  2. And dry ice unfortunately condenses on the stage flooring. I don’t know the mechanics of how they avoid that … must be a specific heat needed to ‘dry’ it?
  3. @Balletbloke you can use the @ function to tag a person you wish to reply to, instead of using the quote function. Start typing their forum name after the @
  4. Is the class available online? Sometime they are 🤔
  5. A review of Iana in RB Swan Lake in 2015 (previous version) https://theoperatunist.wordpress.com/2015/03/21/swan-lake-salenko-mcrae-gartside-gruzin-march-21st-2015-matinee/ and an ROH video
  6. According to the ROH collections database, Iana partnered Steven McRae 29 (!) times from October 2013 through April 2017 … in Don Q, R&J, Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Two Pigeons, Giselle, Jewels, Tchai pdd and Swan Lake https://www.rohcollections.org.uk/SearchResults.aspx?searchtype=performance&page=0&person=Salenko
  7. I’m told that the Radio Times posts a picture of Misty Copeland and Sergei Polunin to advertise ‘The Nutcracker and The Four Realms’ movie … BBC1 at 5.25pm on Christmas Eve I recall that the choreographer for this movie was Liam Scarlett. According to imdb Max Westwell, Harris Bell, Julia Conway, Kristen McGarrity and Katharina Nikelski are also in this movie .. amongst other dancers.
  8. I am thrilled that Iana Salenko has been brought in to partner Gabriele Frola … he really deserves someone of her elite calibre. I have rushed to buy tickets for her first show. It is a coup for ENB to secure her. You may remember that Iana was a regular guest at RB to partner Steven McRae back when there were not suitable small dancers for him. She has the most incredibly secure and beautiful technique .. her adagio and her fouettés are a thing of wonder. And she is always the star choice for the final piece at the annual Ballet Icons gala. (Often partnered by Daniel Simkin). In the Nureyev gala she performed the Bayadere pdd (partnered by Xander Parish) with extraordinary poise and controlled movement which bode well for an exquisite Odette. She is Steven McRae’s regular partner on the annual outdoor summer galas ‘Verdensballetten’ that he arranges in Denmark. Here they are rehearsing for summer 2022 … https://www.instagram.com/reel/CfEdM-KlaBs/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y= She is a whole level above any other ballerina at ENB. I hope you can still get tickets. Do anything to get one! You will regret it if you miss out on seeing her in the UK.
  9. I too wish the grandparents were played by mature / retired dancers or else that part changed.
  10. I take it as a quick cost cutting exercise by the new management team. Maybe the new AD has his own ideas for something to encourage emerging dancers, which can’t be implemented until he is fully on board.
  11. Many highly talented dancers do not participate … - travel costs - they are at elite schools already (it’s rare to see students from RB, Paris, Dutch, La Scala schools participating) - they get selected out in pre-selection. It’s subjective choice and inevitable. I’d like to believe there is no money changing hands to influence selection processes.
  12. The cost of travel alone is prohibitive. I remember (many moons ago) helping with fundraising for 3 candidates and chaperones to travel from Cape Town.
  13. Firstly , the gala is new and it is of professional dancers only. It is separate to the competition. It includes many principals from elite companies including from the UK. I should think balletcoforum members who aren’t following the ‘Doing Dance’ thread would be interested to discuss the dancers and programme. Too many to list again here .. please read the original post. Secondly, the jury are also of interest to non-dancing forum members as it included the director of the RB School Christopher Powney, RB choreographer Christopher Wheeldon plus former RB principal Tetsuya Kumakawa. And many other luminaries of professional ballet.
  14. @Jan McNultyCould you unlock the other thread please ?
  15. I did think the announcement of this gala which is a first for the PdL did deserve its own thread. As other galas do.

  19. Returning to the cinema performance, I was a bit disappointed with William Bracewell’s Prince (I probably had my expectations unrealistically ramped up by Darcey’s glowing intro). He couldn’t get fully round on any of the double saut de basques. Everything looks too staged and careful and unspontaneous for me. Fumi sparkled throughout with a fun twinkle in her eyes. She has a super technique and it’s been a long time since I’ve seen a RB ballerina with a controlled and high développé à la seconde like she has 👏👏👏 (when she runs to her partner and has her back to the audience). Fabulous supported spiralling legs from Joonhyuk Jun in the Chinese dance. I notice Taisuke Nakao’s back wasn’t as low which may have restricted the height of his spirals.
  20. I wonder if there is any additional cost to streaming a ballet that has previously been shown in the cinema?
