  1. That looks interesting. I might put it on my list for things to see at the Lowry next year.
  2. Thanks for the description @Blossom. This is really helpful as I've been in 2 minds whether to book for it in the cinema relay or not as there wasn't so much information to help me decide if it's worth going. Your commentary is very informative.
  3. I've just been to the Saturday evening performance in Birmingham. I thought it was overall really lovely. I particularly loved the costumes, such vibrant colours and lovely period looks. All the courtiers looked great and I covet the Lilac fairys outfit very much. I am also full of admiration for how everyone managed the long cloaks. I loved the fairies especially Sofia Linares as Temperament. I also thought the garland dance was beautiful. Special mention to Ellis Small as the countess. I bet she'd be fun to hang out with. Miki Mizutani was exquisite as always, delicately effervescent in the rose adage and with beautiful port de bras. Max Maslen was very good but the Prince in this version really doesn't have enough to do. Nice jumps and good landings on the spins. I wish the practice of using men for Carabosse would go away. I really don't like men dancing women's parts. I thought it after RBs Cinderella and my view has not changed. No offence to Gabriel Anderson who does his best, but it just doesn't work for me and looks and walks like a man in a dress not a fairy. I also strongly prefer RBs costume and mime for her scenes. All the Act 3 dances were lovely especially Gus Payne as Bluebird and Reina Fuchigami as Florine. So all in all a great evening of dance, a few quibbles but overall amazing.
  4. Definitely. It looks a very stylish bouquet with the paper. I bet he was absolutely thrilled. More junior dancers probably don't get as many flowers so it probably made his night.
  5. I think that's probably by design. If the debutante Manon is given an experienced Gaoler it's probably one less thing to be nervous about. Gary always strikes me as such a supportive and encouraging person so he probably gets the newer Manons deliberately and vice versa. It's a good idea to mix the newer and more experienced dancers.
  6. I think people have less money and can't afford everything. I know I can't afford all the things I want to see. People make financial commitments and have plans and it's not always possible to add extra ballet shows because the money doesn't stretch. Especially as people may come from outside London and so need to factor in accommodation, travel costs etc. I went to see cirque du soleil last week and most of the circle wasn't sold out. There were a lot of empty seats. The last time I saw cirque was before Covid and it was sold out. I think people are having to watch the pennies more.
  7. Yes, no pointe shoes and a modernised score are not the attraction ENB might think. Bizet wrote lovely music, I'm not so keen on what people have done to it to revise and update it. I wasn't hugely keen and I am less keen now. I think not worth a trip to London for me, but I will be interested to hear what people think.
  8. Yes I agree, really not my favourite. Terrible music, no chemistry between the leads and a nonsensical story even for a ballet. That was the first Akram Khan ballet I'd seen and I was really unsure afterwards whether I would see another one and nearly didn't go to see his Giselle. I was so grateful to those who had been to Creature before and reminded me of the fact that Sadlers Wells had earplugs available. As otherwise I would have left.
  9. I always view this type of gala as a bit like a lucky dip or tombola. You may or may not get the prize (i.e. dancer) you wanted, but part of the fun is waiting to see what you do get. I've got a ticket for this one and am looking forward to it. I have hopes for seeing particular dancers (Vadim - because he pleases me the most of all the current dancers) but sometimes you discover someone you weren't aware of or see a partnership you didn't know and that's nice too. Like most people I have to make choices with money and prices are high for this gala (especially as I usually need travel and a hotel). I booked this one before knowing about the Ukraine one and can't afford both. Sometimes life is like that.
  10. I also saw Corsaire in London and it was pretty well sold if I remember correctly. I thought it was a lovely production and danced really well. It was the first time I'd seen Gabriele Frola and I thought he was amazing. I was hoping they'd do it again.
  11. Likewise, I was really hoping for a gala to capture some of their high points. The rest is a bit meh for me. I've seen Akram Khan's Giselle in Manchester and it was fine but I have no great desire to spend money on seeing it again. I liked the Skeaping one but again I've seen it quite recently when I was in London so not sure I will bother with going to Manchester (unless one of my friends wants to go strongly). I tend to prefer seeing a variety of works rather than the same thing in different places. The Forsythe might be interesting if I'm in London but not something I'd travel to especially. All in all it's a bit tame and uninspired. I think BRB and NB both have more interesting and varied things planned.
  12. According to the downloadable cast sheets on the BRB website Gabriel Anderson danced Carabosse on Friday 9 Feb. I wasn't there so can't confirm it personally but that's what it said happened. Personally I definitely prefer the role danced by a woman. I've seen various clips of men doing it and it never works for me very well (but then I don't really like men taking female roles in general as it doesn't really work for me on a personal level).
  13. Yeah I think there's a time (especially for art / dance students) when people think nudity is edgy and exciting. The older I get and the more often I go to spas etc in Germany which are textile free, the more I think most people look significantly better with more clothes on. As a student I went to something by Javier de Frutos where he was naked and thought it was hilarious. I think it was meant to be deep and meaningful but my friends and I couldn't stop laughing at it.
  14. I'm not hugely overwhelmed by the trailer. I want to wait and see what people think before I decide if it's worth a trip to London for. I am also interested to see what ENB decide to tour this year in case it comes any nearer me.
  15. Yeah I saw some of the pictures from some of the dancers on Instagram and that was my thought as well.
  16. Thanks for the detailed review PdQ. It was really interesting to hear your thoughts. It sounds like a lovely performance and I'm really looking forward to seeing it in Birmingham.
  17. I'm really looking forward to the new Triple Bill. I love the 4 last songs and I've also been really impressed with what Mthuthuzeli has been coming up with lately for NB and BB. He's really talented. Sketches should be quite interesting as well. I enjoyed it last year as it was good to see the variety (even if not all of it worked for me). Nice also to see a change from Nutcracker at Christmas. I hope that pays off. I'm also definitely pleased about Jane Eyre as I've not seen that before. It looks like an interesting and well chosen range of works.
  18. Yes the Hippodrome isn't that cheap. I'm towards the back of the circle for Sleeping Beauty and the ticket was £32. I would expect similar for La Fille. Still I enjoy the experience and think it's worth what I pay.
  19. Just to say I usually sit towards the back of the circle because I am parsimonious by nature and don't like spending a lot of money on tickets when I have to travel. I've never had a problem with the view. The rake is ok and while you can't see the faces as well as you can further forward, it's never been a bad view.
  20. Birmingham is quite a fun place to visit and stay. I wouldn't agree the area around the Hippodrome is awful, I mean it's the edge of Chinatown and there are some quite good Chinese restaurants. Hippodrome is quite a pleasant theatre. I usually sit further back and the view is always decent. I've stayed at the Holiday Inn, the Radisson and the New Street Station Premier Inn (which is about 12 minutes walk) depending on prices. All are fine. Last time I stayed at the Premier Inn and went to Tim Hortons for breakfast because I think their maple pancakes are fun. For Sleeping Beauty I'm doing that again because it pleased me and meant I could get my train back easily.
  21. Hoping for Tzu-Chao or Matthias for Colas. I'll book the date I can do best (probably 28 Sept) and see who I wind up with.
  22. Delighted they're bringing back Fille and definitely worth a trip to Birmingham. I think the audience will be full of very happy people. I think it was Matthias Dingman last time I saw it who was just lovely. I will also miss Brandon though.
  23. Yeah that's the one I'd booked as well. I always book the date I can do and take pot luck on dancers. So I am disappointed I'll miss the chance to see Cesar in this role as he's not someone I've seen before. Still I'm sure Max will do very well indeed.
  24. I get their advert every time I watch something on Youtube (or so it feels). It doesn't matter how often I say I don't want to see this advert. It's absolutely infuriating.
