  1. I'm not sure this is the right place to put this but here is a blog review of the Bolshoi's visit to London. http://beckmessersquill.com/2016/08/15/bolshoi-ballet-reflections-stepanova-rodkin-zakharova-smirnova-london-august-2016/
  2. In a Facebook post Ratmansky comments on le petit corsaire, which he describes as being "en travesti" and includes photos of various dancers including Karsavina in the role. https://www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=ratmansky%20night%20of%20le%20corsaire. The object each holds has a horn shape (and Ratmansky describes it as a "horn") but perhaps that's just a bad translation for "megaphone". Megaphone certainly makes more sense as it's needed for the shouting. I"m also curious about the mime in the middle of this number where the dancer seems to twirl imaginary mustaches on her way to retrieve the megaphone from the pirate who's been holding it for her. Can anyone interpret this?
  3. That's "La Petite Corsaire", one of my favorite bits. It's a horn she's holding, though, not a bottle.
  4. According to the original casting, Shipulina was to have danced Medora but due to her pregnancy was replaced by Stepanova. http://dancetabs.com/2016/04/bolshoi-ballet-summer-season-in-london-2016/ I don't see anything about Kretova, so perhaps you could provide a link or something to show that she was considered and that "management had second thoughts"?
  5. Some facts from the Bolsoi website that might be of interest: Alexandrova joined the company in 1997 and debuted as Medora in 2007 Nikulina joined the company in 2002 and debuted as Medora in 2013 Krysanova joined the company in 2003 and debuted as Medora in 2010 Stepanova joined the company in 2015 (2009 Vag graduate) and debuted as Medora in 2016. Alexandrova has been with the Bolshoi company 19 years, Nikulina 11 years, Krysanova 14 years and Stepanova 11 months. The Bolshoi website doesn't go back far enough for us to learn how many times each of these ballerinas has actually danced Medora, but we do know that Alexandrova has 9 years experience with this role, Nikulina 4 years, Krysanova 7 years and Stepanova 0 years. Based on their experience in the company and this role, one might expect that Alexandrova would be the best, Krysanova next, Nikulina third and Stepanova last. The only surprise here is that Krysanova has evidently replaced Alexandrova as the prima. It would extraordinary indeed if Stepanova, a junior ballerina new to the company with no experience in the role, had turned in a performance as Medora better than these 3 great ballerinas! In these 4 dancers we see the arc of a ballerina's career -- Stepanova just starting out, Nikulina at the midpoint, Krysanova poised to achieve great heights and Alexandrova on the down side. As we regretfully begin to say goodbye to Maria, we can celebrate Nikulina and Krysanova at their peak and anticipate a great Medora from Stepanova in future years.

  7. Moderators: First comment implies that ballerinas would be more willing to accommodate wealthy sugar daddies than young girls clutching pointe shoes, and that ROH staff would go along with this. The second comment implies that the photo of an exhausted Zakarhova might drive one to drink if witnessed in person. Isn't this enough to ban him/her? And no, I am not going to argue with you, godots-arrived. You don't deserve any further attention.
  8. Here's an instagram photo of Zakarhova signing autographs after Swan Lake last evening. To me she looks utterly exhausted. I may be in a minority here, but really, after having given so much in her performance, must she then give more just because people want things from her? Can't we just let her go home when she's tired, and explain to the kids why this is the right thing to do?n https://www.instagram.com/p/BI5AhOZglcU/?tagged=swanlake
  9. If it was Rodkin, it looks like he should be ok soon: https://www.instagram.com/p/BIxxh20AI2I/?taken-by=yuliastepa
  10. I seem to remember Dmitrichenko saying on Bolshoi Babylon that he never really wanted to be a dancer. He said that he comes from a family of dancers and his parents wanted him to dance but he wasn't all that interested. He started dancing for lack of anything else to do, was my impression. (Please correct me if I'm misremembering.) He may well take this opportunity to do something other than dance.
  11. I thought that was just a rumor. Do you have a link to the announcement? Thanks!
  12. According to the Bolshoi website, Shipulina has been replaced by Stepanova in Hans Van Manen's Frank Bridge Variations on May 19 and 20, so it does appear that she is out and will be for a while. Stepanova's appearance as Medora on Aug 12 will be her debut in that role.

  14. Filin had a long "lame duck" period during which he could not be very productive (see Bolshoi Babylon) and Vaziev just arrived in March, so it's not surprising there are things that were not taken care of. For example, the website company roster is out of date -- Hallberg, Obratsova, Maria Vinogradova, Maria Semenyachenko, Chinara Alizade, and others have not appeared on the Bolshoi stage this season, that I can tell, yet they are still on the roster. (There is no official information that I know of about why these dancers have not appeared.) Hopefully, Vaziev will soon be able to attend to these issues, but he has a lot on his plate including dealing with the internal politics (again, see Bolshoi Babylon!). It's too bad that people had to buy tickets while under a misapprehension about the casting, but if I were able to go I think I'd be really happy to see any of those performances. I would have a hard time choosing between the old guard (before they retire) and the up and coming stars. I envy those of you with tickets and hope you write nice long descriptions of the performances you attend!
  15. And here's video of Anastasia Kolegova dancing Russkaya in a tutu. A bit more action in this one, but I still prefer the Lopatkina version.
  16. Here's a video of some Vaganova students dancing "Russkaya" as a part of their training in character dance.
  17. I believe they are all students of the Vaganova Ballet Academy, and that there are each year several Nutcracker performances on the Mariinsky stage, each featuring different Vaganova students. Excerpts of various such performances were published on YouTube in December and January. If you click on the YouTube icon in the lower right hand corner of this video (thus going to YouTube), you'll see a list of related videos, some of which will be Vaganova Nutcrackers.
  18. Here is an example of a Vaganova student who will be graduating in 2015, Anastasia Lukina performing in the Mariinsky/Vaganova Nutcracker. Honestly, Mr. Fateyev, is she suited only for the corps? http://youtu.be/tFdC4yb8JrQ
  19. Not to take this off topic, but do take a look at Anastasia Lukina dancing in the Vaganova graduation performance although she is not graduating until 2015. It's now my favorite performance of this variation, so joyful and musical. http://youtu.be/K-nb5ymwisY
