  1. Jubilee line to Bond St and change for Central line to Holborn is probably the quickest / most reliable to get to CG then Ellie
  2. Thanks all for the replies- DD is also signed up for week 2 and I am going as well as DD has never been before. The journey does look to be a long way - thanks for the tip Angel. I was worrying about Morocco's roads (I remember they are quite bad!) but will now not forget the food/drink too...
  3. Mae 989: of course my DD is 14 and applied for the two week course. We do have a dilemma Balletqs. It's a shame but we're turning down the WL summer school place.
  4. Would anyone who has experience of these courses be willing to share info? Keen to know how many hours of dancing a day, what the standard is (and if it is too hot to dance at the summer course?) and do the kids have a good time? Also, is the October course better heat-wise? Many thanks
  5. I should have said we have lived in London for 17 years and I have never once had an issue in the tube- touch wood. Of my commuting kids, one was once pickpocketed at Victoria Station. I agree with swan princess richmond is more of a pain to CG though and Hammersmith is easier.
  6. Yes- definitely safe and doable from Hammersmith. Suggest a couple of accompanied practice runs if she is not used to travelling alone in London. The underground is very safe in the day. My kids and all their friends travel unaccompanied incl younger than yours. Many London school kids commute alone from 11.
  7. Our DD has been offered a place for the WL two week summer school too from the priority list. Unfortunately she can't go as we've since arranged two other summer schools abroad. We should have hung on a bit longer....!
  8. Just to put the other side of the ledger with my DD who is going through puberty at the mo... We have no idea if she will come out the other end with a 'ballet body' for want of a better expression and the worry is not, after everything she has put in. Excessively thin is completely awful and encouraging it with unhelpful/insensitive comments unacceptable and potentially dangerous. It has to be said though growing outwards rather than upwards is not great for ballet. I can understand parents who decide at 11, however promising their child is at ballet, academics must take priority.
  9. Yes interesting. i find it horrible but you're right without the music it's a completely different thing.
  10. I agree. I find it sad. I want to be moved to tears when I go to the ballet not watch a grinning trickster with no musicality or emotion do a million fouettes. But then I find the floor routine set to tinny music in gymnastics the ugliest thing... It's personal I suppose.
  11. Not necessarily. It depends what she has been cast as, in the two parts she has. She could be rehearsing most of the time. At summer school there are classes when not in rehearsals, which are arranged according to age and standard. How old is your DD? I remember the first year my DD was main cast and boarding at summer school I had to post her sachets of Calpol as she was aching so much from dancing by the evening that she couldn't sleep. She loved it though.... If your DD doesn't have the chance to perform much and craves to, she's going to have an amazing time.
  12. The pointe work in MAs is extremely limited- even for MA2 final year. In fact I think it's fair to say in general there is a lot of repetition of the basics to perfect the technique, no desire to see a high leg etc. It can be a bit of a frustration for eager girls who are allowed to move through to pirouetting en pointe etc and are encouraged to have the leg at 180 in other classes but of course you can see why it's done this way.
  13. Melody- I agree. Tamara Rojo reportedly trained 6 hours 6 days a week from 11 and studied in the evening. Not many teenagers have the drive to do that even supposing their parents give them that option
  14. Thanks Julie- hadn't seen this thread. The DT article looks more balanced than the Evening Standard which really fans the fire with its title "Dance training in UK is so poor we have to hire foreign performers"
  15. I felt depressed to read an article in the London Standard on the way home from work this evening that three top choreographers have apparently stated that UK students "lack rigour, technique and performance skills" and that UK students are "consistently outclassed by fitter stronger and more versatile counterparts from Asia, Europe and the USA" and that there is a "complete lack of high quality professional contemporary dance training" in UK. If it's true I am pleased they have said so but it's a bit depressing as a parent when you are sinking thousands into your child's training. Maybe our children don't work hard enough and spend too much time on academics to compete with others in other countries who are home schooled etc but this article seems to be saying that UK training is itself an issue...
  16. There isn't a full length ballet - there are a variety of pieces of different length some classical and others modern or jazz with different choreographers of different ages and experience (from the hugely experienced to young choreographers still at voc school). There is an associate piece as well for younger children. The standard is high and some children may be cast in only one thing while others especially some of the older children are very much showcased and dance in nearly everything. The costumes are always truly stunning and the whole thing is very professionally done. I think there are some scholarships but it isn't a cheap dance experience if your child only has a small part. On the other hand the first time my DD danced at about 9 yrs old I was so amazed by the standard I could barely believe she had been cast at all and thought it v unlikely she would ever get in again. At summer school (about 10 days) they have ballet classes when not rehearsing. They have a great time all in all and make good friends they then see year after year. Any homesick first timers are looked after well as are the little ones who attend summer school on a non-boarding basis.
  17. Thanks. Is that for the Workshop in April or all results by post? We are still waiting to hear. DD has danced for several years with NYB but this year we're going to decide what to do based on parts (if she gets a yes)
  18. MAs in London know already if they are continuing for another year but those MAs moving to SAs don't yet know if they were successful at audition. I don't know when those results are coming out
  19. I know none of the WL Yr 11s - nor have I seen any of them dance - and I do not speak to any WL parents in any year. Even so I had heard on the grapevine it was not as a total year group a strong year this yr at WL so I wasn't at all surprised to hear this result. If I knew that, how come this wasn't known by the parents in the school generally. Is there no feedback, even tactful feedback, on a child's chances?
  20. And sorry without wanting to offend anyone in fact RBS may not be the right choice for everyone
  21. You'd think on that basis if you're turned down for MAs/SAs etc there would be no chance of US or even US Finals but even that I don't think is universally true. It's best not to reason too much or take any decision too much to heart. There are other excellent places to train if you don't get into RBS
  22. You could be assessed out but you don't have to re-apply for each year within MAs or to move from MA1 to MA2. When you move up to SAs though you do have to reapply and there is no guarantee of a place.
  23. We received the same for our priority waiting list place. I have to say I thought the email was really considerate... Ballet lyon my understanding is there is no need to get in touch if you want to stay on the list. We've decided to put in place other plans so will come off the list once they are confirmed. DD is not disappointed as she is at the top end of the age range for WL and actually I am not sure she would have enjoyed a summer school with lots of younger girls.
  24. Balletqueen The MA 2 assessment in London was last Saturday. Those in MA 2 waiting for SA audition results haven't heard yet.
