  1. OMG that is disgusting. Some people will do anything to get a bargain. Like in work we have a 50% of sale and people still ask for more discount. It drives me mad. Clearly she wasn't that interested in it. Tutu's are very expensive and it wasn't until I did my Bsc HONS course in Fashion Management did I really ust why people charge things the way they do. They have to take into account the fabric, the cost of the fabric, the cost of things used for the fabric liek sewing machine, how much electric was used, did you eat, did you have to drive, did you have to use heating etc etc and people do not realise that especially with garments with so much detail. That is a lot of time and effort. Should have told her to go ahead and try and make her own for £60 she'd have no luck.
  2. If this is in the wrong place, I apologize in advance and if the mods could change it that would be fab and if this has already been posted then feel free to delete it Anyway, it's not dance related or anything I'm just curious on what people's views are of the types of pointe shoes that are out there, what is going on with Gamba and Reppetto pointes, why the bottom of my shoes (the bottom of the insole) are the first to come away and just why in the heck my fitter thinks Freeds are just not suitable for my feet whatsoever. She said I have no chance in hell of getting the heel of Freed's to stay on my feet. I've been hearing a lot of things about Gamba and Repetto pointe shoes being discontinued, I remember when I was getting re-fitted while I was in Edinburgh that I was put in Gamba's, especially after telling them I can't wear Bloch's because they do not follow the shape of my foot, and it was awful. I'm staring at him like, why? Repetto was the same and it just makes me wonder like, why are some pointe shoes like when most of the time they are all made the same. Thoughts anyone?
  3. Oh if I had the money I would buy it, I do a lot of cosplaying you see and I cosplay an anime called Princess Tutu (naturally its ballet related, a spin off about swan lake) and the costume I have that I made doesn't fit me anymore. I've already took it in as much as I can and now it's starting to fall apart. http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2010/225/9/b/Princess_tutu_by_MayaTakamera.jpg that's it when I first made it.
  4. I have the same problem, I'm very broad across the top of my foot (I'm a 5X in Grishko but take a M width in GM) but my toes and heel are very narrow. Getting shoes to fit me is a nightmare, it's why I prefer GM cause they do the sleek fit but I'm starting to lean more towards Grishko again. I'm using their demi pointes for class instead of normal slippers and it's far more comfortable on my feet as the normal slipper, no matter how wide it is cuts into my foot whereas on a demi point of pointe shoe for that matter my feet are encased and not spreading out thus evening me out a bit more.
  5. I do find, depending on my mood and where abouts my cycle is (although it is all over the place at the minute as I've been put into an early menopause) does effect my balance, suppose that could play a part. You do have a point, in class I feel like I need to do good because I don't want to look like a fool. At the barre it's natural to me and I just go with the music but my center work is a weak point. If I make one mistake I find it hard to recover and in class the others look to someone who knows what they're doing and if they're following me and I mess up then they will too.... My self confidence has been quite low but it's getting better, slowly but surely.
  6. yeah it is one of the smallest corps, I think it barely has even 60 dancers. For a ballet such as swan lake the Royal ballet tops it every time for me. As I said I've seen Tatianna dance a few times and she is amazing and there was another lower level dancer that stuck out for me as well but I can't remember her name either. http://www.russballet.ru/lang1/company.html dunno if that will be of any use to anyone.
  7. Are you sure her toe nail is clipped right down, I have this problem and have to clip my big toe nail literally as far down as I can. Gaynor Minden do a nice totally toe kit that helps sometimes but a majority of the time I just tape my toe and that helps.
  8. So you's are probably sick of hearing from me Anyway, at home my balance is great and I have vinyl flooring in the kitchen where I practice but in class where they have a Harlequin sprung floor my balance is awful. At home I can hold an arabesque for a good few minutes but in class just past there I could barely hold myself up right. I'm not sure if it's because I'm not used to the flooring or what, I'm certainly pulled up but I don't know what I'm doing wrong or what I can do to improve. Any suggestions?
  9. So the RSB is coming to Belfast and Mommy got me and her tickets to go see them in January, seeing La Fille mal Gardee. I see there Giselle and it was pretty good, they are a small company so it wasn't going to be mind blowing but their Swan Lake is one of the best I've seen. It blew me away. Tatianna (Bolotova??) was an amazing Giselle. Anyway, does anyone know how I can find out who is dancing in La Fille? As I would simply love to meet the company. The Grand Opera house have told me to send in a request through them and they'll see what they can do but does anyone else have any other ideas or suggestions.
  10. Welcome From what I gathered I would assume it would really go by your audition and which level you are at physically. For example you may have done your grade 5 but to an examiner you maybe higher in their view of technique. I would advise you to apply for as many as you can and give 110% at each audition as that is what they will really want to see. It's not something I am familiar with but I would assume it would go on your actual technique in the audition than anything else.
  11. http://www.movedancewear.com/ https://dancewear.co.uk/ http://www.justballet.co.uk/ http://www.dancedirect.com/uk/ http://www.dancemania.biz/ They are the ones I use, all international as well However if I can't get anything from there then there is an ebay seller who is simply spectacular and can specifically order things in for you. http://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/jolindance2012 she is amazing, I get my skirted leo's from her and those pull on wrap skirts. Excellent quality and fabulous service. Hope this helps.
  12. Anjuli is right, if there is significant pain then go to the doctors as it could be inflamation. My hips click when I am not warmed up properly, I find a good few plies in 1st and 2nd with strong turnout help get rid of the clicking.
  13. It just goes to show how ill informed people are, it makes me laugh when those who claim to know everything about Ballet believe Gymnastics and Ballet are the same when they're not. Like my back is very flexible but for the life of my I cannot do that Gymnastics move called the Scorpion, I cannot do cartwheels or back flips. Yet my two Gym friends can do that as easy as I can grab my foot by my ankle and lift it up to my shoulder. It just goes to show.
  14. The only time I will ever like when a dancer exaggerates her lines is in Swan Lake, I feel that is what Odette should be, or that is what I have perceived anyway. But in anything else I do not think it is necessary especially in Ballet's like Romeo and Juliet, Giselle and Coppelia. When I see a dancer playing Aurora that requires insatiable amounts of strong pointe work, I do not want to see crazy flexibility. It ruins it for me. I watched one version of Giselle once and you know the Act where the Corps hops along the stage in Arabesque, well their working leg was held higher than the 90 degree that I feel is perfect for that part and it ruined it for me and that was the part that made me fall in love with Ballet.
  15. I agree, I have always been amazed by Gymnastics and people always believe that they can do what Ballet dancers do but I have two Gymanstic friends who although are very supple cannot do pointe work because they lack the strength required. Both industry's are competitive and both Russian and the Chinese battle for the most flexible dancers but they forget Ballet and Gymnastics are two different areas and although may seem it, they are far from the same. Both have such amazing beauty but they are becoming far too alike. There is a girl on youtube I follow who is a gymnast but she does ballet as well and in one of her videos she explained that you need a different type of core strength, you need to be supple and limber for Gymnastics but elegant and strong for Ballet and I fully believe people are forgetting the difference between the two.
  16. I find nowadays people are loosing sight of what is naturally beautiful. It's why I'm not really a big fan of Russian style's, they try too hard and sacrifice their lines for height etc etc and most of the time it just looks horrible. Like take the high attitude for example, I just find that too much. As lovely as it is, it just makes me cringe. The classics are the nicest to me, it's why I prefer the R.A.D style over all the others.
  17. I think it really comes down on whether the dancer needs it. Some who aren't that flexible would probably require that extra bit more but when I see a dancer in an over split grand jete it doesn't look as nice as a grande jete with both legs at the same height. Does that make sense? Like this here is far nicer looking to me than this or this but I suppose that is just me.
  18. If, and when, I get to it it'll be only in the pressence of my tutor or a professional as to me personally it is not something that should be done on your own. Too many things can go wrong, especially that which you have listed. Some people, like your DD, will most likely just have it naturally. I bet her lines are gorgeous.
  19. They are a size 6.5 XX, darned, sewed a broken in already. Been worn once and are already far too soft for me. I find the Opera 1 shoes follow the same fit and style as the classics, in my opinion anyway. The wings feel a little shorter but that could just be me. PM me for details of interested and I'll give you the link to my eBay, where they are. Selling them for £15 which includes postage.
  20. Bunheads muscle and joint gel is amazing but it's expensive, I would try it as it's anti-flammatory. Dance direct does it but it's £15 for 10ml. It's practically drilled into me to pull up so it's natural to me. My next goal is to get my basic side split, I don't have them yet and then I'll work on my over split. Thank you for your advice.
  21. So since loosing weight and slowly gaining my flexibility back (I got my front splits over Halloween) I have now noticed that I have very hyper extended knees. Like when my knees are locked back there is a very definite curve running from my hip to my foot and now I'm starting to notice pain on the outside of my knees, mainly my right. Should I be holding back and stopping locking my knees back and opt for straighter legs or should I be doing something else instead? I was meant to speak to my instructor (Neil is an absolute darling, he is amazing.)about it today but I completely forgot. Any advice? Also I've been using bunheads muscle and joint gel and it is amazing but I'm running low and £15 for a small 10ml bottle is pretty expensive. Can anyone recommend an alternative?
  22. what is the true purpose of soft pointes and what techniques are they used for? Why soft pointes and not soft shank pointe shoes? I've never had a pair of soft pointes, was always put straight onto pointe and so it's always alluded me. Also I apologise if this has already been done, I tried searching for the topic but it just kept coming up empty so either the search doesn't work on my phone or there are no topics which seems unlikely.
