Johan Kobborg no longer with ONB Romania
assoluta replied to Jan McNulty's topic in Ballet / Dance news & information
Does it? -
With most companies information to the effect that artist such-and-such is pregnant, ill, injured, or took a leave of absence is not made “official”. Such things are not reflected on the company roster either.

Zakharova still is the main star of the Bolshoi and after her it is Krysanova, an arch-technician. There aren’t many younger female dancers that are coming.

Benois De La Danse Nominees 2016
assoluta replied to SwissBalletFan's topic in Ballet / Dance news & information
That’s correct, Tereshkina was by far the best Sylvia. Fateev’s “Acting Director” position is expiring very soon, so this is his last attempt before he is gone to win something meaningful for his protégée. -

assoluta replied to Jan McNulty's topic in Ballet / Dance news & information
Yuri Fateev is not Artistic Director, he is not even Director of Mariinsky Ballet, and he has had those powers for almost 8 years. -
Zakharova will be in Japan from 23 to 30 July. Obraztsova is pregnant.

Anybody who has known anything about Mariinsky or the Vaganova Academy in recent years knows that keeping Stepanova in corps de ballet for five years was precisely one of her many humiliations. She is 25 now, while when she was entering Mariinsky at the age of 20 she was expected to be on the fast track to become a Mariinsky principal.
-
Wasn't it you, Bruce, who less than two months ago was proclaiming while, factually, the exact opposite was true? Yulia quit as a complete wreck having been trampled and humiliated constantly for the last five years in the way that only somebody as shy and meek as her could suffer. As the things stand right now we will not be seeing her at all anywhere, on any stage that matters, despite her winning last Saturday the first European Taglioni Award as «The Best Female Young Dancer», awarded to her by a unanimous verdict of all the jurors, representing all the major European ‘ballet’ countries, including the jurors who nominated her rivals. Due to the ‘generosity’ of the man you were praising, her award was not even reported on the Mariinsky page for several days despite the fact that she earned the award and got the award as a Mariinsky ballerina and even now she is still a Mariinsky ballerina (a flood of complaints sent to Mariinsky from everywhere resulted that her name finally appeared).

Whoever said that, this is demonstrably not so. Yes, she is tall, she is gorgeous, but her technique has been one of her weaknesses for a long time. Her style is not very classical, her upper body not very Vaganova style, I can't even remotely see similarities with Lopatkina's classicism.

Vaganova Academy’s graduation concerts
assoluta replied to Amelia's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
Thank you for the report. Anastasia Lukina was a real discovery for me too. My friend, a professor at the Vaganova Academy, remarked to me after the rehearsal that took place on June 10 that Lukina was turning everybody's head, she was so artistic. I saw it later myself. The Pas de Quatre on the music from “The Awakening of Flora” is not even a reconstruction, it is more of a pastiche, but Yuri Burlaka doesn't want to say how much was his pure invention. In any case, it is so fresh, so delicate, the music is light but tasteful, I watched it with two casts and I felt I could watch it for eternity. -
Cheapest/most expensive countries for 'culture'
assoluta replied to Yaffa's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
It's true that foreigners have to pay a different price at many places. It is not true, however, that an average Russian can buy tickets cheaply for a ballet at the Bolshoi. Most tickets are very expensive also for Russians. -
Cheapest/most expensive countries for 'culture'
assoluta replied to Yaffa's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
Depends where. At some ballet companies in the US the programs are both informative and well printed (besides being free). At the same time charging £12 for the program of the recent Mariinsky tour I consider well above what it should cost. One could argue it was well printed yet there was not much useful information inside. -
Cheapest/most expensive countries for 'culture'

I don't know about "cheapest/most expensive countries" but I know one of the most expensive cultural venues — and it is located in Eastern Europe. Bolshoi ballet: the tickets are ridiculously expensive. -
Views on Mats Ek and Cullberg Ballet
assoluta replied to aileen's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
I've seen enough of Ek and over a long period of time to know that his vision of choreography contradicts what I consider to be the very essence of ballet. Pas de deux with a bidet, for example, is not my idea how to utilize an étoile. -
A year later, in 2012, she was better, but still not totally impressive due to lack of refinement (and small technical errors marring some of her performances). Kondaurova on the other hand excels in Modern.

Is dance as important as maths?
assoluta replied to Terpsichore's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
Dance — no, ballet — yes. -
If you knew, Bruce, the whole truth about Stepanova's ordeal you would have understood "desperation" of some of her current supporters who discovered her several years ago. For your information: she is the same age as Skoryk (will be 25 in October), thus she is not very young anymore. At the Vaganova Academy she is considered to be probably the most talented graduate in the last 10 years.

I have no intention to open such thread, Linda. It was not my intention to discuss this topic here either. It suffices that I provided a link to the article that has been already quoted on the official Mariinsky site. It is puzzling that so few reports on the Swan Lake performances appeared in this thread so far.

I agree with the tenor of your message, Bruce. The serious problems within Mariinsky ballet are real, nevertheless, and are a very serious concern for many in the ballet world of St. Petersburg. One may choose not to want to know anything about these problems. For those who prefer to be informed, there is a recent article that provides information. It appeared in a noted Russian journal devoted to cultural issues. It's author is one of the most respected ballet scholars in Russia and a professor at the Vaganova Academy. Not a 'fan', not a member of any 'claque'. I learned a lot myself from that article. The link to the translation (the link to the original publication there too) http://balletalert.invisionzone.com/index.php?/topic/39061-who-is-to-dance-at-mariinsky/#entry340172 By the way, anybody went to see Somova and Zverev?

I think you mentioned that you just returned to London. Therefore you may not be aware that there was an entirely different set of posters. Around July 15 all of those posters were removed on the initiative of the Hochhausers and replaced with a single one, representing Stepanova as Firebird, and the reason was apparently totally different from the one you propose.
-
You ask why should Skoryk be furious. Imagine the feelings the Step sister experiences going to a ball where she is presented as a star and seeing Cinderella on every poster. The parallel is very precise, by the way. It seems that next to nothing about the situation at Mariinsky can be assumed to be known on this forum.
