I am looking forward to seeing Marianela & Thiago in R&J too next Friday. My only trip to ROH this season so I shall not be able to compare casts sadly- 119 replies

Royal Ballet - which way now?
patsomerset replied to Lindsay's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
I agree with you Janet. I do not go to ROH very often but I am nearly always on my own as I am usually on my way through London to somewhere else. I do not find the experience intimidating and the staff are very welcoming. There are always other people on their own but the people who speak during the intervals are nearly always friendly couples or families. I have never eaten on my own there mainly because I don't really enjoy eating out on my own. I get no pleasure from it, but I can enjoy a ballet on my own. In fact I think I concentrate better -
I am sorry to hear this. It is against all the Freecycle rules, regulations and ethos to which you sign up, but I don't know how this is monitored or whether it can be monitored. I have used Freecycle several times and I felt that the people who collected items were genuine but of course there are always people who spoil things

Try asking them to turn the sound down although you may have to wait until the first interval. My local Odeon played both this and Don Q far too loud but it appears that individual cinemas have some control over the volume. I found I was not the only one who found it way too loud It's worth asking

Agreed. A wonderful afternoon. This must be the Bolshoi's 'signature' ballet. It suits them so well. Does any other company have a male corps as large or as fine as theirs? Possibly only they can pull this off. I hope they bring it to London next time they come

Do try Freecycle. It is amazing what other people in your area want/need and they come and take it away

Ballet in the cinema 2013-2014
patsomerset replied to jmhopton's topic in Ballet / Dance news & information
I agree about the Pathe website but I have found what I think is a glitch in the ROH website. If I search for a cinema near me the only one which comes up is a nearby town, Wellington, which has just started ROH relays. No mention of our local Odeon which has been building up an audience for live transmissions over the last two or three years. I don't know where the problem lies but I am contacting both sides to see if it can be fixed. Those of us who go regularly know what is coming up but people new to these transmissions, and there are quite a few, may be missing out . It may well apply to other towns than Taunton- 104 replies

Well according to the Bolshoi website and the Pathe website the cast is as DonQ stated in Post 33 and, as I understand it, it is Live- 104 replies

I agree about the price. We are paying £13 at the Odeon. That's the Senior price by the way- 104 replies

The Royal Ballet's Don Quixote, 2013

Even though have already said how much I enjoyed it I agree with several things you have said particularly about Kitri's entrance and I missed the bridemaid's variation too -
The Royal Ballet's Don Quixote, 2013

I was delighted by the cinema live relay. It was the only performance I have seen and the only one I will see, so I am pleased that others rate this the best performance so far and that it was for the live transmission which goes worldwide. I was a bit nervous after the reports of mishaps on Tuesday but after a while forgot all about that as Carlos Acosta and Marianela Nunez seemed so confident and assured in their performances and seemed to pass this on to the rest of the cast. Even at the end they still looked as though they were having the best time ever, and so were we. I imagine they were taking curtain calls long after the transmission came to an end My only worries were that the music was much too loud but the staff at the Odeon turned it down in the first interval, and that in some parts the stage looked too crowded and there was too much going on. The close ups were great. We were able to see the facial expressions and the lovely costumes in detail. Bravo to Acosta in that he seems to have created a Don Q suited to the RB style We had no technical hitches by the way which added to the pleasure -
I was obliged to turn my loft out earlier in the year to prepare for the loft insulation. Several things went to a charity shop but I have since disposed of several items through Freecycle, which seems to have groups worldwide. People will take things which charity shops can't, such as small electrical goods or upholstered items which do not have a fire retardant label. Seems very friendly too. I can recommend Freecycle

Ballet in the cinema 2013-2014
patsomerset replied to jmhopton's topic in Ballet / Dance news & information
I did not realise that the new Odeon website requires an upgrade of Internet Explorer. I only have the new version because my old computer died earlier in the year. I imagine there must be many people who can no longer book online. Even if you can get onto the website I find it very clumsy and difficult to navigate. I found Spartacus under something labelled 'advance book' but it did not appear in the 'Culture 'list. I managed to book a seat for myself but could not book a wheelchair space for a friend. I had to book this by telephone. Is this an improvement? I shall complain at my local Odeon when I go next- 104 replies

The live transmission of Spartacus on 20 October has at last appeared on the Odeon website and tickets are on sale. It seems to be showing in Odeon cinemas nationwide. 4pm start I find the new Odeon website quite difficult to navigate. Anyone agree?- 104 replies

BRB casting - Autumn 2013

I saw Momoko as Aurora in Plymouth in March 2010 so she has made her debut. Very lovely she was too -
I enjoyed hearing from someone who saw all three performances and found a lot to enjoy in all three. I liked your comparison of Lantratov to Errol Flynn. He did indeed present a very elegant, glamorous figure right though to the curtain calls!

My local cinema was similarly under occupied for the Ashton mixed bill but I think that was more down to the time of year, the hot weather and the lack of publicity. Some would not know what an Ashton mixed bill was composed of whereas they might have known one or more of the individual items. Normally the screen is full for ballet now and I am hoping it will continue in the Autumn. I am with you about Jewels instead of Nutcracker. I have never quite got to grips with Jewels and am reluctant to pay full whack to see it again but I would give it another go in the cinema

Yes, in spite of not being over the moon, I did enjoy it. Ideally I like to come away excited and/or moved and it was only partially successful in those respects. I'm probably a bit of an old stick in the mud but so far only Giselle, R&J and Don Q really do either one or the other for me, so far anyway!
