  1. Is that all it is? The coli seems so much bigger than the ROH. I don't know whether I would prefer to have fewer dance opportunities at the RB but be guaranteed an almost full house, or dance loads with the ENB but have a house with loads of empty seats. It must be so dispiriting, particularly when it seems that they are dancing their hearts out and putting on a great show.
  2. I have no idea whether it is true, but I kind of hope it is. It would be good if the RB and ENB offered something different, had different niches.
  3. Also, Cuthbertson is cast as Hermione, Lamb as Perdita, Yanowsky as Paulina, Watson as Leontes, McRae as Florizel and Bonelli as Polixenes. Nunez, Soares and Morera are 2nd cast for Hermione, Leontes and Paulina respectively. Did this play for my English Lit GCSE and it's not Shakespeare's most interesting, so hopefully Wheeldon can make something out of it.

  5. Good advice Meunier. I'd be surprised if most dancers put much stock in these reviews nowadays. Most have twitter accounts and i'm sure they get positive and negative tweets sent to them in equal measure, so they probably learn quickly not to pay too much attention. Regarding crisp, i've skimmed through some of these interviews and reviews people have posted and he just strikes me as a very, very old man. Elderly people do sometimes get a bit set in their ways and nostalgic about the past. He reminds me of my grandmother a bit actually.
  6. That's not saying much. The Guardian (and Independent) are dying a slow death. The Guardian will survive if it can generate revenue from its comment section, but I don't think anyone knows how to do that, though Murdoch seems to think paid subscriptions are working well for his titles (in my opinion that's a slightly optimistic interpretation of what's happening).
  7. All relative. Up 5% year on year and your circulation is still only 629,000?
  8. Ha ha. Does mijosh's post above re: giselle mean Kish is still injured and Bonelli is replacing him? Sorry if I have missed this elsewhere.
  9. Probably not an option the FT would like. They are struggling to get people to read their paper as it is.
  10. Yes, but I wonder why people speculate on casting. It is always going to be a combination of Nunez, Cuthbertson, Lamb, Bonelli, McRae, Watson. Just like you could bet your house on any new McGregor working having Hamilton, Lamb, Cuthbertson, McRae, Underwood, Watson.
  11. He certainly doesn't do a huge amount to challenge ballets elitist image
  12. There's no need to be rude to people just because they have a difference of opinion
  13. I do think it's amazing how Balanchine was able to capture the essence of each jewel in the choreography. In my opinion, emeralds are quite ethereal and give off a really tranquil colour, rubies are gaudy and tacky and diamonds are beautiful and classic, and I think he caught that very well.
  14. Just another note, I was sitting really close to the stage last night and it was obvious Rupert wasn't well. He looked like crap and you could hear him coughing a couple of times when he went off stage. Surprised he danced so well.
  15. I gave Jewels another shot tonight, and I enjoyed it more than I did last time. Emeralds still doesn't do anything for me, but I thought Marquez was lovely, though not as light and floaty as BSB. Watson was ok, but i'm not really sure why he is cast in this as it really isn't his strength. I was disappointed that Campbell was injured, but Dawid T is always fund to watch. I just find the choreography in Emeralds so dull. Rubies was more fun this time around. Osipova and McRae were great, and I like Hamilton. They all seemed to get the tacky, camp element of it tonight. Diamonds is my favourite of the piece. Beautifully danced by Lauren and Rupert, and the whole corps were on form. It really is very beautiful. I would love to see Nunez dancing the Yanowsky/ Hamilton part in Rubies, and i'd love to see Lamb do Diamonds. Think she'd be perfect for it, especially with Rupert. I wish that when a ballet has such comparatively short acts they wouldn't make the intervals so long.
  16. I would assume either the Lamb or Morera casts, as they have never danced it before
  17. Thanks for the responses. Would have liked to seen them, their chemistry sounds pretty intense. I wonder if the rumours about them having an offstage relationship are true? I know Nureyev preferred men, but when you work so closely with someone, in such a physically and emotionally intimate way, for such a long time,..........
  18. Just how famous was Fonteyn in her prime? It always makes me laugh when people refer to today's ballet dancers as 'stars' because, to be honest, I doubt any of them are ever recognised when they go out (writing from a UK perspective) but was she somebody who transcended ballet, who would have attracted crowds when she went out, paparazzi etc?
  19. Has to be the RB's Mayerling. Not sure if I could pick out a particular cast as they were all stunning, but probably the Pennefather and Soares casts. Hamilton was probably one of the performers of the year for me, as she seemed to be in everything I saw, and she was dazzling in pretty much everything.
