  1. This thread reminds me of a festival DD took a tumble during her modern but jumped right back into it not missing a beat and managed to still get a medal. We were amazed and dd was convinced that the adjudicator must have been looking elsewhere for a split second. I think these are the experiences that shape great dancers x
  2. So much for the "no dancing day" I have just caught her in Pointe shoes (only doing a few rises as she has only just started pointe work). Glands are still slightly swollen but not as much as Friday, I plan to take her to see GP tomorrow (if i can get an appointment) just to be on the safe side.
  3. No temperature, she has had a busy week with school residential so perhaps a bit tired. She has agreed to a "no dancing day" tomorrow. So hopefully she will get some rest and see how she goes. She has audition at northern ballet next week so she needs to rest.
  4. Dd said she had no pain this morning, closer examination showed lumps at either side of groin so I think it is swollen glands. She did her audition and dance class this morning and said that she can feel a little discomfort when she takes off for a leap/jump but other than that no pain. I will be keeping a close eye on her but so far, so good. Thanks to everyone who responded
  5. She iced and went to bed, I will see how she is in the morning. Thanks
  6. It could be, everyone in the house has had a cold in the last week or two. I guess it could be coincidence but she had been practicing her dance when she came limping to me, she has worked so hard on the dance I can understand her desire to audition but she needs to look at the bigger picture. I will see how she is in the morning.
  7. Dd had complained this evening that she has pain in her groin. She has rested for a couple of hours and put ice on the area, before she went to bed she said it felt better but when I examined her i felt a lump. Dd has an audition tomorrow to show a solo that she choreographed herself for possible inclusion in dance school showcase so I'm concerned she's putting a brave face on. Can anyone advise what I should look out for in the morning please
  8. Hi Yorkshire Pud I'm not a regular contributor, I tend to pop in from time to time when i need guidance. I have found everyone to be really welcoming and extremely helpful. Thank you for sharing your experiences, it is really valuable to hear from people who have first hand experience.
  9. Dd's dance teacher has girls in York scholars, northern and RB Leeds & Manchester. She feels northern would be best choice (dd too old for RB Leeds and Manchester is a bit too far). She is very complementary about northern in particular and I trust her judgement. She has a great track record of students getting into vocational school. Whilst I value opinion of all the contributors on this forum, in this case I will trust that our dance teacher knows best. So going back to my question, any tips and advice would be gratefully received
  10. Does anyone have any advice for the girls through to next audition? Is there any way to prepare? Thanks
  11. I'm interested to hear too, where is better York scholars or northern ballet ?
  12. Great news Alexa, well done to your DD.
  13. Good luck with the next round, it sounds like you will have a busy year if all goes to plan. I'm glad your DD is enjoying York Scholars, I have heard good things about it, will your DD continue at York if successful with Northern?
  14. Thank you, are you waiting for next round Alexa ? (I don't know how the CAT scheme works)
  15. Just received an email. DD is through to the next audition on 29th March. Good luck to anyone else waiting
  16. DD auditioned for associates but not CAT so we are waiting for a letter too. I understand from another mum at our dance school that letters were actually posted on Friday, so we should hear any day now (no idea if it was first or second class). Good luck everyone
  17. DD started body conditioning class recently, when a I asked what it involves she said it was more ballet, so not a fitness class as I had envisiged. I'm new to all this too so I can not advise any further.
  18. Wow Loulabelle the dance World Cup! That sounds very exciting !!! Good luck with the tutu making and good luck to your dd with the dancing. Thanks for the other recommendations, I will check them out. Pups_mum what a fab idea.
  19. I guess it makes sense for there to be a years wait for a quality tutu, they are works of art in their own right. I can imaging that pleating all that net is hard work Loulabelle, but what a fabulous thing to be able to create. Where are you based? Sarahw, thanks for your help, we are in East Yorkshire so i will have a look for something local (I may be totally naive in my expectation, but i'm hoping that there will be somebody) I think DD will get another year out of the one she has.
  20. Sorry if this is not in the right section, I wasn't sure where best to post. I bought DD's last tutu from ebay, it was not quite a disaster, but i can see that it could have gone badly wrong. The tutu was much smaller than described (and measurements provided), fortunately I was expecting to have it made smaller so it wasn't a problem. My mum is great with a sewing machine and she managed to rescue it, it also needed quite a bit of tlc to bring it back to life. At our last dance festival a tutu maker had a stall displaying her work, however, I found that she is booked up for the next year, is this normal? do you all plan well in advance new tutu's? I really like the idea of decorating a tutu myself but I would not be able to make the actual tutu, has anyone bought a plain tutu off the peg and customised it yourself? if so can anyone recommend a plain pancake style tutu. Many thanks
  21. Thank you for your kind comments. Yes, my older daughter is still at the same school and doing very well, dance teacher has commented that since her sister left my older daughter has improved greatly. I think she has always felt like she could never be as good as her sister so didn't try. It appears that without the pressure of her little sis being in the same class she is putting more into her dance. It is win/win as far as i am concerned.
  22. DD did this summer school this year and loved every minute.
  23. Its been a while since in have looked in on this forum and thought it would be nice to update you. We decided that the first school we looked at wasn't for us (the teaching was excellent but location and time wise it caused problems) plus i felt that i had been a little railroaded into starting classes there. So, we made the decision to have a few weeks out and consider options, I contacted a studio a few miles away from where we live (this school has a fabulous reputation but crossing the city centre at rush hour had always put me off, i like to take the easy option) the teacher was lovely, very encouraging without being pushy. DD did a few weeks trial and in January made the plunge and signed up to their dance program, she now dances over 10 hours a week and loves every minute of it. DD is making great progress and is delighted to have her first pair of pointe shoes. We worked hard to maintain a relationship with the original dance teacher and she has now come around. So apart from now spending my life ferrying DD to and from dancing, all is good.
  24. I'm not sure how helpful this is for dance, I suffered from large blisters when running and found that taping my feet with duct tape before a long run helped (I think the tip came from an ex military friend). Also agree with surgical spirit and letting them dry out.
  25. Wow, I have learned lots from this post, thank you everyone. DD's new dance teacher commented that DD has swayback knees, now I understand what she means
