  1. Among the RB salaries I find it interested that Principal Character Artists earn the same as First Soloists. I had assumed that the former would earn more than the latter. Although I suppose that those who also have coaching/staging jobs might get paid more. I was also having a look at the opera companies' pay & the WNO chorus contracts look rather depressing: only a £2000 difference covers 6 grades of pay ranging from under 2 years of service to over 15 years. That doesn't seem much of a pay rise for putting in that many years with a company. (Sorry, comment not that relevant to young dancers. I was thinking this was in the general discussion section rather than the Doing Dance one.)
  2. I find it interesting that 4 of the 7 new junior dancers are from the RBS and none from Elmhurst. I was under the vague impression that Elmhurst was to an extent supposed to be the feeder school for BRB but that's evidently not the case.
  3. Having only been watching the RB for a few years, I've seen Morera in far fewer roles than the rest of you, only 7 in full length ballets & 6 in short ones. I wish I had been able to see her in more but between covid knocking out 18 months, her not being cast in several of the RB's big 3-acters & a couple of injury-related replacements (I remain gutted not to have seen her as Mary Vetsera) that's all I've been able to manage since I first saw her in The Concert at the end of 2018. Out of those roles, I think Manon, Giselle & Natalia Petrovna have been the ones that I thought were the best, the most moving & memorable, though that's not to say the other roles weren't very good as well. When I spoke to her at the stage door after seeing her as Cinderella I said that I wished I had started watching the RB sooner so as to have seen her in more roles & she replied something along the lines of "But think of the younger dances whose careers you'll be able to follow" which I thought was a lovely selfless sentiment from her.
  4. Afraid not. I meant the ones that are stationed around the foyers in holders. I'll leave it to those more eloquent to properly describe Morera's farewell but I was pleased that she got the full works: flower throw, procession of bouquets from RB men present & past (inc. Bonelli & Cervera), speech from O'Hare, brief speech from her.
  5. The cast list was wrong. Melissa Hamilton was on tonight. I see the online cast list has now been corrected but the printed ones at the ROH are still wrong. I couldn't spot Ashley Dean.
  6. I too would have preferred 7pm. I'm resigned to getting home late because I'm not about to miss any of her send off given that's the only reason I'm going. However I can imagine audience members who aren't as interested or aren't aware of the occasion* might duck out at the start of the curtain calls for transport reasons. *Have cast sheets for past final performances mentioned that it's a dancer's farewell? I can't recall. Tonight's doesn't anyway.
  7. The Corybantic Games cast seems to be as expected, so false alarm on that. I'm not sure about the Untitled 2023 casting though, the list seems to be all over the place rather than being in alphabetic order as it was on the previous cast lists & there are only 17 dancers listed rather than 19. Oh well, as long as Morera is dancing that's the important thing!
  8. Am I right in thinking the ROH website did previously have the cast listed for tonight's Corybantic Games? (I know it didn't for Untitled 2023.) Because it's not there at the moment. I hope that doesn't mean they are having to do a last minute rearrange due to injuries or illness.
  9. Thanks but I'm afraid I'm not really expecting to enjoy the dancing much, as I don't think much if any of it will be to my taste. I'm only going because of it being Morera's last London performance. I've not yet seen a female Principal retirement performance, though I have seen 3 male Principal ones (Kish, Soares & Bonelli).
  10. I'm not exactly looking forward to this evening as it is but now I've just discovered that Great Northern have cancelled the last fast train back from London to Cambridge so I'll have to get a slow train & won't get home until about 1am. I seem to be cursed with train problems when seeing Morera's performances: after her Giselle it took me 4 hours to get home due to a power cut half way & after her Cinderella I missed the last train before rail replacement buses kicked in & didn't get home until 2.50am. Maybe once she retires my trains will be better behaved!!
  11. You'd think the reviewer could have taken the time to quickly look up 2 dancers he/she was evidently unfamiliar with. Even a very quick glance at ENB's Dancers web page would have revealed that the two "understudies" are in fact of higher company rank than the originally scheduled leads!
  12. Oh is that what the piece is supposed to be about. I had no clue what it was supposed to be when I saw it!
  13. Hirata isn't on the cast sheets for Northampton, Nottingham or Peterborough so presumaby she was brought in just for London, which does give a bit of a provinces-not-worthy-compared-to-London vibe. I wonder if Hirata was brought in partly to impress any critics in reviewing? I assume she & Ito would have been better technically than the much more junior pairing I saw do that pdd in Peterborough & who I see did the second London performance.
  14. Isn't it fairly common for the full promotion announcement to be after the season ends? I thought in recent previous years it had at least sometimes been the case. Principal promotions have been announced earlier but it seems unlikely there will be any new Principals this time. ETA Digging through the News section, last year the full promotions announcement wasn't made until 8th July, though the Bracewell & Clarke Principal promotions had been announced on 22nd May.
  15. That possibility had occurred to me too. The height difference between the partners would be similar!
  16. Can anyone offer any opinions on the restricted view side stalls & side circle seats in the Linbury? I'm thinking of booking but I haven't been in the Linbury for several years & only a few times altogether. As I'm only interested in the event due to the promised prescence of Dame Felicity Lott, one of my favourite sopranos, I don't want to pay too much, especially as the event content is so uncertain.
  17. It's available on the iPlayer but only until tomorrow morning. Starts around 21 mins 30 in. https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m001mwsx/breakfast-13062023
  18. In the light of the discussions up thread about ticket pricing present & past, I found it interesting to come across this paragraph in a review of Aida at the ROH in the June 1973 edition of Opera magazine.
  19. Getting there but not entirely! I haven't booked yet, partly because I'm waiting to see what the weather's going to do. I don't want to be trudging up Exhibition Road in 27 degree heat & have found the RAH pretty hot for Proms in previous years, so I'm holding off & hoping next week will be cooler.
  20. I have thought about that but then it seems an awful waste of money to pay for a full evening of performance & only see 40 minutes of it.... If only Morera wasn't retiring then I could happily skip the entire thing!
  21. Wow, that zebra costume is amazing! I can now see why Brandon Lawrence said on his podcast that no-one would be able to tell if he was crying at the curtain call or not! I've never seen Still Life At The Penguin Cafe but would like to just for the costumes. How utterly infuriating for her. It's bad enough when one misses an "ordinary" performance due to train cancellations, let alone a special one like a farewell performance.
  22. The only problem with that is if, as in this case, his work is programmed as part of a mixed bill & you want to see something else on the same bill.
  23. Thank you very much for the offer but I'm afraid I don't think I want to risk standing for 3h, especially in this weather. The first time I ever tried standing anywhere, at the Globe, I blacked out & collapsed, so it's rather put me off trying standing tickets anywhere again.
