  3. Wayne McGregor | Random Dance Atomos Friday 13 & Saturday 14 February Tickets: £12 - £32 Ticket Office: 0844 412 4300 or www.sadlerswells.com Atomos, the most recent full-length work by cutting-edge contemporary choreographer Wayne McGregor, returns to Sadler’s Wells on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 February 2015, following a rapturous reception at its world premiere in 2013. Atomos continues McGregor’s ongoing exploration of scientific ideas and principles. It is performed by the ten dancers from the award-winning Sadler’s Wells Resident Company Wayne McGregor | Random Dance in McGregor's unique style - sculptural, rigorous, jarring and hauntingly beautiful. Wayne McGregor’s dynamic style and ground-breaking collaborative approach across dance, film, music, visual art, technology and science has seen him create an exceptional body of work over the past 20 years. A Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist, McGregor is renowned for his physically testing choreography and highly innovative collaborations across dance, film, music, visual art, technology and science. This production brings together McGregor’s longtime collaborators, lighting designer Lucy Carter and filmmaker Ravi Deepres, along with costumes by Studio XO and a score by neoclassical ambient composers A Winged Victory For The Sullen, which will be performed live. The score for Atomos was released as the second album by A Winged Victory for the Sullen in October 2014, to rave reviews. McGregor has created new works for Paris Opera Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, New York City Ballet, Australian Ballet, English National Ballet, NDT1 and Rambert Dance Company among others. In addition to his role as Artistic Director of Wayne McGregor | Random Dance, he is also Resident Choreographer of The Royal Ballet (appointed 2006). His works are also in the repertories of the leading ballet companies in the world including the Bolshoi, Royal Danish Ballet, National Ballet of Canada, Boston Ballet and Joffrey Ballet. He has directed movement for theatre and film including Harry Potter And The Goblet of Fire, and has choreographed music videos including the Grammy-nominated Lotus Flower video for Radiohead, and Ingenue for Atoms for Peace. His other recent work includes Borderlands for San Francisco Ballet and Raven Girl for The Royal Ballet. A pop-up exhibition, Thinking with the Body - Mind and Movement in the work of Wayne McGregor | Random Dance, originally created at Wellcome Collection in 2013, will be on display in the foyer on performance days. “McGregor’s choreographic curiosity hasn’t lost its power to thrill” The Guardian A Sadler’s Wells co-production The Monument Trust supports co-productions and new commissions at Sadler's Wells Valentine’s Day performance in support of Random Spaces
  4. SB did Highland Fling. I obviously wasn't articulate enough I just meant that ENB could perhaps emulate SB in taking an MB production - Nutcracker in ENB's case.
  5. I saw this production in Liverpool and wasn't overly keen. I am not entirely sure that I agree with your idea Aileen that the company should get an extant production as a replacement - I've seen some really bland productions, at least one of them by an American choreographer. When I first started watching LFB they had a production by Ronald Hynd which I really loved and I also very much enjoyed Peter Schaufuss' production. In fact the Schaufuss snowflakes are still my favourite of any production I have seen! Or perhaps Ms Rojo could follow where Scottish Ballet has trodden and acquire a Matthew Bourne production!

  9. I suspect it will be Spring 2016 as David Bintley mentioned Swan Lake several times in respect of Autumn 2015 at the recent Friends' reception. David mentioned that during 2016 we will be seeing a lot of ballets based on Shakespeare - some old, some new, some unexpected!

  11. Northern Ballet's Christmas production this year is a revival of David Nixon's Peter Pan. This production is a real treat for children as the story is very easy to follow and moves along at a good pace. The set is absolutely brilliant (but bring along booster cushions for youngsters if you are in the front stalls as the stage is raised slightly to accommodate the revolving parts of the set), The costumes are super too and the music is tuneful and accessible. What I admire about this production is its production values and the 100% commitment that the dancers give to the roles, really bringing the characters to life. Yesterday afternoon was a very special performance indeed as it was Darren Goldsmith's valedictory performance. He is retiring after 21 years with Northern Ballet. Darren was dancing the duel role of Mr Darling/Captain Hook. Jeremy Curnier gave a perfectly judged performance in the eponymous role. He was able to bring out the mischievous Pan but also brought across how torn Peter was between is blossoming romance with Wendy and the chance to live in her family with his desire to remain forever young. His dancing was beautiful and he was a joy to watch. Antoinette Brooks Daw was a delight as Wendy, Hannah Bateman was caring and compassionate as Mrs Darling and the NeverBird. I'm not a huge fan of adults playing young children but the dancers of Northern Ballet through themselves into their roles with gusto and were very believable. Matthew Broadbent particularly showed a wonderful sense of comedic timing. The pirates too were suitably piratical. Darren himself was a tour de force as Hook and gave a brilliant performance with just the right amount of braggadocio and terror when he could hear the crocodile's ticking. It was a very enjoyable and, for those of us who had gone to celebrate Darren's career, highly emotional performance. All the dancers rose to the occasion and gave him a memorable send off. At the curtain call David Nixon gave a moving speech thanking Darren for giving his career to Northern Ballet and telling us of the highs and lows. Very best wishes to Darren for the future.
  12. A Sadler’s Wells co-commission Sally Marie & John Ross Questions and Dancers The Place, Wednesday 4 February, 1pm (Schools show with limited tickets available for general sale) Lilian Baylis Studio, Saturday 7 February, 2.30pm & 7pm Questions and Dancers is a double bill of new works for young people, bringing together new dance talent:Sally Marie, nominated for the Critics Circle national Dance Award for new talent, and John Ross, winner of the New Adventures Choreographer Award. Marie and Ross each create an original short dance piece with final year students from London Contemporary Dance School (LCDS), inviting inquisitive young minds to share their feedback and questions after the show. Sally Marie presents I am 8, a world in which children’s personal stories and dancers’ lives blend together in a tale of discovery, spanning what it is like to be 8 years old to being 21. In There, There Stranger by John Ross, uncertainty arises in a labyrinth where anything is possible. Untangling different paths, the dancers go on a physical quest moving through darkness and light, from the scary to the absurd. The Questions and Dancers project entailed the creative teams testing their ideas on their target audiences, which was done with the collaboration of Netley Primary, Highgate Primary and Torriano Junior School. Marie and Ross carried out workshops in October and November 2014, with the final sessions taking place in January 2015. Peter Laycock, Project Officer Creative Teaching & Learning at The Place said about the project, “Questions and Dancers creates exciting new work for young audiences but the sharing of knowledge and learning is at the heart of it: the artists can research and develop their ideas with young people who, in turn, gain insight into the artistic process, learning about researching, creating, editing and refining.” Both Marie and Ross’ works are commissioned thanks to The Choreography for Children Award 2014 produced by Sadler’s Wells, Company of Angels, The Place and London Contemporary Dance School in partnership with MOKO Dance. 14. I was at the 2 performances on 2nd December. For me, this really is the grandad of all productions and I just absolutely love it. The first performance I was was a matinee in the first season 90/91 (if I had to take a guess I would say 2nd January 1991) and I have never forgotten the audience reaction. I could never quite understand why we were all cheering a set change (specifically when the tree grows (and blummin' 'eck it grows!) and the fireplace grows (rotates) to reveal King Rat) but every time I see this production I am still awestruck by that transformation. The set and costumes for the party scene in Act 1 exude richness and warmth. By making the children's Mum an ex-dancer there is a logical reason for all the dancing in Act 1 (somewhat more dancing than I have seen in various other productions over the years). And then to the transformation, the war with the rats, and the start of the journey through the snow. I just adore the duet for Clara and the Nutcracker Prince, I find it very beautiful and am so carried away with it that I am always surprised when I realise the tree and fireplace have disappeared and the dancers have arrived in the land of snow! With enormous flowers and fans hanging down the stage itself looks huge and provides plenty of space for the dancers in the variations in Act 2. I find all the variations pleasant but I always particularly enjoy the Russian and the Mirlitons. The gpdd is sublime. In the afternoon Laura Purkiss was Clara with Tyrone Singleton as her Nutcracker Prince and Celine Gittens as Sugar Plum. Laura was a total delight as Clara - she just inhabited the role. If anyone was born to dance a Prince it is Tyrone and he was magnificent. Celine was just divine as Sugar Plum (well actually she is divine in everything she does - surely she must be promoted to principal soon). I like the way all the dancers stay in role as parents, friends and dance-partners during the party scene. Alys Shee stood out as the exasperated Mum trying to control her overly exuberant children and she then went on to give a sultry performance in the Arabian. The evening saw Arancha Baselga as Clara with Yasuo Atsuji as the Nutcracker Prince and a sublime Yvette Knight as Sugar Plum. Rory Mackay was truly wonderful as Drosselmeyer. All in all, 2 terrific performances of a great Nutcracker.

  19. SCOTTISH BALLET UNVEILS AN INSPIRED 2015/16 PROGRAMME Scottish Ballet is delighted to announce its ambitious plans for 2015/16. Building on an incredibly prolific two years of choreographic creativity which has seen 9 new works staged by the company, and a further 12 added to the repertoire. Scottish Ballet will continue to expand its repertoire by presenting three world premieres, a European premiere and a Scottish Ballet premiere during its 2015/16 season. “Commissioning and introducing new work to Scottish Ballet has been central to my directorship and in the last two years we've introduced 21 new ballets into the repertoire including nine world premieres. Nothing is more exciting for our dancers or the audience, and I'm pleased to say that our next season continues the pace with five new works entering the company’s repertoire, including three world premieres.” - Christopher Hampson, Artistic Director 3 World Premieres SWAN LAKE Choreography David Dawson Music Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Set Design John Otto Costume Design Yumiko Takeshima Lighting Design Bert Dalhuysen Touring to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Inverness, Newcastle Scottish Ballet commissions award-winning, international choreographer, David Dawson, to create a new Swan Lake. David Dawson’s work is visceral, daring and always pushes dancers to their limits. Scottish Ballet’s Artistic Director, Christopher Hampson comments, “David always looks to push the boundaries of classical ballet, and I know that his production of an iconic story will be a thoughtful, fresh and very bold addition to our repertoire." David was recently appointed Associate Artist of Dutch National Ballet (effective from January 1st 2015). His work challenges and extends the realms of classical technique and his brave stagings have made him a choreographer in demand across the globe. Scheduled to have its world premiere in April 2016, this new commission will ensure that a new generation will be engrossed by the timeless story of Swan Lake in a style and choreographic language relevant to the 21st century. DANCE INTERNATIONAL GLASGOW FESTIVAL In 2015 Scottish Ballet will premiere a new work by choreographer Marc Brew. We will be partnering with Indepen-dance, a company that produces work for artists with diverse abilities and follows on from a successful choreographic development workshop in June 2014 at Scottish Ballet. Our companies will come together, working with Marc Brew, to create a world premiere to kick off the inaugural Dance International Glasgow Festival. This will be paired with Hans van Manen’s 5 Tangos, last performed by Scottish Ballet in autumn 2012. “Scottish Ballet and Indepen-dance have found a synergy between our dancers and we look forward to producing a work to inspire and provoke thought around dance and diversity.” - Christopher Hampson, Artistic Director ELSA CANASTA & ‘NEW WORK’ Choreography Javier de Frutos Music Cole Porter Set and Costume Design Jean-Marc Puissant Touring to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Inverness Javier de Frutos Elsa Canasta The staging of Elsa Canasta will be a Scottish Ballet premiere from renowned choreographer Javier de Frutos. Elsa Canasta is a dark, funny and sexy evocation of the music of Cole Porter, set to his ballet score Within the Quota and a medley of his songs. Artistic Director, Christopher Hampson says, “After spending time observing the Company, Javier plans to re-stage his work with specific, and surprising, changes in mind to ensure that this version of Elsa Canasta is unique to Scottish Ballet.” Bryan Arias New Work This world premiere with Scottish Ballet will mark the first time that Bryan Arias has presented work within the UK. Winner of the 6th Copenhagen International Choreography Competition in 2013, Bryan Arias will be creating a new work that showcases his unique blend of dance styles. “Bryan is of particular interest to Scottish Ballet as he is just at the start of an exciting trajectory that springboards from some of the most innovative dance making of today.” - Christopher Hampson, Artistic Director European Premiere Cinderella Choreography Christopher Hampson Music Sergei Prokofiev Design Tracy Grant Lord Touring to Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Inverness, Newcastle, Belfast Next winter Scottish Ballet will present the European premiere of Christopher Hampson’s Cinderella, originally created for the Royal New Zealand Ballet in 2007. In her grief, the young Cinderella plants a rose at her mother’s graveside. When her father remarries, the future seems bleaker than ever. Her wicked stepmother is intent on pushing aside kind and beautiful Cinderella in favour of her two nasty step-sisters. The course of true love never did run smooth but just like the rose Cinderella planted at her mother’s graveside, romance blossoms when she finally does meet her prince. Acclaimed New Zealand designer Tracy Grant Lord’s luxurious costumes and extravagant sets create a glittering fantasy world peopled with characters that are touching, funny and real. Dazzling against the light and dark of Prokofiev’s powerful score, this ravishing interpretation of the timeless rags-to-riches romance is everything you could wish for at Christmas, and more. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ INTERNATIONAL TOURING Announcing extensive UK and international touring plans, Chief Executive/Executive Producer Cindy Sughrue said: “Over the past two years, Scottish Ballet has produced an incredibly dynamic programme, including more new work than any other dance company in the UK. We have toured to the USA, to Hong Kong and to Russia including sell-out performances at the prestigious Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg. In the coming months, Scottish Ballet will tour extensively across the UK, and we will also travel to China and Japan, and back to the USA where we will undertake a four-week, six-city tour culminating in our debut at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington DC. A key focus for Scottish Ballet is showcasing our award-winning productions across the world and allowing us to fly the flag culturally for Scotland and for the rest of the UK.” ROMEO & JULIET (CHINA/JAPAN TOURS) Choreography Krzysztof Pastor Music Sergei Prokofiev Design Tatyana van Walsum Dramaturgy Willem Bruls Lighting Design Bert Dalhuysen Touring to China and Japan Scottish Ballet takes this classic production overseas to China and Japan in winter 2015.
