Could @Bruce Wall or other members who have attended NYCB this year tell me if you can get casting by clicking on the NYCB website? I’m sure I used to be able to see it on the website (could have mistaken this for another US company’s website though!) the week before the performance but can’t find it now. No rush, but anyone who’s seen it, would be grateful if you can tell us. Thanks!

Hi @Emeralds - try this link: NYCB Fall 2023

  2. I will preclude that I have not watched Panorama (I don't own a TV or pay for TV license)

However, I can't see the relation between stopping watching ballet companies and ballet school teachers changing their behaviour.  Maybe the question should have been whether to financially stop supporting ballet schools?

I must say, that during my active ballet days I also experienced weigh-ins every Monday morning and being told to lose weight.  I certainly wasn't chubby, just athletic as opposed to scrawny like some of my fellow students.  Did that affect my relationship with food?  Absolutely.  Did that make me feel rubbish?  Of course.  Did that diminish my love for ballet?  Absolutely not.  It made me persevere and stubbornly chase my dream even harder.  I pushed through and graduated.  The thing that had me stop dancing were my knees that had given out on me during my graduating year.

My passion for ballet has remained high over the last three decades, albeit being a spectator rather than a dancer.

I have also been bullied in my day job that has no connection to dance or the arts, so I would say bullying needs to be addressed in general. But I won't be denying myself of the pleasure of watching ballet and supporting ballet companies by purchasing tickets, merchandise, etc.

I've held back from giving my views so far since I was clearly less enamoured with The Australian Ballet's offerings than most BCF members. But, on the basis of seeing Jewels and the Gala, I would certainly not rate them among the 'top five' although, of course, I wish the Company well on its journey towards that goal.

TBH, I didn't feel the love for TAB's Jewels either and it's usually a ballet I really enjoy (all three different parts for different reasons), hence I sold my other two tickets and only returned for the gala which I rather liked for the most part (not Watermark or Little Atlas).

I have questioned myself whether I was overly critical with TAB's Jewels or whether I just had an off-day last Thursday.  But, for me it was lacking either the punchy, speedy attack NYCB has or the grace and cheekiness the RB brings to it.  A friend of mine likened it to a school's performance and I think that hits the nail on the head, especially having just recently seen the RBS end of year performance.  It was executed well but for me it was missing pizzazz.

In Sunday's gala I particularly enjoyed I New Then and Everywhere We Go and also liked Harlequinade's and Don Q's excerpts a lot.  I would really like to see TAB more often, with ballets that the company feels really comfortable in, and hope we don't have to wait so long again to welcome them back to London.

Okay, now I'm really confused.  I thought tonight's (sorry, last night's) cast was scheduled to be pretty much the same as the first night - hence partly why I gave up my ticket.  Was I misreading the casting on the TAB website?

Hi Alison - did you use the date drop down on TAB website for the different dates’ casts? It’s not immediately obvious and always reverts to opening night’s cast when returning from looking at a dancer’s profile

I thought a couple of the soloists in Emeralds reappeared in Diamonds so it's nice to have that confirmed.

By the way, I'd be interested to hear from anyone going tonight if the running time manages to be anywhere near the 2h17 given on the cast sheet. Last night it finished over 20 minutes late.

I left the auditorium tonight at 22:02 during the Diamonds red run. So again, nowhere near the advertised 2:17 runtime
