  1. I always thought they were the 'nationals' attacked by the mice at the start of the battle - though I can't say I'm in any way certain about that!! :-)

  9. PS - this cast performs the matinees on Nov 29th and Dec 24th. And both are of course sold out. Lucky people with tickets, I say!
  10. In celebration of Peter Wright's 90th birthday, The Royal Ballet present his 'Nutcracker' for the festive season (opening late November and running through to mid January). I was at one of the dress rehearsals, featuring the debut of Francesca Hayward, as SPF. Here are a few photos: Anna Rose O'Sullivan © Dave Morgan. 12. nah - cost about £1m to make (which is still a lot!) - perhaps the whole campaign cost the £17m
  13. I thought his role was more as a mentor, offering encouragement and ideas for collaboration for enhancing the choreography of the young, next generation choreographers, rather than making them follow directly in his stylistic footsteps. The new works in the Clore that were put on before the McGregor triple on the main stage, bear that out.
  14. perhaps they could crowd-fund it, and those that donate to a certain level get a free DVD (or blu-ray); higher sponsors get signed copies, that sort of thing...
  15. The prices (at least, the standing ones I use) were equivalent to a 'normal' triple bill of MacMillan/Ashton/AN Other or whatever. Triple bills were always cheaper when I first started attending (back in 2004) and often didn't sell out even then. Happily, they do seem more popular currently - the McGregor effect? As for moving ballet forward - McGregor's pieces are recently usually in pointe shoes (so yes, for me, definitely ballet), and whilst some of the steps are frankly ugly, many are astoundingly beautiful - so yes, I think he is expanding ballet, if not necessarily moving it 'forwards'. And whilst some may not, many of the the dancers do seem to enjoy working with him. Wasn't the same thing said of MacMillan in his earlier works and some of the steps and lifts he created? Many of the 'contemporary' Ballet Russes works back in the day (thinking of the Stravinsky's here in particular) were howled at - and are now considered classics (some of which though, I'd happily never see again I can't deny). Just my 2p worth :-)
  16. No, I like a lot of his works too. Not everything, but adore Infra, love Chroma, Woolf Works (though the mid section was a challenge at times), Carbon Life and so on. I also think the final pdd in Raven Girl a keeper (can see that in galas for a good few years). I also liked Live Fire Exercise (in a distinct minority there i think!). Saying that, there are a few I don't like, and the first 2 sections of Multiverse definitely fall into that category, though the newly commisioned part is one I like.
  17. Picking one or the other to replace the first two sections of Multiverse, sounds a plan. I actually liked the third, which had the new score only.
  18. Thought Madison Keesler this afternoon was compellingly wonderful. For me, it's a jaw dropping production, in which she gave a shut my mouth so my jaw can drop again, type performance. Give her more to do, Tamara!
  19. Just watched this again and it gets better with each viewing. Like both the pieces, and as with things it's always a pleasure to see dancers you don't always see in leading roles, and so close up too. With add something more coherent later
  20. Chroma - can't add much except is that got a bit of freshening up with the different crew, sometimes for the better, sometimes not quite so much. Carbon Life - well, i've always loved it, mainly for the 2nd song, the last song, and some of the duets (dancing that is) in between. While i like Brody Dalle, did miss hugely the stage striding Alison Mosshart almost glowering around the stage in apparent rage! Multiverse - can understand the majesty of what the two dancers (in each cast) were doing and how clever and skillful it was (both the choreography and its execution by each pair), but oh what a din. Stuffed paper and fingers in ear, and it didn't sound so bad - though with hardly any of the upper pitched notes and harmonies echoed in the twinned loops, it did become even more repetitive. The slightly more open middle section was fascinating in parts, but seemed somehow a little messy and incoherent - perhaps that was the point. I actually enjoyed the last section (the new music section, where there was actually music). I really wished he'd just done that as a short piece and left it at that.
  21. I was also at the rehearsal - here are some more photos of this most enjoyable mixed bill: Land of Nod (Marcelino Sambé): Hannah Sofo, Seamus Wilkinson © Dave Morgan. 23. I was at the 'dress rehearsal' in the Clore Studio, for Meta / Void and Fire, the short double bill running proir to the Wayne McGregor triple bill on the main stage (November 2016). The 2 choregraphers, Charlotte Edmonds and Robert Binet have been mentored by McGregor - and here are some early results Meta: Lukas Bjørneboe Brændsrød, Gina Storm-Jensen, Reece Clarke © Dave Morgan. 24. And in that case, I think the gents have been designed by a woman!! Lots of cubicles, but half hidden, paired urinals - we don't 'go' with our friend! Whilst an increase in the limited cubicle number is welcome, it does seem excessive to me (this is the new basement ones I speak of)
