  1. I'll second Wadjda - wonderful film. Apparently as the director was a woman, and could not be seen giving instructions to men, she had to direct scenes from inside a van.
  2. Sticking with the 21st century parameter, it's an interesting list. I've seen almost half of those on the list - and of those, some were outstanding and some I just gave up on. There are notable omissions for me too - off the top of my head I'd add Volver, Games of Love and Chance, Wild Tales, Ex Machina, Antichrist, Rust and Bone... Taking the films on the original list of 100 that I've seen, and stripping out the big blockbusters that people here are most likely to have seen, I'd recommend the following as well worth looking up: 15. 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (Cristian Mungiu, 2007) 17. Pan's Labyrinth (Guillermo Del Toro, 2006) 32. The Lives of Others (Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, 2006) 43. Melancholia (Lars von Trier, 2011) 45. Blue Is the Warmest Color (Abdellatif Kechiche, 2013) 64. The Great Beauty (Paolo Sorrentino, 2013) 65. Fish Tank (Andrea Arnold, 2009) 36. Timbuktu (Abderrahmane Sissako, 2014) 7. The Tree of Life (Terrence Malick, 2011) 9. A Separation (Asghar Farhadi, 2011) 91. The Secret in Their Eyes (Juan José Campanella, 2009) 94. Let the Right One In (Tomas Alfredson, 2008) I'd caveat that those of genteel sensibilities should probably avoid 45, and certainly not watch it with the vicar.

I suspect this has infiltrated British English from US TV, where it is very common. Another US TV phrase that I hope does not take root in the UK is "I need you to....", which infuriates me with its passive-aggressive rudeness!

    Olympics 2016

'WTF' is entirely appropriate for Olympic taekwondo as far as I am concerned... They've taken a functional martial art and turned it into Riverdance. I believe the ITF rules are more similar to karate competition rules, with head punches, sweeps etc. I just pray that when karate makes it into the 2020 games, the IOC doesn't mess that up too.
  5. I have to pay for two TV licenses and would happily forgo the pleasures of the BBC, or put up with adverts on it, in order to avoid that. It seems an archaic and heavy handed way of collecting revenue. I know the Beeb is something of a sacred cow (and maybe even a 'scared cow' as autocorrect just suggested), but it seems to have strayed way from its original remit into very generalist territory and with dubious political objectivity. I watch a lot of films from subscription services, but only really use live TV for news, so the license really grates.

"nucular" This has become common, albeit no less forgivable, in the US, but I actually heard a newsreader on London News say it last night. Blackboard-scrapingly painful to my ears.
  7. sadly, we found this little fellow expired outside the door this morning - a brown long nosed bat. a face only a mother could love, but an amazing feat of evolution.. look at those ears - apparently they can hear a ladybird walking across a leaf!
  8. I'm advised by a more knowledgeable friend that it was a young one begging for food, not an amorous pair!
  9. spotted these two love-birds though the kitchen window just now, going through a quite chatty courtship ritual!
  10. Given the degree of giggling and eyeing-up that has been going on over the last week, Mrs Q and I were rather hoping that it was going to end in a big old on-court smooch It was a great match to watch as their enjoyment was infectious; in fact I found it far more entertaining than the Murray match.
  11. must admit I never knew what they meant either!
  12. Yes, in theory at least. My 200 is a 2.8, hence pretty large, and I guess it was the size that made them query it. I think last time I went the wording was vaguer, more like 'non professional equipment' but this time they specified 300mm. In reality 300 is still not enough to get you good sharp shots from most seats in CC; I had a teleconverter on getting me 280mm on an FX camera from about a third of the way up the seats, and still had to crop up from a relatively small part of the frame. The pros are all festooned with 400mm whoppers and sitting bang on the court edge...
  13. It's doubtless cool, as it seemed to spend much of its time above her waist. Not a dress for the shy and retiring, and I'm not entirely sure Wimbledon is yet ready for the floaty bikini look. Not being a total cad, I won't be publishing my photos illustrating that - but not being a total gentleman either, neither shall I be deleting them . On the subject of photos, Caro Garcia 'liked' the ones I took of her and put on Instagram, it's always gratifying when that happens. I did have a slightly surreal moment at bag check, as the guard was trying to insist my lens was too big - despite it being a 200mm, and the non-pros limit being 300mm.
  14. Got very lucky yesterday, seeing Murray, Garcia, Mladenovic, Brown and various others. I had good seat on CC for the Bouchard v Konta match and what an absolute cracker that was. Bouchard was back on the same kind of fast, aggressive form that made her such an exciting new face a couple of years ago, before she completely lost the plot. She seems to have gained mental toughness to add to her athleticism; let's hope it lasts.. I understand there was some controversy about her rather short and transparent Nike dress, so I took about a hundred photos for analysis and have managed to convince myself that it was fine
  15. We've got Centre Court on Thursday. Most of the players I like to watch are however already out or excluded - Sharapova, Ivanovic, Robson, Bouchard. Fingers crossed Garcia survives that far.
  16. has there been some career event for Ksenia Ovsyanick coming out of or in parallel to the Paris performances? She's just posted "What an honour to perform on ‪#‎palaisgarnier‬ stage! Thank you Paris for reception! And can't put in words yet, as overwhelmed for the moment, but @enbtweets... thank you for the most amazing 8 years! ‪#‎new chapter‬" If Palais G have poached her I shall be going on a fromage boycott.
  17. I did ask my wife "apart from fame, youth, looks, height, hair and money, what has he got that I haven't?' She chose not to reply, so I take that as a win. The fish and chip shop there is pretty much our local - we're only twenty minutes away. The wild flowers on the beach are glorious at the moment, particularly the big drifts of valerian.
  18. Having popped over to Aldeburgh for fish and chips on the beach, on the way back to the car I swerved to avoid bumping into a guy on the pavement. It was only when my wife went all googly eyed and started babbling like a teenager that I realised it was Tom Hiddleston.
  19. Currently watching Bouchard v Radwanska on TV and what appears to a promising return to form for Eugenie Bouchard (though I doubt she'll win). I saw her in the finals at Wimbledon a few years ago since when she's been a disaster on court and spent too much time taking selfies off court. I like her style of play, and I'd rather watch someone playing aggressively and losing, than someone who wins by methodically hacking back from the baseline.
  20. In case anyone hasn't discovered them, Brian Cox also did several series of an excellent BBC science podcast called The Infinite Monkey Cage, all of which should still be available to download. Informative and very entertaining; highly recommended.
  21. Apparently while waiting to go out on court she'd get right up close to her opponent, lock eyes and just stare her down, while refusing to say a word. Not a bundle of fun!
  22. I took my son and his girlfriend to see that and they were just blown away. Lisa, I hope you swiftly got over that doomed crush and moved on to someone more promising, like George Michael or Limahl
  23. I love Sharapova's shrieks! I think it's all part of her arsenal of psychological weapons; a friend of ours who played her on tour told us about how Sharapova would try to psych out other players behind the scenes as well as on court..
