  1. I wonder if La Scala will film the Ratmansky Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty - as I am sure that a lot of people would love to see them. I do hope that that is a plan for the future.
  2. Hi there. Do anybody know what the prices are for this season. I want to save up for Fille and Anastasia.
  3. Thanks Janet. It sounds a wonderful production. I think there is room for various kinds of interpretations, as long as it respects the music. Hope to see it for myself one day.
  4. Thank you for your reply and I am sorry to have not responded before now. I hope that we can have many a stimulating discussion on here in the future. Whilst I am an avid ballet lover, I am afraid I am totally a novice when it comes to evaluating various productions - so I am hoping to learn on here.
  5. Golly, the reviews on here have been mixed. I personally prefer that a new work stimulates debate rather than boredom. Certainly it doesn't seem dull, by the sounds of it. I am sure if we gave Frankenstein and Mr Scarlett a chance - all the nit-picks will be ironed out or rethought. Question- are people on here perhaps not seeing the wood for the trees - or is there a genuine problem with the ballet as a whole. It is certainly not Strapless.
  6. True. But then it will be fresh to people who are new to ballet. People on here are a bit blasé because they seen it all before - but there are people who might haven never seen a ballet before. Don't forget also that Mr Scarlett is a very young choreographer. I don't think even Sir Kenneth or even Sir Frederick Ashton managed to struck gold time after time. They needed to get into their stride and they must have had some ballets that fell flat. It must be so hard for young choreographers these days - constantly being measured against Ashton and McMillian and the good old days and being found wanting. But that is a discussion for another time.
  7. Yes, I can understand that. But does everything have to be original? I am sure that scenes such as taverns may seem a bit unnecessary but they often help to illustrate a particular society or how a character reacts to a social situation. Take for example - the tavern scene in Mayerling. Some would say that it was completely unnecessary, too gratuitous. On the other hand, by including that scene MacMillan is showing us a glimpse of the world outside the Hofburg - a world that was yes a bit sordid and fermenting with political intrigue. Yet it is also showing us how Vienna worked at that point in time - particularly with Mitzi Casper spying for Taafe.
  8. I am looking forward to the whole season full stop. I always wanted to see Mayerling - especially with Edward Watson (Hope that he is dancing it this season). I am looking forward to Anastasia, the question is which dancer to see, Osipova, Cuthbertson or Morea?
  9. Interesting to see that the tavern scene has received the most criticism. Why is that, do you think? Is sex a subject too risqué for ballet? Or is it just our English sensibilities?
  10. Interesting to see the variety of opinions on here. I can't wait for the cinema transmission so I can make up my own mind. Mind you, it gives me an opportunity to re-read the book on my Kindle.
  11. Thank, lovely to meet you two pigeons. I love Onegin too - would love to see the Royal Ballet perform it. I would also like to see the Wedding Bouquet.
  12. Wow, that must have been a wonderful evening, Miss Seymour must have been really on fire that evening.
  13. I wanted to see it when it was on in Norwich but sadly never got around to it. What did you like about it?
  14. I agree that taste is very subjective and I think that life would be dull if we all agreed. Why didn't you like David Nixon's Swan Lake?
  15. Lol, indeed not. But he has the dramatic chops to carry it off I think
  16. How did Christopher Gable's version of Cinderella differ from the Ashton version?
  17. I can certainly see that - Mlle Kschessinskaya had quite the reputation for being quite the Diva.
  18. I am looking forward to seeing it too - I remember seeing it in 2004 and the third act just simply blowing me away. I think that the ballet holds up very well if we bear in mind that the whole ballet is taking place in Anna's imagination. A theory of mine is that Anna Anderson dances with the real Anastasia in the third Act and that the real Grand Duchess gives Anna her blessing to keep her story alive.
  19. I can see where you are coming from, MAB. I think that Miss Osipova would be smashing in the role - she is a great actress as well as a dancer. The ballet can be seen as a historical curiosity now that we know that Anna Anderson was a fraud. But when the ballet was first produced - the situation was a bit more complicated. I think that people wanted to believe that Anastasia had survived the shooting and many people were prepared to be convinced by Anna Anderson. I think that the 3rd Act, whilst powerful in its own right - needed the two other acts to put it into context. However it might be said that the first two acts are not based on the real Romanovs, they could be simply the products of Anna's imagination.
