With all the talk of injuries and cancelled performances at the moment, I wonder what happened when either Nureyev or Fonteyn were injured. Did they both pull out or did they get a replacement partner? If so, that must have been difficult, standing in for Nureyev when everyone had paid to see him and Fonteyn.

This might not be the right topic for it, but does anyone know if Helen Crawford is due back soon? Always like her and I can't remember the last time I saw her in something.- 159 replies

The Royal Ballet, Giselle 2014
chrischris replied to capybara's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
There have been clips on youtube of Marianela Nunez's act 2 from 2011 for a while, but the Royal Ballet have released a clip of her mad scene from act 1 (though it cuts out towards the end, weirdly). Really wish I had got to see her, but unfortunately couldn't make any of her performances. Even in this brief clip she is so effective. Really wish Pennefather hadn't been injured either, as would have liked to see what he would have made of the role. He was quite muted in the 2011 version, from the clips. This is a really shallow thing to say, but when you see her in up close clips like this, it's almost shocking how beautiful Nunez is. Her face is insane.- 286 replies

I'm one of those people. He's certainly spectacular, but for me it's all just too much.

Found this comment by Debra Craine in The Times pretty interesting. I found McRae pretty spectacular in Rhapsody, but I agree it was very much a 'performance' that was all about him. "McRae.....delivered a self-regarding display of technical fireworks, like Puck on speed. It may have pleased the audience on Friday night, but it undermined Ashton’s mood of dreamy amour and scuppered Laura Morera’s attempt to engage fully with the choreography’s more restrained emotional colours."

Do you go to the Stage Door?
chrischris replied to Jan McNulty's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
I know of a couple of people who have left anonymous presents for actors in theatre productions, which I think is a lovely gesture, and I imagine would be really appreciated, whatever your profession. -
This is the time of year as well when everyone has colds or the flu and people feel generally rubbish, so the lack of a second cast is so bizarre. I think I remember reading Ratmanksy say putting on 24 Preludes for the RB this time last year was tough as there wasn't much rehearsal time and everyone was sick (and there was an almost complete switch in cast for one of the performances) so you'd think they would prepare for the possibility.

Exactly, and it's just unfortunate that it was a Saturday night performance, as I imagine that is when a lot of non-regulars go.

Yes, I know, and exactly. Why would the RB let McGregor take that risk?

Loved Rhapsody. Thought McRae was awesome. Gloria is interesting but it dragged for me a bit. I won't mention what I thought of Tetractys as it will probably break some forum rule. Would be interesting to read what other people thought.

Royal Ballet - 2013/14 booking period 2 - casting
chrischris replied to barton22's topic in Ballet / Dance news & information
You can personally admire dancers and still get a bit tired of seeing them all the time, particularly when the choreography can be similar. I love the rolling stones but I can't listen to them every day. -

I didn't see it last time but I love the premise and I really like Scarlett's work. I am intrigued about Serenade as I have my issues with Balanchine but am determined to see as many as I can. I don't like Wheeldon's stuff but I love the Nyman music of DGV so i'm hoping i'll enjoy it. I'm not keen on this triple bill. In fact i've been pretty underwhelmed with this whole RB season. -

Yeah i'd be surprised if Hamilton wasn't involved. At least there will be a couple of new people to watch. It's the same with Wheeldon though (which i've already discussed before). It's always the same. Sweet Violets is really the only thing i'm looking forward to this season. -

I should be really excited about this new McGregor but it's the same cast he always uses and I have a horrible feeling it's going to be his usual shtick. Hope i'm wrong. -
Don't usually posts stuff like this, but this is so sad. Such a mesmerising actor, in some of the greatest films of the last 20 years. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-26009575

chrischris replied to barton22's topic in Ballet / Dance news & information
Yeah it must be tough. Personally would like to see Underwood given some lead character roles. It's a fine balance though. I bet there were a few principal noses put out of joint when Gartside got Mayerling. -
Royal Ballet - 2013/14 booking period 2 - casting
chrischris replied to barton22's topic in Ballet / Dance news & information
I know it probably isn't always possible, but it would be nice if, instead of getting dancers like Bonelli and McRae to cover them, they trained up some of the soloists or first soloists as cover. I though it was great of O'Hare to give Mayerling to Gartside last season when Kobborg was injured, instead of more obvious choices, and it would be nice if something similar happened this season in the event of anyone being injured.
