We don’t often discuss make up. So here is a perhaps silly question. Was it me or did Katherina Nikelski have a light sheen of gold body paint last night? Perhaps it was just a heavier foundation base than this very light-skinned dancer normally uses and that caught golden lustre reflected off the magnificent palace walls, but in any case it looked very fetching and appropriately exotic for the character.
Ms Nikelski’s IG post about her Hungarian princess debut last night shows a close up but might have a bit of a filter on it

My highlights of last night:
- Lukas BB as von Rothbart. I thought he was even more evil in his human form than winged character, his slow and purposeful steps had such a powerful impact. A fantastic von Rothbart debut in my opinion.
- Sae Maeda's sister. I always love seeing Sae on stage and this season she'll dance both sister roles which shows how versatile she is.
- The princesses (Katharina Nikelski, Charlotte Tonkinson, Isabella Gasparini, Yu Hang)
- The Cygnet, who were so incredibly in sync last night. Having learned the cygnets in ballet class recently I am even more in awe of the RB ladies mastering the synchronicity and speed whilst dancing so tightly together.

I was not suggesting that the first night casting was misplaced in performance terms, just that it would be nice to be able to read (newspaper) reviews of other casts given Nunez & Muntagirov have been reviewed several times previously.
I agree. Which is why I am so pleased that this time round the RB's magnificent Yasmine Naghdi shall be seen around the world in the cinema relay.
And I believe that one will be saved for DVD release afterwards.

Did you also miss the strange silhouette of Odette on top of the rock before she was supposed to be spot lit, she looked like she was having a conversation with someone on the ground behind the rock
In the general rehearsal Mariko had also been visible on the pedestal before she was meant to be lit up and seen

I had absolutely no idea that one had to sign up for offers. How is one supposed to know that one should sign up? I created my account on the ROH website nearly 20 years ago! I've rummaged around in my account & changed some settings so it'll be interesting to see if any emails now arrive & I'm now wondering how much I've missed over the last 20 years, or however long it is they've had that option.
I have had the 'offers' option selected in my profile for a long time and haven't received those emails. I'd be interested to know if it works for you going forward.

@Suffolkgal - where is this offer, please? an email from ROH or something in some other app?

I've been missing Katharina Nikelski too, @art_enthusiast
She had taken a little break but is back in London now and back in the RB studios. I'm sure we'll see her back on stage soon.

🤣 I’d be one of those William fans too if my budget would only allow it! I’m more than half way there to be honest. The solution is a Bracewell/Muntagirov pairing - I don’t mind which ballet and I’m sure they have the talent to pull off anything - the big bonus being that they’d save me the money and FOMO on seeing (or not seeing) multiple casts.
Will Bracewell himself had mentioned in his interview with Julia Dixon and Brandon Lawrence on Open Barre Podcast that a male/male love story ballet is long overdue.
So, I think we’ve got one main protagonist already secured for @OnePigeon’s new piece.

I was just starting a topic on this too ☺️
Might that be the reason Alexander isn’t cast in SL etc?
Possibly his De Grieux on 8th March his farewell? 😢
Congratulations to Alexander but sad if that means he’s leaving RB

Moving this up before it falls off too far down the stream

Out of interest, how old is Baby Campbell? Perhaps they are choosing to take Shared Parental Leave which would explain a lack of Alex as Claire comes back???
Isla Campbell was born 13th September 2023

The website is playing up again for me....having a look at availability for the Pet Shop Boys it's saying I've reached my limit (I've not booked anything) When I open up an incognito tab and try to sign in I'm immediately on a 39 minute wait on the sofa page both on laptop and phone (ie two different makes of browser)
same for all of us
it's a shambles 😡
even if one gets further one is stuck on a white screen

controversial opinion I am sure:
I was rather underwhelmed and left the ROH very disappointed tonight. It all felt limp and was lacking chemistry between the leads. I liked the touches Nela put into her portrayal of Manon and her technique is still near-perfect but the male leads sadly couldn't match her, in my opinion.
I will be returning my ticket for Saturday evening.

on tonight's cast sheet:
This year marks the 25th anniversary of Roberto Bolle’s first appearance as a guest artist with The Royal Ballet, when he performed in The Nutcracker with Darcey Bussell.

Apparently they are getting rather less reliable in Germany and Switzerland too ☹️
German train drivers have just been on a six-day-long strike 😡 their Union leader is just as stubborn as the one in the UK. However, there's hope amongst the German population that strikes calm down a little when he retires later this year.

I hope someone got a picture of them in each others arms at the first curtain call. Mainly because I saw it through weepy eyes but also because I had to tank it for the train.
