  1. Yes the clunking was very distracting and seemed rather weird just at that moment. But at least it was over quickly, unlike having to suffer someone coughing through a whole Act - particularly such a beautiful one. Every sympathy, Sim !
  2. Last night at the ROH during near the end of the first scene of Act III of R&J, at a particularly dramatic moment (just as Juliet was in the throes of deciding to leave to see the Friar) someone walked along the back of the Stalls Circle, presumably to an exit, making an almighty clunking sound with each step. I can appreciate some problem may have necessitated their leaving but you would think they would at least have tried to do it quietly.
  3. Just in case anyone was still wondering, I thought Akane Takada gave a mesmerising debut performance as Juliet last night. Her dancing was ethereal and you could see her every thought and emotion in her body movements and facial expressions. She seems to have developed as a great actress as well as a superb dancer. So lovely to see.... I thought Hirano did a great job at relatively short notice, as a partner, and as a star-crossed lover - more so as the ballet developed and he had to express the anger, angst and grief that is Romeo's eventual lot. James Hay came up trumps again in his debut as Mercutio - a completely assured performance. The staging, lighting, costumes, and music, were wonderful, as we would expect from the RB. Other company members, and the corps, have some exhilarating dances and sword fights, and it is is rather a shame that only the main characters take their due at the curtain calls. For those main characters, though, there was much enthusiastic applause and whooping.
  4. What a brilliant evening of dramatic ballet we have just enjoyed!ðŸĪ— And all done by 10:25...😉
  5. Good idea! I would like to send best wishes to Akane Takada on her debut as Juliet tonight. (picture presumably from the General Rehearsal, with acknowledgements to artoftheroyalballet on Instagram)
  6. I think it is quite natural for people to have favourite dancers - Fonteyn would be one of yours perhaps? - and I don't think much, if any, "berating" of non-favourites goes on here, to be honest, unless I have missed something - perhaps you have some particular examples in mind? I find most discussions of performances suitably restrained and fair, even where I am not in agreement, and I am sure the excellent moderators would soon deal with anything that went too far.
  7. I did think that might have been an error, but then we seem to be living in gender-fluid times... Thanks BBB, that makes sense.
  8. Is it unusual to only have two RBS students joining the Aud Jebsen programme?
  9. I thought 7 were welcomed last July...Harris Bell, Harrison Lee, Taisuke Nakao, Katherina Nikelski, Amelia Townsend and Hang Yu from The Royal Ballet School, and Lania Atkins from the Dutch National Ballet Academy. Has one of those already gone?
  10. It doesn't seem to have been listed on the website, at least going by this link to events on 19 March https://www.roh.org.uk/events/calendar/2019/03/19?_ga=2.210123029.1694789846.1552744106-235432184.1552744106
  11. Posts on the Russian forum do suggest a possible explanation, but without adding to the specific injury speculation there, it may be that for whatever reason the original "cover plan" for Saturday's two Don Q performances, that Kevin O'Hare had in mind when he first permitted Osipova to go, is not now possible. Hence the need to avoid the risk of her picking up a problem in St P, or getting delayed on her Friday return. I can't imagine that performing Kitri twice in one day would be ideal, but that is exactly what Takada did in 2014. Having danced the matinee, she took over after Osipova was injured in Act 1 of the evening performance.
  12. Oh thanks, yes, I now see she mentions being a year late in sharing this! What a wonderful way to record Chloe's entry to the world, though. And good to see Tara-Brigitte back.
  13. That is great to hear. * Dear annamk * Dear alison On investigating our Russian "sister" forum further http://forum.balletfriends.ru it does seem as if the issue may have been related to Don Q, and in particular a fear that there might not be sufficient potential injury cover currently at the RB for the two performances on Saturday if anything happened to Osipova in St P, or delaying her travel back on Friday. * Just trying out the mode of address quite often employed between posters on the Russian forum! Perhaps we should use it here more ...particularly effective for appearing polite whilst actually being patronising, or prior to hurling an insult ! Not that I would ever do that of course....
  14. Whilst he has danced Albrecht (with Hayward) and Des Grieux (with Takada) it was as a sub. rather than first choice. I would have thought he would also have made a great sub. for McRae as Romeo, particularly with Takada as Juliet as they had a great partnership in Manon as referred to above (as well as more recently in Don Q). But yes, we have been here before.
  15. Sorry, no it wasn't, I have now deleted that comment. Let's just hope there are no more RB cast changes this week due to injury.
  16. Presumably "standby" could only be for Juliet tomorrow or more likely Thursday... it may be thought unlikely that she would be kept back for that, in between dancing Kitri tonight and on Saturday, but on the other hand it seems those other commitments were not originally expected to prevent her dancing as Kitri at the Mariinsky on Thursday.
  17. So unless I am mistaken, on Thursday we have role debuts for Juliet (Takada) 💃, Romeo (Hirano) 🕚 and Mercutio (Hay)ðŸĪš! Slightly nervous for them, but they are all professionals and fantastic dancers and I'm looking forward very much to their performances. Best wishes to all!
  18. Email just received from ROH..... "Our records show that you are due to attend a performance of Romeo and Juliet. We are contacting you to let you know that, due to injury, Steven McRae is replaced by Ryoichi Hirano as Romeo on Thursday 28 March".
