Empty seats? Was it not full? Given many of the seats were presumably either free or greatly reduced in price then it seems odd if it wasn't full.

yes, definitely empty seats in the main part of the Amphi, and only a handful of occupied slips seats (upper and lower).  I can't really speak for the rest of the auditorium but I think I also spotted a few empty seats in the orchestra stalls

I don’t think it’s that, Candleque, and I’m all in favour of people expressing their appreciation which, I think, makes all of us feel good, but when, in the manner of the standard TV audience audience who, as we know, are told when to yell and clap, you get the same crescendo of whoops and screams for the unexceptional as for the exceptional, it does tend to diminish the impact of the exceptional, not to mention the effect that it may have on the dancers’ concentration.
My daughter is a natural whooper. She also suffers from misophonia, which she usually manages to control, but the level and frequency of the noise, often at wholly inappropriate times, was so bad that she almost had to get up and leave.

I agree with @Scheherezade - we sat a few seats apart in the Amphi and the disruption by filming, feet shuffling, people talking to their friends (across empty seats as they had roomily spread out), audience members coming and going as they pleased, drinking from crinkly plastic bottles...  all this added to the over-enthusiastic clapping and whooping did not make for a pleasant viewing.

I actually stayed with friends in stalls circle for the 3rd act, where at least the whooping was less

I thought I was clear. The groups from which tonight’s audience has been drawn were also given the opportunity to attend the poorly sold performances of Don Q and Anemoi/The Cellist so tonight was no longer the special ‘one off’ that it was intended to be.

This is not correct.  The poorly sold Anemoi were offered to staff and their families at a discounted price, not "given away" nor to the same group that was in attendance last night (unless of course they are coincidentally family of ROH staff)

  4. I am very pleased for the cinema goers to have enjoyed the evening, there must have been some very clever editing going on.  In the house we were a little underwhelmed (at least the regulars I spoke with).  The audience was clap-happy at every minor break in the music and even along with the music in parts.  Too much whooping and screaming with most claps.  Generally noisy and "unresty" with lots of filming attempts.  Very distracting.  But also, there were a rather unusual number of minor (and one larger) mishaps on stage going on.

Sadly I was a bit underwhelmed with the performance and have missed the chemistry between Kitri and Basilio that I have felt with other couples.

My favourites of the evening were Gamache, Espada and Kitri's friends.

  5. well, this is odd, cast list for tonight states Leo Dixon again as lead gypsy couple, same as in last Saturday's matinee.  I guess the cinema-published cast list is incorrect

admittedly, Valentino only told me a coupe of weeks ago that he hopes to be back for Nutcracker Prince and Hans-Peter, but reading the cinema cast sheet I had hoped he recovered earlier than anticipated.

So would I, I absolutely LOVE it. Sadly not seen on the main stage since 2012 so perhaps it has been ditched ? ENB have a lovely version which last had an outing in 2018, maybe the new director will revive it. Frola would be sensational as James - I can live in hope !

might La Sylphide (at least that production) have left the RB repertoire with Johan Kobborg's departure?

As a standee of many years' standing (sorry!), I find that ushers vary wildly in how much they enforce the rules.  Some of them don't mind if you slip into an empty seat as the lights go down, especially if they know you are a regular.  Some of them pounce as soon as you move.  I went to the Untitled 2023 general rehearsal a few months ago.  I was in SCS, and there were loads of empty seats in front of us.  When I tried to sit in one, I was barred by the usher.  I couldn't believe how intractable she was, but hey ho.  I usually don't bother with slipping into seats now as the view standing is unencumbered by someone's head right in front of me, which often happens!

Hahaha, I remember him.  It was the clipboard usher who then didn't even recognise RB dancers as they moved about the house and was almost chasing them and alerting another usher about the dancers' "trespassing".  The alerted usher enlightened clipboard usher about the "trespassers".  😆

Congratulations to Alessandria Ferri and I'm sure she will be excellent, being a dancer who has experienced the highs of hits and success as well as the lows of disappointment/rejection, injury etc, and has the experience of staging shows, leading festivals etc. I am a bit sad that this means she will be dancing a lot less, although I don't read German (help, @Sabine0308!) ....does it say she is retiring from dancing or will she do like Carlos Acosta (or Nureyev!) and still dance once or twice a year?

Hi @Emeralds The article doesn't mention whether Ms Ferri will or won't continue dancing (I am a native German speaker)

  9. Aren't the reduced ROH tickets similar to West End and Broadway Day Tickets that are sold on the day of the performance in order to fill the auditorium?  I have been lucky enough to snag some Broadway show tickets on the day of for much less than those patrons who booked their tickets weeks/months in advance to have their certainty of knowing they will attend the performance on the day they want to in the seats of their choosing.

Like most here I agree that ticket prices have shot up a bit too much recently, but I also understand that with reduced government funding theatres are struggling.  And I'd rather support the arts than be deprived of them if theatres have to close (or have to scrap live music, etc.)

I'm really sad that this thread has become so hateful and jealous.

I, too, would love to be able to see as many performances as I want to without having to dip into saving.  Yet, I also recognise how privileged we are in London to have such plethora of shows, and that we can book ballet/opera tickets knowing which cast we get.  NYCB for example only release their principal casts 2 weeks prior to performance by which time the lower price band ticket have typically been snatched up.

Caspar Lench is noticeably smaller than the other matadors in Don Q. Admittedly he is only in Act 3 as a matador, (in Act 1 he’s identifiable as a village boy and in Act 2 presumably a gypsy (?)) but if someone has gone to the trouble of making a matador costume then hopefully he’ll get more chance to dance in a later performance or run.
I can see him following the path of Liam Boswell or Marcelino Sambé as Drosselmeyers assistant, Clara’s partner, Chinese & Russian dances in Nutcracker then progressing to Hans Peter. Probably the Neopolitan dance in Swan Lake, Jester In Cinderella, Bluebird in Sleeping Beauty, Benvolio & Mercutio perhaps Romeo in R&J etc etc a whole treasure chest of roles await such a promising dancer.

adding to the wish list: Blue Boy in Les Patineurs, Bratfisch in Mayerling, Alaskan Rag in Elite Synchopations (with maybe Annette Buvoli?), Puck in The Dream
