  1. I think the pronunciation of 'pavlova' is probably very different from the correct pronunciation of 'Pavlova' now, so people probably don't associate it as being a Russian surname. In the UK at least the emphasis seems to be on 'pav'.
  2. I imagine they will follow foreign office advice. Has a schedule/ casting been announced for this tour?
  3. Of the current ballerinas, i'd put Nunez and Lamb above Rojo and Osipova. Don't know enough about the retired dancers mentioned.
  4. Yeah I meant just generally. Pennefather, Kish, Crawford, Cojocaru, Bonelli- they have all struggled with injury in the last few years and are all, I believe, in their early to mid thirties. Pennefather has only been out for a few weeks and missed a couple of Giselle's and a few Beauty's, which is probably not a huge deal for him in the grand scheme of things, as he's done these roles before. I think Kish is the bigger disappointment as, even though he's been with the RB for 4 years, he hasn't really established himself yet, in my opinion, and he's missed some huge roles this season. Am I right in thinking that the only full length Macmillan he's done since arriving is one run of Manon? Wasn't Bussell also chronically injury prone? Maybe it's a British thing. Our bodies aren't cut out for anything strenuous.......
  5. Yeah it must be tough. I guess when you hit your thirties and your body starts breaking down you must start thinking about chucking it in and doing something easier.
  6. Christ that must be frustrating. He is so injury prone.
  7. That's a bit weird. Perhaps Cuthbertson is injured as well? Agree with James that is is odd that Pennefather would be replacing Kish when both are injured. But then don't they have their mid season break soon? Maybe there just isn't time to rehearse with someone else if they are all on holiday.
  8. Slightly off topic, but is the royal box the box nearest to the stage on the grand tier level, on the right side of the auditorium? On the floor plan I have of the ROH it doesn't identify it, and i've always wondered.
  9. It will take time to settle in, and when you are new, the critics will pounce on even the slightest mistake. I didn't notice him make any technical mistakes, though i'm not an expert in that area. He maybe does have to work on stopping grinning and keeping his mouth wide open, which sometimes looked a bit strange.
  10. You're a completely right. I dislike SB because I have a short attention span and I am from a different social milieu. I've always thought one of the reasons I love Manon and Mayerling so much is because they are so short and easy to follow.
  11. Interesting comments. People might be interested in this article about children and their behaviour in museums. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/museums/10644502/Should-children-be-banned-from-museums.html
  12. Walked past the stage door yesterday on my way to pick up my SB ticket and there were a couple of guys in tights and full stage makeup outside smoking. Looked pretty funny.
  13. Golding also replacing Pennefather for February 27th show
  14. Not sure if the ENB/ BRB and NB would be too happy about that
  15. Must have been fun. I found a clip of the event which I assumed would show the dancers but the camera barely left Princess Diana, which was pretty typical of events in the 80's and 90's I guess.
  16. I think you are right in that, if action is to be taken, it must be taken by the RB collectively, and not be left to individual dancers to make a stand. It isn't fair to put them in that position, just as I don't think it has been fair to put pressure on individual athletes in Sochi.
  17. Old article about a Fonteyn gala at the ROH. Would be funny to see Nureyev as Paris. http://www.nytimes.com/1990/05/31/arts/fonteyn-is-honored-by-the-royal-ballet.html
  18. Will see what they say. I wouldn't hold it against them if they didn't say anything though, as these things are tricky and people will find their own way of doing things. I don't personally agree with the academic boycott of Israel as it often hurts researchers who have nothing to do with the actions of the Israeli government.
  19. But where do you draw the line? I disagree with a certain government policy in Canada for example, so should I boycott Canada? I don't like much of what the US government does, but I watch US films. Does that make me a hypocrite? It's difficult, but I think sometimes boycotts just hurt the little people who often have nothing to do with the issue. If you are a huge fan of the Bloshoi and were really looking forward to seeing them perform here, it would be a little frustrating if they announced they were boycotting the UK because of our government's foreign policy decisions. The UK government wouldn't care and the only people that would really notice would be ballet fans (I could be wrong though). Mara Galeazzi, for example, has danced lots of charity galas in parts of Africa where it is illegal to be gay and people are murdered for it. Should she have boycotted these countries, or is it ok because she was doing charity work for children? It's a very complicated issue.
  20. It's a difficult one. Do boycotts work generally? I'm inclined to believe they have an effect, but I believe that effect can be overstated. It must be worrying for dancers who are gay, though I believe they would be completely safe going there. I also do understand the people who are saying that art/ sport/ whatever should remain separate from politics, so it's debatable whether some sort of statement would be appropriate. Sorry, haven't really contributed much to the discussion, but i'm a bit torn about these things myself. I traveled to Burma about 10 years ago when I was in Thailand, at the time when there were loud calls for an international boycott of the country on human rights grounds, but I figured I was traveling independently, and perhaps by going there and supporting tourism and local operators I would maybe be helping them to make money. Difficult though.
  21. Really? wow. While it's annoying when dancers you like pull out with injury, i'm sort of glad that that attitude doesn't prevail so much anymore. It can't have done their bodies much good.
