  1. I think that it is just a behind the scenes documentary - not an actual performance.
  2. Yes it was. I never actually thought that I would ever get to see her in the flesh.
  3. Yes, I was sitting behind Dame Monica and I noticed the Russians too. I thought that Dame Monica handled things very well.
  4. I also saw Vivana Durante, Kevin O'Hare, Jonathan Cope sitting near me. I feel extremely lucky. Really made my evening
  5. Wow I have had a great evening. And to top it all, I was sitting right behind Dame Monica Mason
  6. That is good news regarding La Scala - I hope that they will broadcast the Ratmansky reconstructions at some point.
  7. What time did it finish? I am going in Friday night and I need to catch the last train from Liverpool Street
  8. I can't wait to see Miss Cuthbertson on Friday night. Sounds like she will be great in the role. I hope that the cinema broadcast with Miss Osipova will be released on DVD.
  9. Yes I agree that design counts for a lot. Which is why I think the 1969 production was so magical because the medieval designs contributed to the fairy-tale atmosphere.
  10. Thank you Floss for that thoughtful reply, Strange how people's perceptions differ - some people like one production, other people like other productions. I think that the concept of balance and order needs not necessarily belongs exclusively to the Louis XIV period as I think that can apply to any period of history - if you take the idea that Good and Evil needs to be held in balance. If on the other hand, you hold the idea that balance and order refers to the social order then I can see where you are coming from. The way that I see it, is that the Sleeping Beauty is first and foremost a fairy tale - I think that it needs to be filled with magic and wonder - and I think that the belief that the Sleeping Beauty is nothing more than "a Mass at the high altar of ballet" to be frankly absurd. Also I have no patience with those people who think that each production of the Sleeping Beauty must be set in the same period as the original production - it must get a bit boring sometimes to see similar types of costumes in every production. The trouble is that the ballet world is fundamentally conservative and would much rather stick to the productions that they like - which I think was the case with the ROH audience - no production of the Sleeping Beauty have ever measured up to the Messel production except for the David Walker production.
  11. That is very interesting. I know that that was the period of the 1890 production but I think that the 1921 production set it entirely in the 18th Century. So in your opinion, productions should always be set in the Louis XIV period?- why do you think that?
  12. Sounds wonderful. Why was it so hated then. I hope that there is a recording of it somewhere
  13. I would give a lot to see the Sibley/Dowell Sleeping Beauty as it is a production that has stuck in my mind as being the most magical - going upon what I have read about it. I know that it wasn't very popular, due to I think, it following close on the heels on the Messel Sleeping Beauty which people regard as being the definitive Sleeping Beauty. I think that there is room for different takes on Sleeping Beauty - surely it doesn't have to take place in the 17th to 18th Centuries. Actually if you move the period futher back in time, there you could very well believe that fairies exist in that universe. Be interested to know people's thoughts on this?
  14. Well I like it - it makes the story much easier to follow - but you are right, the story is quite simple. However, do all ballets have to be exciting - there is some lovely dancing in there. I particularly love the Fantastic Waltz and the corps des ballet dance in the first Act
  15. What time did the performance end last night? I am thinking of bus times as I need to catch the half past eleven train from Liverpool Street. I agree with Floss and Wuff. Give me reconstructions any day of the week. I wish that the RB would restore the Awakening Pas de Deux back into their Sleeping Beauty
  16. Well, I am greatly looking forward to it tonight as I have wanted to see this for a very long time. Can I just ask, why is ENB's version preferable to this version? The reason why I like this version is because Ratmansky has gone back to the notations and used them to put this production and I think that the last time the Bolshoi was here touring this version, it was very well received so what has changed between then and now? Looking forward to hearing people's thoughts on this.
