpful dramaturg.
  14. Sorry FLOSS, but "My Brother, My Sisters" was/is no turkey. And I believe it is up for a revival. So unless you want the full wrath of Clement Crisp unleashed upon you, that particular ballet ain't frightened of Xmas...
  15. PS apologies if the next comment leans towards the "rumoured at the time", but I'd heard that Mary V was one of the roles that Guillem chose to decline along with the "seductive" sister in My Brother, My Sister, and the lead in Gloria.
  16. I'm teeth-gnashing as I write as I realise I over-relied on my seasonal injections of Osipova (going through serious cold-turkey!) and I woefully underbooked Hayward and Naghdi in R&J. More fool me. I missed Francesca's debuts in both Manon and Rhapsody (will catch up on the latter next year) but your comments confirm what I've always thought, that most dancers are either a Manon or Juliet. A few can do both to exactly or almost the same level of involvement/triumph - Guillem for example - but most lean one way or 'tother. Mary Vetsera is sort of the third card in the MacMillan deck but....sometimes key dancers give it a miss - Guillem for example.
  17. A v v v good point - no plot summary on the free sheet/cast list. I find that quite divisive and unfair. Strangely they give plot summary for R&J which most people know. Re pricing - I paid £9 for each row M seat in Amphitheater - not a fortune!
