  1. Have only just caught up w their thread and am delighted that so many other members would like to see those awful cygnets quietly removed! The only performance I ever enjoyed was in an ancient.film with Morecambe and Wise! Delighted to see that their antics have been toned down a little and can now look forward to seeing the new production on 2June. But one day I'd love to see a production where Siegfried practices on them with his nice new cross bow.
  2. If you like Edwardian how about the dresses in Enigma variations?
  3. Could be useful for some of the more obscure McGregor works!
  4. And almost anything by Georgiadis - love the ball costumes in R and J,plus many in Mayerling and I think he designed the Nureyev Nutcracker, which has some beautiful costumes in it.
  5. what a lovely thread! I always fancied Tyrennio's cloak as worn by Alexander Grant - don't know what later ones have been like. But my recent passion is for Madame 's dress in Manon Act2, although pretty silly I'd look doing the cat litter tray while wearing it! Husband always fancied the male lead costume in Elite - but the thought of it still sends me into unseemly giggles .Agree totally with Penelope Simpson' s comments about her likes and dislikes and would like to add costumes for women in Act 2_of Anastasia and Bonelli showing how to look particularly handsome in evening dress in the same.
  6. she's certainly a very efficient performer, but I find Prokofiev not the best choice of composer for a competition, where to my mind you want to be able to judge qualities like lyricism, phrasing etc. Maybe a different choice of music would have convinced me more.
  7. I think some years ago there was a column in one of the newspapers headed One Man's Meat..... it would publish vastly different comments about the same artist/performance and was constantly entertaining. Mostly aimed at musical performances, but other things crept in. we all have our likes and dislikes and this is what makes a forum like this so welcome as long as we remember that my sacred cow is your dislike - and respect it! On a personal level I love meeting people who share my tastes, also people who have very different tastes and let's face it there are enough dancers around to suit everyone.
  8. Up until the closure for renovations Front Row Stalls was my favourite seat, giving a perfect view, feet and all. I think they 'improved' the rake in the orchestra stalls,so that the front few rows became lower. I've also been told that the Centrefront row of Stalls Circle can be difficult if people in the back row of Orchestra Stalls are tall.
  9. What you need Jan is some lovely way of getting him to do both parts in the same performance! I think his performances in both parts have been amazing, both beautifully danced, and I have to admit I never realised what an actor he is!
  10. I'm beginning to think De Grieux is an extremely difficult role to bring off. Let's ignore the dancing of it - the character is that of a studious young man, who falls deeply in love, then gets caught up with a nasty piece of work in Lescaut, sees his lover being carted off by Monsieur GM, flirting with other men, and finally coming to a particularly nasty end. I think its difficult for any dancer to convey his innocence and the. ever darkening situation in which he finds himself. I suspect the Abbe Prevost's sympathies were very much with him.
  11. Really enjoyed this afternoon. I think Francesca Hayward is definitely in the running to take Jennifer Penney's crown. I'm afraid Bonelli.is my sacred cow, so don't agree with some earlier comments! But having seen Campbell last week I would love to see him with Hayward. Seems to me that Bonelli's interpretation is slightly more rooted in the big, sweeping romantic style, Campbell's has a rather newer, fresher feel. Would love to have seen some of the other casts, but circumstances were against it. I think the whole cast has performed so well in this run - no weaknesses at all.
  12. slightly disappointed at the choice of finalists, and sorry the percussionist didn't make it.
  13. if you can bear to watch it the Frankenstein Insight on You Tube shows him very much. as an active participant. Some pretty nifty partnering skills shown by him!
  14. thanks Richard LH. Both manuals are pathetically mute on this point! I am investigating further.
  15. sensible dad! you never know what you're going to get! My late husband frequently refused to clap the ROH orchestra on ballet nights when they had played poorly!
  16. Dislike watching things on.my Kindle - no disrespect to any dancers but it's a bit like watching a flea circus! YouTube please!
  17. I think its the apparent cheapening of it that annoys me. If it's an exceptional performance, fine, but it's the way it's become the norm in many theatres. I did take part when the RSC did the Shakespeare histories in 2006, which was a true tour de force - 8 plays, 5 days, numerous actors all doubling/trebling parts like mad.
  18. What really annoys me are standing ovations! Not as common at the ROH, but it seems that nearly every theatre performance, even if pretty run of the mill, is greeted by people leaping to their feet and obstructing the view of others.
  19. I haven't seen her as Manon and was really looking forward to seeing her this time. So sorry that she has been unwell.
  20. Well, he doesn't really make an entrance, more a slither, when no one's looking!
  21. What a stunning performance this evening! I thought Alexander Campbell would be perfect for the part, but I hadn't realised just how perfect he would be! He looked right, made the part of De Grieux as credible as possible ( he is a bit of a wimp, after all) and his dancing was a joy to watch. He and Akane Takada looked so comfortable together - they both seem to have the same lovely elegant lines. Not a very technical term, but hope it makes sense. And I am now definitely a fully paid up member of the James Hay fan club - and if there isn't one there should be! I enjoyed his performance even more than Campbell's in the role. Marvellous dancing, acting, the whole package. The bonus was Gary Avis instead of Ben Gartside as the Gaoler. What an evening! The lady next to me had never been to the ballet before - think she had an excellent I introduction.
