  1. It's a wonderful experience if approached with the right mind set. He should make good friends - and could do it for the next 10 years! Which show is it?
  2. I wonder what effect the new living wage will have on dance companies? Higher ticket prices?
  3. Wow - all these years (OK, months) I've assumed Taxi was male!!!! ;-) (probably for no better reason than I've never seen a female taxi-driver - even though I realise that she's [probably] not a licensed cabbie...)
  4. First steps is the one. Kit Dickinson is a fantastic teacher and regular on RAD courses. Also does a great adult ballet class! You'll also be very convenient for LCS (or is it LSC?) who do their stuff on Saturdays
  5. My take was that it was simply a variation on an "every cloud has a silver lining" comment.
  6. If he's any good at all he should get in! The standard of male dancers not as high as female in my very limited experience.
  7. They'll find someone to take them in!
  8. Well, we'll see... I don't know about you, but I often find things that look great on the website disappoint by the time they've been delivered! Having said that, the negative comments mostly seem to be about them being a bit short, which is unlikely to be a problem here (probably). Can't believe that I've never seen Les Mis (either on stage or screen) - but this seems to match with the general vibe ;-)
  9. Well, the spec changed slightly and they're probably going for these (from Amazon) http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00ONT3G9Q/ref=s9_simh_gw_p193_d0_i3?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=desktop-1&pf_rd_r=05TJ25P8XKB362WH9X4T&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=577048787&pf_rd_i=desktop
  10. Cheers. She's now looking at cheap normal dresses - quite a lot of choice around the £15 mark...
  11. Maybe (not me personally, but I know some handy with needle & thread!). The problem is getting 3 the same. To be honest, £30 isn't so very bad, but given that there are only 3 shows, it seems a bit wasteful! Btw, this is going to be danced to "I dreamed a dream" and so something a bit raggedy would work well...
  12. How risky would something like this be, I wonder? http://m.alibaba.com/product/1889758736/Woman-lady-girl-lyrical-dance-dress.html#
  13. Yes, £29.95 is certainly an improvement.
  14. DD is looking to source 3 lyrical style dresses for a little show she's doing at school. Something a bit like this: http://www.capezio.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/650x/040ec09b1e35df139433887a97daa66f/b/g/bg001_wht_325.jpg Is it possible to hire such things? Or get them cheaper than £35?
  15. We'll look out for those, cheers. (And I think the only one that was confused was me!!!)
  16. So I guess there's a large element of non-technical crowd-pleasing. I must try and go to such a festival sometime. Are they advertised here?
  17. What is s character duet/dance anyway? Always seems to involve dressing up as an Eastern European with ribbons and long skirts - but is that just one possible interpretation? One definition my phone suggests: a style of ballet deriving inspiration from national or folk dances, or interpreting and representing a particular profession, mode of living, or personality. That "or" is a new one on me, and presumably forms the basis of the OP? For some strange reason, the tune "typewriter" comes to mind. Ha! This is quite fun
  18. I wasn't meaning to belittle EYB, but I suspect that it's far easier to get through the audition process due to (what I presume to be!!) the relative lack of competition compared to NYB? At least DD (who made the scholarship shortlist for EYB) reckons she's got "no chance" at NYB!
  19. ...is there anything that sits between EYB & NYB in terms of difficulty of getting in/the challenge it represents?
  20. How good do you have to be to get in (as a 17 year old)? eg. Are they expecting Advanced 2 with distinction?! Is it really for full time associates?
