Jan McNulty
Ismene Brown has also reported this news on her blog: http://ismeneb.com/Blog/Entries/2013/10/28_Tsiskaridze%2C_Lopatkina_appointed_to_head_Russias_top_ballet_school.html
LinMM
I wonder if this appointment is wise given the recent current circumstances surrounding Mr. Tsiskaridze . Obviously have no idea about his actual talents for this role......he could be very good on this score but perhaps just at this point? Are they desperate for a new director right now? Have no probs with Lopatkina. I'm sure she will be wonderful.
Ann Williams
But Tsiskaridze sounds as if he could be a nightmare to work with, so Lopatkina's job might be no picnic, I wish her the best of luck anyway.
mart
Surprising choice as he was not trained in the Vaganova method ,perhaps it will be an administrative post(hence his recent law studies) ,.
Tony Newcombe
Where will this leave the great Altynai Asylmuratova
Jan McNulty
I wondered exactly the same thing Tony. Given that a number of dancers of huge repute have left the Mariinsky one wonders if the issue is with the school or the company and if this is a knee jerk reaction. PetitDi
Asylmuratova, and her husband Zaklinsky who also teaches at the school. I've just read that the outgoing director of the school will become deputy director of the Mikhailovsky Theatre. What a complicated web...
capybara
I had no idea that central government in Russia remained the puppeteer in these respects. But, then, the West is not always a model of transparency where such appointments are concerned.
Ian Macmillan
Ms Asylmuratova's future is unclear, it seems. Ian Macmillan
Yet more from Ismene Brown in translation - this time it's a blogger who appears to have an inside track on much of what's been afoot for about a year or so, it seems, and all independently of the Filin attack: http://ismeneb.com/Blog/Entries/2013/10/29_Blogger__Cherchez_la_femme_where_Tsiskaridze_is_concerned.html A full-length narrative ballet may be made from all of this one day!
MAB
Surprising choice as he was not trained in the Vaganova method ,perhaps it will be an administrative post(hence his recent law studies) ,. Tsiskaridze was the pupil of Marina Semenova, who in turn was the favourite pupil of Vaganova. He has danced extensively with the Kirov over a period of time dancing in roles ranging from the Vikharev reproductions to William Forsythe, so he has greater ties to the company than his detractors would like us to believe. LinMM
Yes have just discovered this from reading all the info put out on the Ballet links thread!! So thanks for those. Apparently he has danced with Lopatkina on a number of occasions and seems to rather admire her. When asked how they would share the power he implied they would be "indivisible" So this could bode well. However when you read HOW it was all done not such a good story. So hardly a good beginning. It seems as if the current director of the Vaganova Academy was not so much wanting to leave right now but was sort of more or less asked to leave. The reasons all seem a bit complex and maybe there are some financial issues going on we don't really know about yet. But the manner of the change doesn't seem to have been that well thought through. I hope this isn't just a case of who knows whom though.

The mind boggles!
LinMM
This morning Diana Vishneva one of the main Principals of the Maryinski and Vaganova School trained (and one of my favourite dancers) has put out a statement about the current situation which just appeared on my Facebook page and it is not seemingly favourable with the recent appointment. The outgoing Director was definitely forced to go. She goes further in apart from lamenting the above and lack of consultation etc she fears (but hopes not) that this could be the end of the "great Vaganova school" itself.
MAB
Isn't that a bit melodramatic? The Kirov has been in decline for years now, a lot is down to weird casting decisions holding dancers back but how much is due to a low standard of Vaganova graduates? I'm no fan of Kirov contortionists, if the rot has set in then perhaps a change at the top is overdue.
LinMM
Well it could be an intense emotional response. However the "contortionists" out there are not confined to the "Kirov" these days!
LinMM
Who is responsible for casting anyway.....isn't it the Artistic Director? Isn't this the apparently much loved Altynai Asylmuratova?
capybara
We seem to be in danger of confusing the Vaganova Academy and Mariinsky Company here. Yuri Fateev is in charge of the Company under the overall Direction of Gergeiev.
LinMM
Yes sorry. Asylmuratova probably doesn't have much to say about the actual casting for the Maryinski itself then. Though you would think she has some influence with the management at the main Theatre as she knows the students well presumably. But perhaps they don't listen!! If MAB is right perhaps they should....as she seems well respected at the Vaganova Academy anyway.
Longtimeago
Opinion has been seen online that Asylmuratova had favourites and not-favourites amongs graduates and this had impact on their standing with Fateyev. No physical characteristics pattern was given, so it must have been personal.
betterankles
Much doubt that Assylmuratova had any say on any casting once any graduate was engaged by Maryinski Theatre
Buddy
According to Gazeta.ru Altynai Asylmuratova's contract as Artistic Director of the Vaganova Academy has been "extended in full." "The Ministry of Culture confirmed that the agreement with Asylmuratova was extended in full, it is the artistic director and provost at the Vaganova Academy." (Google translation). http://www.gazeta.ru/culture/news/2013/ ... 3445.shtml Google Translate: http://translate.google.com/#ru/en/ (thanks to kbarber at Ballet Alert for posting this) Added comment: Further discussion at Ballet Alert questions how long this will last. Buddy
Catherine Pawlick at Critical Dance who is in St. Petersburg and speaks fluent russian just posted: "It's actually technically incorrect. It was not extended in full but only until Dec. 31 this year. The same as all the other pro-rector positions. "Lenta.ru just now has a similar article out as well."
