  1. Wow just wow. As far as I am concerned, they should rename the ballet Alina. She just owns the role. And Alexandr Trusch is like getting an extra present at Christmas. Perfect for Albrecht. I loved them together at the Nureyev gala and am so glad I got to see them in Giselle. The whole company was wonderful. Agree with the comments above and the emotion of the anthems. The acting was excellent, with some nice details. At one point, while he is dancing to his death, Hilarion (Danylo Butenko) glanced down at his leg as he couldn't believe it was moving against his will. And I didn't have to wonder if Albrecht was a cad; his love was real 🤍
  2. Agree. I love the TKTS booth, but even more love last minute deals I do not have to queue for 😄 Would be so great to see a full house for Giselle and any contribution is better than none. I consider my full priced ticket a donation and my cheap one an extra treat 🩰
  3. If you haven't seen already, London Theatre Direct has some great deals for the Tues, Wed and Thursday performances of Giselle. Having booked full price tickets back when, this means I can now afford to see another cast (Alina 🤩 and Alexandr Trusch, who I thought was fantastic in the Nureyev gala). Time will tell if they extend the offer to Friday and Saturday; I hope they get a full house for all shows.
  4. Being a dance lover and longtime supporter/friend of the Royal Ballet doesn't prevent me from agreeing that the ROH could do a better job on communication. They are a world-class organisation, but not particularly user-centric (i.e., structuring their marketing, website, et al, around user needs)
  5. As ticket prices are related to the ROH as a business, I noticed they have engaged a search firm to find four new Trustees. classical music arts management public sector leadership commercial brand development The last one specifically looking for expertise in 'new revenue streams and maximising revenues' but they all relate somewhat to 'the need to be financially sustainable' mentioned in the ROH post. If I was Alex Beard I would recruit a fifth new Trustee with a specific background in website development, ecommerce and successful digital products. To maximise revenues, your new revenue stream functionality needs to be as world class as the artists providing the content. The deadline for consideration is 25th August 2022 if anyone wants to apply.
  6. Am interested in the ROH streaming platform, as they have been working on it for quite a while. I got to see the beta trial version last winter (content was mostly a selection from their DVD archive) and was asked to participate in focus group research in July (but I couldn't do the date). Fwiw, I think the ROH — similar to many covid disrupted companies — is seeking an always-on subscription based revenue stream, but robust digital products are hard to build 🤓
  7. When I pick between casts, my default is to see a principal role debut. Except in this case. Am seeing Ball and Hirano. Haven't seen either in Mayerling before tbh, so but both feel much more Rudolf to me. And the rest of the cast looks amazing as well.
  8. Without adding any unwelcome clamour, or taking the thread away from these deserving promotions, I celebrate everyone in the ballet world who is helping Ukraine dancers whose lives and careers have been devastated by Putin's war. This is not to say the RB should do this or that — obviously that's up to Kevin and/or the board and I'm sure it is a complex equation. As an individual, I've donated money and am also thrilled to support in a small enjoyable way galas like the upcoming Giselle by Alexei Ratmansky for the United Ukrainian Ballet. IMO dancers want jobs even more than donations, so it is no shade to the RB to say bravo to all the companies and schools that are able to find a place for these uprooted artists 💙 💛
  9. Happy for the talented Marco Masciari and do hope he gets some opportunities to show off next season (if I may be forgiven a non technical term). It is so interesting to follow the Prix de Lausanne winners.
  10. Agree. I had not seen a male dancer in the Amour role before and he really stole the show. Bit of luxury casting I guess as Tzu-Chao Chou is a principal. He is playing Basilio tonight. (Wish I had a ticket.) Normally I think the dream sequence is a forced bit of narrative, but I loved it all last night. The set was perfect and the dancing was joyful. Don Q is a great talent showcase as there are many plum parts besides the main couple. Momoko and Mathias were fantastic and so were all the other characters. Espada is one of my all-time fave 'supporting actor' parts and Brandon Lawrence is my (so far) fave BRB dancer, so it was a joy to see him shine on opening night. It must be so fun for a dancer to get to be a dashing matador. Loved his Mercedes, Yu Kurihara, as well. They get to be Basilio and Kitri on Saturday; another ticket I want to get! Was a treat to get to see BRB, as I don't get to very often. They have so many talented dancers taking turns with the main roles. Hope everyone in the London area gets a chance to see this show at least once while it is here. What a feel good evening 🌞
  11. Not that I know of in the ROH interface. For me, it helps to navigate back (via Chrome) by depressing the browser back arrow to show all the previous pages of that window's session, so I can jump back to my previously filtered results page of ballet/main stage where I started
  12. I don't think that is what I mean exactly. 'Derivative' usually seen as a negative word, but classical ballet by nature uses the same steps. My point was that when I see choreography where the lifts are so hard / in such intricate poses that you wonder about the mechanics, it make me think the choreographer is trying to outdo MacMillan, vs say Balanchine, where the pas de deux (no matter how actually hard) look effortless.
  13. For me, I see MacMillan influence as not just copying exact steps. But in following his path, that is putting lifts, etc, into the choreography that strive to be unique/never seen before. Can come across as 'trying too hard' imo — some of the shapes in LWFC were reminding me of yoga poses more than ballet 🧘🏽‍♀️
  14. My thoughts exactly. The music reminded me of a film score. Fit the action but I didn't remember any of it from the rehearsal on Wed to the opening on Thursday. An observation more than a criticism. Fwiw, I cannot imagine what it is like having your work judged against composers like Tchaikovsky. Enjoying any cast (or company) in Swan Lake is so much easier when you bring a deep lifelong love of that music with you to the show 🎶
  15. I see that Clare Calvert and Meaghan Grace Hinkis are the sisters to Yasmine Naghdi's Tita today. Does anyone know who will be in the Akane Takada / Alexander Campbell cast? Especially interested in who gets the plum Juan Alejandrez role as well. (Really wish the Royal Ballet would publish a full cast list in advance, but hey ho.)
  16. I do like that there are lots of meaty parts in this ballet, especially with such luxe casting tonight. Kinda hope Mayara gets to also play sexy Gertrudis in another cast. And wow yes Cesar — totally amazing.
  17. I was surprised to see the first cast doing the rehearsal tonight as the opening is tomorrow. Not much time to rest
  18. I certainly read and appreciate the Links, but also think relevant articles can add to a discussion in situ if that makes sense.
  19. Nice picture story in the Guardian of LWFC rehearsal. Happy to see Mayara Magri in one of the pictures. Guessing she plays a sister. Must say that the Royal Ballet marketing dept seems to be doing a good job on promoting this new work.
  20. While the harlots don't exist in Shakespeare's R&J, they get to do quite a lot of dancing in the ballet. Idk if a principal dancer has ever done Rosaline in the past, but if so that would be closer to the Bay Middleton role, if we want to compare different ballets.
  21. I agree with this. Surely that character role (which would be a thrill for a corps member) is a waste of principal talent. And am also dismayed by the lack of Alex Campbell. Hoping they both get a chance to shine in the new Crystal Pite. Leads me to ask the experts here if principal dancers have any say in what roles they do? I always assumed that rank had its privileges, but I don't know how companies like the RB are run.
  22. What issue is this in please? Print only? (googling but I cannot find it online)
