  1. Did anyone else go? We thought it quite extraordinary. Not the usual kind of thing we see, but inventive and very skilfully presented. Might write a bit more later, but if you're going tonight, you're in for a treat.
  2. Gutting, I'm sure, but presumably if you click through to see past profile pics, your DD's cheesy grin will feature?
  3. Strange to be talking about this here in a way, but delighted that Shannon and Peter got through. I do think it's not right that acts that do all the "<Insert Country>'s Got Talent" competitions are dominating. My personal preference would be to change the name of the show OR only allow people who live here to enter. Or, as a last option, let the voters know about this (the fake ignorance of the judges is another matter!) rather than forcing them to do their own research.
  4. I really liked it (apart from Act 1). The other bit that had our cinema giggling was when Darcy did some kind of amused sigh following Ore's enthusiastic reading from Autocue...
  5. Anyone here (or offspring!) going? I hear that they're a bit light on numbers, so if you're thinking about it, others are crossing fingers, hoping it'll go ahead!
  6. Hopefully it's not the Gregg Wallace Collection ;-)
  7. Thanks all! I did mean PP-8, but very interested to hear about vocational as well. Good stuff!
  8. I was just wondering if they ever award 100% in RAD graded exams? Perhaps even if Osipova did it (in secret) there might be some secret code that perfection is impossible? Or maybe grades are considered a trifling irrelevance in terms of perfection!
  9. How old is Albrecht supposed to be, though? Yes, boyish, but that works for me. He behaved somewhat immaturely, so why not put him in his early 20's? Yes, Nunez not as girlish as Osipova, but very moving end to Act I. Would love to see Osipova with Muntagirov (and Nunez as Myrthe). Agreed on Pd6 - seemingly better than the real performance we saw. I was interested to see how the "big numbers" of the Wilis would work on the cinema, and I've got to say it didn't work quite as well as live - possibly because the camera angle was quite low. The star formation bit where they bend back and forth while on the floor was breathtaking from the balcony, not so much on the screen (and maybe too much zooming).
  10. Wow! That was great at the cinema. Muntgirov brilliant. Myrthe, I've got to say, had the look of a startled drag queen. Maybe as intended? Lovely to see Yuhui Choe - so beautiful!
  11. No Parma violets here, and some youngsters did turn up later (as is our way!!). Fantastic performance and great to see it larger than life. A treat!
  12. Bloody hell - you're not wrong! My first ballet cinema and I must be half the age of mist of the punters in the lobby!
  13. One of the interesting (to me) things about the film was the way in which the ballet sequences were shot - rather psychedelic and not at all of a stage performance. It made me wonder how one might reimagine ballet without the constraints of a theatre. Keep the choreography (or the essence of it) yet render the dancers in a more flexible and artistically unbounded setting. Obviously it could be regarded as a travesty, but the creative potential was proved to me by that film.
  14. Sorry, I don't have any. As a ballet Dad, we have to pretend that all this is under suffrance. Sometimes we talk about cars, or wine, but never ballet - it's the rules! (I do get some second-hand stories from DW, but I forget most of them. None of them are as juicy as those here, though)
  15. I guess it's as hard comparing dancers from different eras as it is comparing tennis players. Harder, probably as these things are so personal. Doesn't mean one shouldn't try, though....
  16. My feeling is that the story is very much up his street. Almost too much! I presume there will be some fun technical innovations, so best give them a couple of weeks to iron out the niggles. I was pretty struck by the film and wondered why I'd never heard of it before I saw it on TV (I suppose Kate Bush made a reference, though). It's one of those "theoretically famous" films, I suppose.
  17. Blimey, what a thread! Not sure if men are allowed to comment, but Annaliesey, if you like I'll make you a t-shirt guaranteed to keep the Dance "moms" away...
  18. Has anyone else booked to see this? We've booked for Saturday 17th as a pre-Christmas treat. Went for 8 tickets to get the dscount, so hopefully will be able to find some friends/family to come with us!
  19. Natalia Osipova leaps into a new programme of contemporary dance at Sadler’s Wells, 29 June - 3 July 2016 I was wondering about booking for this. Is anyone else going? Not sure what to expect, but that girl's got "it" as far as I am concerned and this could be a rare opportunity to get within range to see her face!
  20. I was slightly surprised by some of the premature (by normal British standards) applause and shouting of 'Brava'. I didn't mind it, though. Or is that normal these days?
  21. So I took my laser along last night but didn't need to use it. One of the more annoying audience members was myself as I had a nasty tickly cough. I tried hard to not cough and muffled it in my jumper, and thankfully I wasn't sitting that near many people (a strangely isolated seat in the corner of the balcony - view slightly obscured by some little safety rail thing).
  22. I saw where she kind of poked herself with the sword, but I think it was the classic "cry for help" rather than a successfully mortal wound. Totally agree on the mad scene. She reminded me of Kate Bush with the hair out, and that was really rather powerful. Myrthe was wonderful - and the contrast between Nunez and Osipova was indeed spellbinding - Osipova does that childlike thing so well (we saw her in La Fille Mal Gardée) but I hope that she can do more serious roles and that she's not the ballet equivalent of Hugh Grant! Fantastic developées, too. Nunes more mature grace and elegance. I would have loved to see her Giselle. I should have kept one of those tickets for 17th... Also, it made me think that I should consider splashing out on seats where you can see the facial expressions better. Myrthe's acting was very subtle and I felt we were missing out from the balcony. Hard when there's usually 4 of us, though. Of course the corps de ballet was fabulous and the Wiles dances evoked Swan Lake for me. Loved the bit where they were in a kind of star formation and bowing down, and great precision in the running around bits. Is Golding being groomed as a long term partner for Osipova? I hate to say it, but a shame if that is so, as he is a bit one-dimensional (the Roger Moore of ballet?! ;-))
