I've turned into a shameless groupie and booked two shows. If you see a stranger waving at you at the Sat matinee, that'll be me -

The Royal Ballet: Giselle, Feb-April 2016

I thought Ryo did just fine - a manly prince (he had to be to outshine a very hunky Hilarion) who came to regret his selfishness and possibly even deserved saving. There might have been a few skew-wiff moments, but nothing to distract the flow. He and Lamb looked quite good together - and Lamb has really tapped into something of late, making her character come across on an emotional level. Wish I could say something like that about Golding's Albrecht tonight. I don't know who he was, a lad, a cad, did he feel any shame? He seemed to have focussed on the technical aspects of the role, working so hard to jump enormeously high to do his beats, you could see every ounce of concentration and effort going into it. It's probably hard on the nerves to share a stage with two spellbinding leads, but I feel quite strongly that it would be better to try and match their stage craft instead of trying to outdance them. But oh, the Osipova and Nunez show - effortless artistry and beauty.- 500 replies

Favourite ballerinas
Coated replied to sybarite2015@'s topic in Performances seen & general discussions
Love at first sight: Natalia Osipova and Celine Gittens Dancers I happily book in pretty much any ballet (from companies I see often enough): Yasmine Naghdi, Marianela Nunez, Alina Cojacaru, Francesca Hayward, Beatriz Stix-Brunell, Tamara Rojo, Delia Matthews, Ksenia Ovsyanick, Fumi Kaneko, Momoko Hirata Dancers I rarely see who left a deep impression with 1 or 2 performances: Smirnova, Lopatkina, Zakharova, Tereshkina, Yuan Yuan Tan, Kathleen Breen Combes and most of the Tanztheater Wuppertal cast that has been touring London the last few years. -

....asking won't hurt, right? I'd happily add a Nunez/Muntagirov Giselle to my collection, or watch it on Digital Theatre if that's easier for the RB to distribute.- 500 replies

What is your LEAST favourite ballet?
Coated replied to Lisa O`Brien's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
Alice in Wonderland. Yawny McYawn with the exception of a few nice touches and Zen as queen of hearts. Mats Ek's R&J Most Fauns unless exceptionally cast. Really exceptionally. -

The first thing my delightful brain did with this info was to imagine the CdB as burly dock workers with moustaches. I'd probably watch that Giselle, too. Muntagirov and Nunez are definitely one of my new favourite pairings, and I suspect I won't ever tire of them. I like that Nunez is a sunny Giselle, a happy young girl in love who is getting on with life (...until she dies) instead of wanly wilting away with heart disease. Obviously I don't know what Nunez's thoughts on the role are, but I'm reading it as a really positive interpretation of a person with a medical condition. Having a condition does not prescribe the character of a person and Nunez's interpretation as a generally happy teenager who is trying to ignore her condition makes a welcome change. It also makes the rising from the grave scene incredibly poignant to me. It's always the scene that gets me most, but having a delightful sunny Giselle become this sorrowful Wili seems to make it even more tragic. I'm very happy that I have one more ticket, though that's not enough...- 500 replies

I suspect the new one on the TheatreBoard will overtake this one in a matter of weeks. I wasn't too lucky at Giselle yesterday. One of the St John's ambulance women spent the entire first act fiddling with her phone, the other one kept shifting around to get a good view. The two Russians in front of me had a lot to say to each other, and also needed to check their phones regularly. The two older possibly tipsy ladies provided some light relief by carrying on a conversation SOTTO VOCE during the act 2 overture.

Mdm Gautreau's maiden name was Avegno and Jann Parry pieced together that the character must be her mother after some googling http://dancetabs.com/2016/02/royal-ballet-wheeldon-bill-strapless-after-the-rain-within-the-golden-hour-london/- 186 replies

ENB Announces Autumn '16 / Spring '17 Season
Coated replied to Bruce Wall's topic in Ballet / Dance news & information
Well, I'm definitely intrigued by seeing two different Giselle's in one season by the same company and have already made a little detour to the ENO website for some 'just in case' bookings. Didn't realise they'd redone the whole ENO booking site - if it works from a tablet now, that would be a nice bonus. Edit: Hmm, just noticed that it said booking opens for friends on the 19th. I'm not actually a friend and just booked a few tickets - hope that's a valid booking since they took my money.... Some glitch on the ENO site?- 20 replies

Wheeldon Triple Bill - February/March 2016
Coated replied to Jacqueline's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
I'm not sure that the 'double portrait' is fact - it is represented as fact in some sources, regarded as speculation in others. Strapless the novel does seem to be a little on the lurid side, and I'm not sure how some of the facts sit with later portraits of Mdme being painted (one with a dangling strap...) and well received- 186 replies

Laurretta Summerscales promoted to Principal at ENB
Coated replied to SPD444's topic in Ballet / Dance news & information
ENB has one higher rank of 'Lead Principal' (Alina Cojocaru · Isaac Hernández · Fernanda Oliveira · Tamara Rojo · Erina Takahashi.), but I'm sure that's only a question of time for Laurretta -
Chalk Farm is closer to the top end of Camden market, if you're on a Edgeware train, I'd get out there. If you're on the High Barnet branch, get out at Mornington Crescent. The 168 bus goes from opposite the Camden Market Stables entrance to Euston Station if you prefer buses TfL is good for planning, but sneaky. If they think there might be congestion, they are perfectly happy to send you a complete roundabout way...

Very chuffed for Lauretta It was quite a lively show with an enthusiastic crowd, and the onstage promotion was the icing on the cake. Perfect ending for a long run of very entertaining pirates.

You're in for a treat on the 30th, Lin. Excellent characterisation from the debutants, their performance had real charm (and fine dancing, of course)

Another Rhapsody matinee, another interpretation. It felt more mellow than the last Osipova/McRae outing, and Osipova brought a serenity with her today that made me feel quite emotional at times. Their last outing was a bit of the McRae show, today Osipova arrived in full glory. I can see what people mean when they mention that her back hasn't quite achived the RB pliancy, but I guess even great ballerinas need to have something to work on. Someone also seems to have set fire under the boys feet, and with one exception they were nearly as good as the girls today

That'll teach me being blasé about missing a performance, assuming you can catch it later....now I wish I'd decided to cough and sneeze all over the audience in last year's run when Morera was on. Glad they have a lovely replacement in the shape of Fumi at the ready though, that definitely sweetens the twinge of disappointment

I think MAB and Don Q have pretty much summed it up for me as well. It was a fun and charming matinee and definitely worth a day off to see Brooklyn Mack as Conrad. I loved Ksenia's soft dancing and gorgeous smile - she really did look like she owns the stage. Can't wait to see her in other principal roles. Oh, and Zhang's pirate-repelling sneer was truly fearful. If anyone looked at me like that, I'd drop the odalisque as well...

Irregardless of which performances I might prefer (shockingly I liked both for different reasons), the thing I don't particularly enjoy are X-factor type headlines for ballet reviews. I want professional reviewers to review the performance itself, not compare the performance of dancers to each other in a slightly lame attempt to create sensationalism.

I decided to sit out Tosca this time, though your review made me think that maybe I shouldn't have. I wasn't certain whether Gheorghiu would deliver the goods and decided to stick with my memories of a fabulous Sondra Radvanovsky from a couple of years back.
