  6. Principal Casting Autumn 2014 UK Tour and Nutcracker Principal casting for English National Ballet’s Autumn UK tour and Nutcracker is today announced. Joining English National Ballet from Boston Ballet, Alejandro Virelles makes his debut as Principal with the Company, performing the role of Prince Siegfried alongside Alina Cojocaru’s Odette/Odile in Derek Deane’s Swan Lake. Arguably one of the most popular ballets created, Swan Lake tells the story of Prince Siegfried’s love for the Swan Queen, Odette, and their battle against the evil magician, Rothbart. Deane’s traditional production tours to Manchester (8-11 Oct), Milton Keynes (11-15 Nov), Liverpool (18-22 Nov) and the London Coliseum (11 Dec-4 Jan). Swan Lake also sees lead roles from Ksenia Ovsyanick, who was recently promoted to Soloist and makes her debut as Odette/Odile, and Zdenek Konvalina; Tamara Rojo and the winner of Emerging Dancer 2014 Junor Souza; Fernanda Oliveira and Dmitri Gruzdyev; and Shiori Kase, who was promoted to First Soloist and makes her debut as Odette/Odile, with Yonah Acosta, who was promoted to Principal. After a critically acclaimed run at the London Coliseum in July this year, Coppélia begins a UK tour to Southampton (15-18 Oct), Oxford (28 Oct-1 Nov) and Bristol (4-8 Nov). Following their debut performance in the lead roles of Franz and Swanilda, Yonah Acosta performs alongside Shiori Kase on tour. Other lead roles in Coppélia include Junor Souza and Lauretta Summerscales; Tamara Rojo and Alejandro Virelles; Erina Takahashi and Fernando Bufalá; and Fernanda Oliveira and Zdenek Konvalina. Coppélia is the comic tale of an eccentric toymaker and his mechanical doll. Dr Coppélius, the toymaker, creates a lifelike Coppélia doll and wishes to bring her to life. English National Ballet's production is choreographed by Ronald Hynd. Léo Delibes' score is played by English National Ballet's full orchestra. Nutcracker returns to the London Coliseum this Christmas from Thursday 11 December 2014 - Sunday 4 January 2015. First performed in 2010 to celebrate English National Ballet’s 60th anniversary, Wayne Eagling’s version has since been seen by over 300,000 people. Making her debut appearance as Clara in this version of Nutcracker is Katja Khaniukova who performs alongside Ken Saruhashi’s debut as the Prince and Daniele Silingardi’s debut as the Nutcracker. Other lead Principals for Nutcracker include Alina Cojocaru, Alejandro Virelles and Junor Souza; Laurretta Summerscales with identical twins Guilherme Menezes and Vitor Menezes, both making their debuts as the Prince and Nutcracker; and Tamara Rojo, Junor Souza and Max Westwell, who makes his debut as the Prince in this production. This is English National Ballet’s 11th production of Nutcracker since it performed its first full length Nutcracker in 1950, its founding year. Since then, English National Ballet has established the tradition of performing Nutcracker at Christmas every year. Casting for Swan Lake at the London Coliseum will be announced shortly. Principal casting in detail Casting is subject to change. Please see www.ballet.org.uk for more details. 7. I would suggest you follow the teacher's advice as soon as possible. It is worth searching the doing dance forum as I'm sure there have been some mentions of dance physios, which I guess would be the ideal. Can your DD's teacher recommend anyone in your area?
  8. A terrific afternoon at the European Athletics championships too! Poor Chunkydog went into hiding (well into her favourite spot in the porch) as I was yelling encouragement at the TV!
  9. Hello ABallerina and welcome to the forum. I can't answer your questions but I am sure some of our other members will be able to help. Given that you are so young, please make sure your parents are ok about you contributing to the forum.
  10. Some more details have been issued about Elves and the Shoemaker: http://www.balletcoforum.com/index.php?/topic/7604-press-release-northern-ballet-premi%C3%A8res-enchanting-new-ballet-for-children/#entry101951 Having seen both Ugly Duckling and Three Pigs I can say that you don't have to take young children to enjoy these ballets but one of the joys of going to the performance has been seeing how much the young audience has enjoyed themselves.
  11. There is an interview with choreographer Daniel de Andrade on the Northern Ballet website about creating Elves and the Shoemaker. The Company has also issued a short film of early rehearsals.
  12. Porthesia, sorry to hear about the pancreatitis which is not nice at all. I hope the gall bladder op goes well. Thanks for the update. Virtual hugs winging their way to you all.
  13. Northern Ballet premières enchanting new ballet for children Northern Ballet’s much-anticipated new ballet for children, Elves & the Shoemaker, will have its World Première in Leeds this autumn before touring to 16 venues across the UK in spring 2015, including performances alongside Northern Ballet’s national tour, with further venues to be announced soon. Elves & the Shoemaker, choreographed by Northern Ballet’s Ballet Master Daniel de Andrade, is the latest in Northern Ballet’s award-winning series of Short Ballets for Small People which already includes the hugely popular Ugly Duckling and Three Little Pigs. The short ballets have been seen live by more than 53,000 people and on TV by more than 300,000 people in the CBeebies TV adaptations, for which Ugly Duckling received a Children’s BAFTA. The series of ballets have been created to introduce families and young children across the UK to live dance, music and theatre. Children from St. Anthony’s Primary School in Beeston, Leeds have been involved in the creation of the ballet. Nine children were selected to take part, all of whom have had no previous exposure to dance. They attended several rehearsals at Northern Ballet’s headquarters and have worked with Ballet Master Daniel de Andrade during the creative process, giving their feedback to help shape the ballet. They will also attend a preview performance in September where they will be invited to give their honest opinion of the finished ballet. Retelling the famous Brothers Grimm story about a poor and hard-working shoemaker who receives some much-needed help from two elves, this enchanting, colourful and heart-warming production will last approximately 40 minutes. Elves & the Shoemaker will be set to an original score composed by Philip Feeney with set designs by Ali Allen. Selina McGonagle, Director of Learning at Northern Ballet, said, ‘We are delighted to be giving young children and families the opportunity to experience our latest children’s ballet. It’s really great that this time we are touring more widely across the UK giving even more audiences the chance to experience this truly magical performance.’ -ENDS- Notes to Editors Northern Ballet is renowned for its full-length narrative productions which embrace popular culture and take inspiration from literature, opera, or give a unique interpretation of classical ballets. The Leeds-based company is committed to touring throughout the UK and overseas, developing new audiences for dance. Northern Ballet is funded by Arts Council England and Leeds City Council. Elves & the Shoemaker is the third in Northern Ballet’s series of Short Ballets for Small People which aims to produce ballet specifically for young children and to engage families in theatre, art and music in a fun, lively and approachable way. 18. S-P, I am not trying to put a dampener on your plan B, but I believe that a career as an actor is just as, if not more in some respects, precarious as that of a dancer. You talk about being a dancer in the corps but in many of the smaller companies dancers have much more opportunity because the size of the companies precludes traditional productions that have, eg huge swathes of swans or wilis. Whatever your decision do what you feel is right for you and your wellbeing.
  19. You may be able to get an unpaid internship to get some experience. I think you would have to approach each company though. The more technical jobs probably require qualifications - eg stage management etc. I know of several people from the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts who have had placements in the 2 companies I follow. Otherwise most of the ballet companies advertise administrative jobs on their websites so it is probably worth checking to see if there is anything on offer. Can your careers advisor not help with practical advice?
  20. Hello new123 and welcome to the Forum. Please let us know how you get on.
  21. I've just seen on the news that Lauren Bacall has passed away at the age of 89. A very stylish actress in the grand Hollywood style. RIP
  22. Hello Lindsay777 and welcome to the Forum. I hope we'll hear more from you.
  23. Petit Jete, you, as a ballet teacher know a lot more about ballet than me! I've never been to a dance class and know nothing technical at all about ballet.
