  1. Kristen McGarrity, ex-BRB, has released this video on You Tube. As well as herself it features several BRB including William Bracewell, Delia Matthews, Emily Smith, Maureya Lebowitz and ????

  3. Hi Michelle, I've moved your query to Doing Dance as you may get some more responses there. Also, as SarahW suggests it is well worth using the search facility on the Doing Dance forum as there have been discussions about bursaries in the past.

  7. Hello jadeava and welcome to the Forum! I can't answer your question but I am sure other members will be able to come up with suggestions. Do let us know how you get on.
  8. That is how I have read it too, tabitha. 9/26 did time at White Lodge - is that a good percentage?
  9. This performance has been running around my head since I saw and was bowled over by it on Friday evening. And make no mistake, I was bowled over by it. I think, though, that you have to think of it as an integrated whole where the visual concept and music are as important as the dancers. Without any one of these elements the piece would fail, whereas more conventionally you could change the costumes and perhaps even the score and still have something meaningful. Indeed David Nixon demonstrated how the music could be changed but you could still have the same choreography at an open rehearsal day a few years ago. Where to start. The recorded music is in surround sound - I was on the front row and there was a small speaker directly in front of me but the music seemed to be coming from all around the auditorium. I just loved it! Lights lit the audience on a number of occasions. The piece started in total darkness with dancers encased in black but with lights on their costumes. It was a quite surreal experience because you could not see the dancers at all (or at least I could not) just the lights moving perhaps like a constellation in the galaxy. This transmogrified into dancers holding what could be large lampshades with mirrored interiors. We still could not see the dancers except, this time, for their hands coming through the horizontally held "lamp shades". Finally the lighting ramped up and we could see the dancers and also at times ourselves as the back of the set was mirrored. The lighting meant that the audience was not on view for the whole performance. The company of dancers was made up of six dancers from Paris Opera Ballet and nine from the (newly renamed Company Wayne McGregor). They were, without exception, utterly magnificent as they performed McGregor's signature sinuous ferral moves and including extreme positions and extensions. For me there were two notable duets and lots of combinations of the dancers. A glass screen came down in front of the mirrors with some dancers in front and some behind the screen - there were some fantastical effects where the dancers behind the screen were multiplied in the faceted mirrors but those in front were not. Sometimes the dancers were mirroring each other and sometimes performing different sequences. Then another screen came down with two revolving circles of glass and that caused the lighting effects to flutter around the auditorium somewhat like the effect (but more so) of a glitterball. The 75 intense minutes flew by in the blink of an eye! As I said in my first post it is an outstanding work but think of it as an integrated whole rather than a dance work. I am tremendously looking forward to seeing it again on Wednesday. BTW, the audience was very varied and very enthusiastic, with many people leaping to their feet at the end.
  10. Kevin O'Hare joined SWRB in 1984 (now BRB) when both Ashton and McMillan were still alive and active (although perhaps Ashton was winding down). So it is not entirely accurate to say that they were not instrumental in making his career. And of course SWRB was based in London at the time and still had very close links with RB.

  12. Nothing will help if your toenails are ingrown until you have them sorted. I know because of the issues I had and I have never danced!
  13. I've just finished Simon Scarrow's Hearts of Stone. It is a departure from his Roman Legion series being set (mostly) on the Greek island of Lefkas just before and during WW2. I enjoy his books tremendously and this was no exception.
  14. Ian, I've just checked the programme - the company is described as Company Wayne McGregor (formerly Wayne McGregor | Random Dance). I'll change the title of the thread.

  16. Tree of Codes opened tonight (although I hadn't actually realised I had booked for the first night!). It is astounding! So astounding that the first thing I did when I got in was book a ticket for Wednesday night! The performance runs for 75 minutes without an interval. More anon...
  17. Hello Yara and welcome to the Forum. I think Hopeforpointe has made some good points. If you use the search facility there is plenty of advice and comments on pointe shoe fittings and I am sure other members will chip in with your query too.

  20. Please do not do as Karen has suggested if your toenails are badly ingrown. I tried this to disastrous effect on my left toenail. I then needed an emergency appointment with the podiatrist as I was in so much pain. When she started digging around oh boy was I screaming but I had instant relief when she dug out a large piece of nail from under my skin! What Karen has suggested works if your nails are not actually ingrown. It worked for me for years but I am not a dancer.
  21. I think the lady at the shop was probably trying to be helpful. Although I have never danced, both my big toe nails became gradually ingrown over the last couple of years. Anyone who knows me can testify to the pain I was in nearly 2 years ago when my right toe nail became infected. I could hardly walk for months. You need to see a podiatrist for advice. There is a procedure where the side of the toe nail is removed. I have had both done. I was told it was very painful after the procedure was first done but believe me compared to the pain I had been in before it most definitely was not. You just have to be careful which shoes you wear for a couple of weeks. I had only been able to wear one pair of shoes for months and when I was finally able to wear another pair without pain I threw them in the bin, even though they were favourite shoes! I believe a lot of dancers have to have this procedure. I would urge you to see a podiatrist/chiropodist as soon as possible. You should be able to get a referral from your doctor, as I did.
  22. I read something ages ago that said you should not clean your teeth for at least half an hour after you have eaten as you can damage the enamel even more.
  23. I think Miki is growing into her acting very well. She was a total delight as Sylvia! Yes, I'm thrilled Yvette has been promoted too. She's one of those dancers who seems to be subsumed into a role very quickly.
  24. Everything is bad for you in excess! Lisa, I wouldn't worry to much if you are only doing this for a couple of days but do be careful. I quite often watch Lorraine in the mornings and she has recently featured a "Get ready for your bikini" eating and exercising plan. They have mentioned over and over again about the need to have a balanced diet and use the "hand portion control" method for proteins and carbohydrates. Your hand should be able to cover the portion. It may be worth looking on the website, I believe various recipes are on there to give you some ideas.
  25. Seriously though Farfalina, have you looked at Superbreak ? I hadn't used this company for a long time (they were best known for integrated rail/hotel bookings) but recently discovered that a hotel I had used in the past was £20 per night cheaper on Superbreak than via the hotel's own website or other internet booking companies! You do have to pay up front but that is also the case with many hotels with their offers.
