  1. A difficult one this............. Two adults arrive at the ballet with a small child and try to sit her in between them. But she is having none of it and spends her whole time climbing over the adults, her feet kicking the people in the adjacent seats and her arms flailing in their sightlines. She also frequently stands up on the floor and on her seat etc., thus impeding the view of the people behind. I felt that she spoiled the performance for at least 5 people yet none of us said a word. Would others have stayed similarly silent?
  2. As I have said before (sorry!), I don't understand the need for guests (or for us to be proposing guests on here) when the RB has at least 3 more Armands at its disposal already.

  4. This is great! It really seems as if all the pleading on the ROH website and all the writing in to Kevin O'Hare has yielded the 'right' outcome. Yippee
  5. We were back to the authentic version this afternoon (with Ken Saruhashi) and it really made more dramatic sense - to me (in this versions) anyway.
  6. Of course, I love Cesar Corrales (and I hugely admired his Albrecht). I also love seeing well-performed entrechats six (Paris Opera Ballet and Mikhailovsky both up to 32; Royal Ballet rather less). However, last night, they felt out of place - not so much Albrecht dancing to exhaustion as a special audience-pleasing trick which seemed out of sync with the production and the surroundings. I couldn't understand why they suddenly appeared after several shows without them.
  7. Yes, Alison, but such issues should surely be taken into consideration when the composition of triple bills is being decided?

I do agree about this but I can't help feeling that Kevin O'Hare should be giving his own dancers the opportunities which are available in this triple bill rather than bringing in so many guests. And why have Armands near to, or in, their forties (Bolle and also Bonelli - who has been cast many times before) when there are at least three wonderful, tall, young candidates in the 'home team' (Muntagirov; Ball; Clarke). Do I need to quickly run for cover ??? !!!!!
  9. Is it any longer possible to switch on the TV/Radio or visit anywhere in London without encountering Wayne McGregor? I do like him, by the way; but.............!!!!

I'd like to post something more substantive later but, for the moment, I need to record my delight at the very affecting performance yesterday afternoon from the ENB 'home team' of Alison McWhinney (Giselle), Yonah Acosta (Albrecht), Isabelle Brouwers (Myrtha) and Daniel Kraus (Hilarion). The power of the Wilis was especially palpable.
  11. It's nice to combine shopping with a trip to the ballet but I have now sat through consecutive performances of Giselle at the Coli with my space invaded by other people's carrier bags. Other choice Coli episodes this week have included: my neighbour playing games on a phone throughout Act 2 - it was shielded by a scarf; having other people's coats with heavy pockets draped over me (I did take action on that one); and needing to trudge through a mass of discarded plastic cups on one's way out down the row. And please don't get me started on the changed layout at the Coli (with the Box Office now occupying foyer space) which just makes getting in and out of the theatre more difficult for everyone.

  15. I had the privilege and pleasure of seeing Muntagirov dance one of his ABT Solors (2004). He was very enthusiastically received by the audience. I don't want to speculate but I am sure that dancers of Muntagirov's calibre receive all sorts of invitations to guest that we never hear anything about because their 'home company' has first call on their time. Indeed, I have heard it said (by another dancer) that some companies such as ABT like their guests to be able to commit a block of time rather than flying in and out and that is only possible, of course, if their schedules permit.
  16. Thank you for the clarification, FLOSS. I have a feeling that Muntagirov already is a role model for some of the younger dancers. One has only to watch the faces of the 'bystanders' in Act 3 of Sleeping Beauty to sense that.
  17. I guess that the Nichol brothers have been in residence for some time. It looks to be a lovely flat.
  18. This seems an extraordinary thing to say, FLOSS. It is surely the gracious (apparent) ease of Muntagirov's dancing (especially in princely roles) which helps to make his performances so special. Are you suggesting that this amazing facility, doubtless borne of very hard work as well as innate talent, is a minus and that male dancers should make their dancing look effortful in order that we might appreciate it more? If Muntagirov (and, maybe, others) set the bar high that is surely something for other dancers to aspire to and for us, their lucky audience, to marvel at.
  19. So how is anyone supposed to know where to look? I feel another e-mail coming on. It is discourteous to the performers for their audience to be unaware of the changes and at least one online reviewer has named the wrong dancers in his account of Tuesday night's Sleeping Beauty.
  20. But an extra one was announced, so that makes twelve. I wonder which area(s) of the ROH were 'honoured' with an amendment sheet? Or maybe they were only available if one purchased a red programme?
  21. I just wanted to record appreciation for last night's performance of The Sleeping Beauty. In a week of 8 shows (mixing SB and Nutcracker), the fact that there were 11 cast changes* gives an indication of the difficulties the company is experiencing - (I see on another thread that ENB is similarly afflicted). There were, however, two real jewels among the substitutions: Yasmine Naghdi was an exquisite Fairy of the Golden Vine and isabella Gasparini showed us as Red Riding Hood that she can do 'terrified' as well as she does radiant. There were no alteration slips in the area of the theatre where I was sitting (only an announcement about one relatively minor change) and my concentration wandered at times because of the fascination of working out who was on. Can that really be Claire Calvert as one of Princess Aurora's Friends? Yes it can! Tierney Heap had replaced her as the Lilac Fairy by the way. { * my count - others may know differently.]
  22. A nice, off-beat "young" choice and one which has made me think.
