News from Germany, Austria, Switzerland

Oh this is good news! Raymondo Rebeck, a Berliner, was one of a bunch of wonderful talents trained at the Berlin Ballet School (Mario Perricone, Angela Reinhardt, Gregor Seyffert, to name a few and my favorites) in the 1980ies. Rebeck participated in the Prix de Lausanne in 1987, if I'm correct, so as a citizen of East Germany back then. He won a cash prize, according to the PdL archive, but did not/could not chose a partner school. Guess why.

I remember him as a beautiful and passionate dancer, who also had lyrical talents (e g. in a Bejart Triple bill "Night" at Staatsoper Berlin alongside Mario Perricone and Barbara Schroeder, who is a ballet masters with Staatsballett Berlin since many years). Sweet memories come back.

Raimondo Rebeck was appointend the next ballet director at Badisches Staatsballett Karlsruhe today, starting with season 2024/25. He follows Bridget Breiner who leaves for Ballet on the Rhine, replacing Demis Volpi there, who leaves for Hamburg Ballet. Rebeck was a principal dancer at the Berlin State Opera and the Deutsche Oper Berlin, he then continued as ballet master, choreographer, teacher, coach and director of the NRW Junior Ballet at Dortmund. His deputy director will be Kristína Paulin, born in Bratislava and for many years a member of Hamburg Ballet. She is now a choreographer and will also be the new choreographer in residence at Karlsruhe.

Sounds like Musical Chairs plays out in the German Ballet scene!

I think I saw rehearsal photos of J. Feyferlik with Maria Baranova, but can't find them anymore. Jinhao Zhang and Lauretta Summerscales seem to be very busy in the US resp. In the UK in Nov/Dec, according to their ig posts. So my guess is the premiere of Le Parc will be danced by Young/Mckay.

One of my friends saw Ms Badenes for the first time earlier this year.  So impressed was he that  he insisted  I accompany him to see her in the Remember Me programme last month.  She is very lovely and her performances were of the highest order, and yes, I did have the addded pleasure of seeing her with Messrs Vogel and  Reilly.  She totally deserves her win.

Rémy Fichet will direct the ballet company at Leipzig from 2024/25

Rémy Fichet is the designated new Director of the Leipzig Ballet and will take over its artistic direction at Oper Leipzig from the 2024/25 season. In succession to the previous Ballet Director and Chief Choreographer Mario Schröder, Rémy Fichet will continue the tradition of the Leipzig Ballet as established by Uwe Scholz. For the upcoming seasons, collaborations with innovative choreographers from the international dance scene are being planned. Tobias Wolff, Director of Oper Leipzig: "We are deliberately making the change to a curatorial-artistic direction at the Leipzig Ballet, and I am truly grateful that our preferred candidate Rémy Fichet has chosen our institution. I look forward to new creative formats and choreographies with the company."

Rémy Fichet, born in Amiens (France), completed his dance training at the Paris Opera Ballet School. After two years as a dancer at the Ballet de l'Opéra national de Paris, he joined Leipzig Ballet in 2000, performing in the ensemble until 2008, most recently as a soloist. Following his career as a dancer, he remained loyal to Leipzig Ballet. As scheduler and project coordinator, and since 2012 as Artistic Production Manager, Fichet provided the structural framework for the successful work of the Leipzig Ballet, with additional qualifications from two years of part-time management studies and a Master of Arts degree, which he completed with distinction at the Palucca University of Dance Dresden in 2023. Fichet established first-time specialised dance medicine services for the ballet ensemble at Oper Leipzig and values long-term, individually tailored support for the dancers and the next generation of choreographic creatives.

I really like how Stuttgart celebrates their dancers on social media, including debuts.

I don’t know if this is the right thread to post this, but I just wanted to say that I booked tickets for the Dresden opera house this week and it was one of the most straightforward online ticket purchases I have ever had! Really outstanding even for a non-German speaker.
Now looking forward to seeing Aaron Watkins’ Sleeping Beauty in March, not to mention the city of Dresden.

I don't know if it's hiding under a different thread that I failed to find, but did anyone here  go to Dresden Semperoper Ballett's new production of Swan Lake  by Johan Inger? (Or planning to go later?)

From the publicity that the company have released, I see it appears to be a reboot with new characters added. I assume there isn't going to be a traditional 32 fouettes, Dance of the 4 cygnets or Act 1 pas de trois?  I'll be interested to find out what our Germany-based members near Dresden thought.  🙂

For Cranko lovers: the choreographer's last work "Spuren" ("Traces"), which he made in April 1973 shortly before his suden death, will come back to the stage. It was partly reconstructed for the 50th anniversary gala for Cranko in July 2023, but only for one performance. Now Tamas Detrich said at a discussion about the work that it will return - possibly next season, he did not say that. Technically it was not Cranko's last work, there was another new creation in the same triple bill called "Green", which came after "Spuren" on the premiere evening. But well, it seems such an important ballet with it's policital/historical background. It was dedicated to Valery Panov at the time, a Kirov dancer who wanted to leave the Soviet Union.

are the dates for the Onegin casts known yet?  Summerscales and Gouneo are surely first night 🤞

It would be good to know the Lensky and Olga casts too.

Fiona, if I would know the casts for Lensky and Olga, I would post them here. This is was the Bavarian State Ballet has offered until now. They regularly publish the casts who study the roles without the exact dates.

One hundred years after Stravinsky and Nijinska created the powerful masterpiece Les Noces, New Movement Collective presents a re-imagining of this iconic ballet with a mass celebration.

Performed in Stravinsky's audacious choice for pianos and percussions, the cast includes singers from the Opera Holland Park Chorus, musicians from the Royal Academy of Music and Royal College of Music, and new choreography will be staged by a some of Britain’s best contemporary dancers.

Les Noces is a deeply emotive exploration of what is at the core of human relationships and commitment; New Movement Collective have additionally commissioned three contemporary composers to respond to Stravinsky’s score: the project's music director Yshani Perinpanayagam, emerging RAM composer Andrea Balency-Béarn, and Beatbox Champion MC Zani.

These new compositions will see choreographic explorations on the work’s themes performed by English National Ballet’sENBYouthCo and Manchester-based Chameleon Youth.

Please note the performance contains some poetry which uses adult language.

You can watch this beautiful waltz in rainbow-coloured costumes and with the colours of Ukraine here - go to 32.25', don't be surprised to see Priscilla Presley in a box, and watch till the end to see a very elegant Alexei Ratmansky in tails, followed by the students of the Vienna Ballet Academy.

I hope it works outside of Austria/Germany/Switzerland, it's online until March 1st. Scroll down to see the whole programme and the cast.

I've just watched the whole programme (except for the introduction; I don't speak a word of German).  It's so lovely to see some tradition, and so many young people keeping it up.  Nice little piece from Ratmansky.  I must try to read about this event; I watch bits of it every year but I would love to know more about it, who all the young people are who participate, etc.  Is it the equivalent of the debutantes ball that we used to have here in the UK, or can anybody be picked?  It brought a lump to my throat to see a couple with Down's Syndrome participating so beautifully.  Thank you for posting the link, @Angela

It does appear to be a debutantes' ball @Sim. My German isn't great, but I can pick out words. There were parents in boxes with champagne and mobile phones 🤭

I would have liked to see them step off the stairs and into a waltz instead of that rather ungainly shuffle.

Here are some stats - 160 débutante couples! and here is some history of the ball.

I would have died of embarrassment if my deb ball had been televised - live or on delay! Also I'm shocked that some of the young ladies had strapless gowns and some gowns with spaghetti straps 🤭 We were allowed off the shoulder but the "sleeve" had to be a minimum depth/length. No plunging necklines and no very low backs either. This sort of style, minus the damn crinoline!
