  1. I would 'like' this post but it might give the wrong impression! Sounds absolutely awful, Anne.
  2. Well the basic listings are in the Radio Times (as I see now - I've never looked before since I haven't had Sky).
  3. I think that's not just disappointing, it's dreadful. On the other hand, I emailed the Friends of the ROH the other day about my membership including confirming that I was happy to renew this month, and within a few hours I received a very nice email back thanking me for my support.
  4. Thank you for the detailed review and photo, Mandy! Sounds wonderful.
  5. I hope the Mariinsky dancers who were hospitalised have recovered? I wonder what further measures are being taken to protect the dancers this time round, since the last reopening had serious consequences.
  6. It is a minefield. There are parallels with writers/copyright, except that I suppose ballets are so much more collaborative than books/novels. (I know books have to be edited/published/promoted, but a ballet is actually created on and with other people.) A mediocre work can look much better if brilliantly danced and with ample resources of various kinds; but then again, poor collaborators can mar what would otherwise have been a successful work. So I suppose it's a question of the extent to which a choreographer would be willing to sign away their rights/future income in respect of the work in return for an initial payment. I also wonder if dancers necessarily want to be filmed when dancing in potentially less than ideal circumstances (and at the moment, after a very long break from performing).
  7. As far as I am concerned there is no criticism at all of you, Bruce - indeed it's very good of you to post the reports. I just find The Stage's approach pretty irritating at the moment, as if no other organisation is struggling with the current issues and difficulties.
  8. But (like it or not) that's precisely and inevitably what many board appointments in such organisations are for - to bring in and/or attract significant amounts of money.
  9. I also empathize with you, glowlight. I have an airway condition so I moreorless isolated when lockdown started, and even as things relaxed I was told by my doctors to be meticulous about following the guidance/rules. Which still makes it difficult to do a lot of things, and leaves me wondering why a lot of people seem to feel able to socialise quite freely. I live on my own, so if I go to a café or restaurant with anyone else (indoors) it would have to be at 2 metres distant, which is obviously both unrealistic and undesirable. I have gone to sit in my sister's garden a couple of times now (12 minutes on a weekday train which was very empty), and my brother came and had a cup of tea with me since it's moreorless possible to keep 2 metres apart in my sitting room. I also went to a masked and socially distanced funeral of an old friend last week (via a very empty tube train). But I'm finding it hard to justify doing things that aren't essential and I'm aware that others are doing so much more, including members of my family. I've found the last few months much more stressful than lockdown itself!
  10. As far as I know you can't do that. Since the messages are chronological that at least keeps them in order. But texting isn't exactly flexible!
  11. I've just looked at my texts, and it seems that if the person is in my contacts, I can click on the three dots at the top, select Delete and then choose the messages I want to delete. If it's someone not in my contacts, it just says DELETE at the top, but if you click on that you still get the option to choose which to delete.
  12. I'm very glad the dancers are getting a chance to dance and I hope this raises a lot of money,. But, if it's possible to stage something like this whilst still abiding by the current restrictions then it should presumably also be possible to stage something along these lines but that is more accessible to the general public (if they feel able to go) in terms of both location and cost. So I hope that will be the next step.

    As a non-vegetarian I generally just wish they'd invited me! 😄
  14. Even if it had to include Utilita, couldn't it have retained Birmingham? (I've no idea who or what Utilita is, but it has unfortunate connotations of useful as opposed to entertaining, attractive, enticing etc.).
  15. Thank you SO much, Bruce! This is brilliant - both witty and moving, and the music is wonderful and Julie Andrews is terrific! A real gem.
  16. Sounds tempting! But unfortunately it says 'This video is private'.
  17. Good question. If this is being performed in a location that encourages people to crowd together to watch it, with no advice or requirement for social distancing, it shouldn't be being performed. (If social distancing could just be ignored whenever people felt like it, all our theatres could come back right now!!).
  18. In case of interest: Harmony Lane, a 1954 musical comedy short (27 mins) is being shown on Talking Pictures (Freeview 81) on Sunday 19th July at 8.30pm; apparently it features "Swan Lake" by Svetlana Beriosova and David Paltenghi of the Sadler's Wells Ballet (as well as the Beverley Sisters, Dora Bryan and Max Bygraves and others).
  19. Yes - I realise it could be watched later (as could R&J) - but that implies a certain amount of planning/a more serious interest, whereas my hope would be that airing something on TV would attract casual passers-by, so to speak. Anyway I hope a lot of people will watch/watched both the programme and the ballet.
  20. I've loved watching the old matches/players especially Chris Evert and Evonne Goolagong. The one I'd really like to see is Ilie Nastase but I haven't seen anything of him - maybe he never made it far enough in tournament (can't remember now) to qualify for these programmes (or maybe I missed him - I haven't watched them all). Anyway I think Wimbledon and the BBC have done a great job in the absence of live tennis. And I find that although the game is so much faster and more powerful now, the old matches can still be just as thrilling and really absorbing. And I remember the players and their mannerisms so well even after all these years!
