  1. Cesar Corrales came across from ENB Principal to RB First Soloist. My sense (no inside knowledge) is that anyone saying they would leave unless they were promoted was bluffing or should have had their bluff called. I have a feeling that Beatriz Stix Brunell (a star in my eyes) would have stayed had she been promoted in 2021 but only Mayara Magri and Anna Rose O’Sullivan got the nod. Completely separately, I wish I didn’t get the feeling, where the RB is concerned, that some roles get allocated because there are dancers who push harder than others.
  2. Yes - but those superbly performed roles are ‘free standing’. I’m still finding it difficult to come to terms with an ‘anyone should be able to do it if they want to’ approach to casting (as distinct from certain dancers sitting out the odd role for which they are not so well-suited).
  3. I absolutely LOVE Marguerite and Armand but agree that the attire of the surrounding gentlemen can be a bit off-putting. It’s amazing to note how many companies have now brought this ballet into their rep. - all while the RB is leaving it on the shelf for the moment. Just as is happening with too much Ashton. My personal list of ballets which have aged badly range from Job to works created within the last 10 years - but some of those should probably not have seen the light of day to begin with.
  4. No spare capacity in the upper ranks of the RB to invite Smirnova. Surely, there is no need to manufacture an alternative scenario?
  5. Well Casalinho and Sellman have both weighed up the situation and have made ‘better’ career choices for them.
  6. I was driving to Brum through the rain for that performance too. Fadeyechev probably wasn’t going to be the greatest Romeo but neither, alas, was KOH. And there were so many times (like this one) when I raced in from Wales and found that he, not the artist I had booked for, was dancing. Nice choices of music, though.
  7. And very difficult to manage in terms of the ongoing development and artistic fulfilment of each and every one of them.
  8. That’s really good news. But has the pay of dancers been restored? The Musicians’ Union always seems to be more effective in achieving its ends than does Equity on behalf of other artists.
  9. Actually it does, albeit rarely. There are examples of dancers (currently in the Company) being employed on a temporary basis in the first instance and subsequently being offered a full contract. Edited to add that, having double-checked her Ballet Association interview, Isabella Gasparini is one of the dancers who was initially employed specifically for the run of just two ballets. This is possibly less likely to happen now that there is the Aud Jebsen Young Dancers’ scheme.
  10. I wonder whether, as with ENB, these might be temporary contracts to cover the Nutcracker season?
  11. Yes. And/or ADs are scared of the possible backlash?
  12. Sorry to be a killjoy but The Ballet Association does ask attendees not to post news from their talks on social media. In this case, the RB should be putting the info. out officially; but maybe waiting until the end of Dante.
  13. Gosh - having all the performances, including the post-Christmas ones selling out before the end of November is pretty amazing! (Well, that comment has just been negated. Obviously there is a new sales strategy!)
  14. Possibly, dancers were invited to propose themselves and audition? Aidan O’Brien has ‘form’ as Grandfather etc so he would be ‘in the frame’. Thomas Whitehead moved straight from Soloist to Principal Character Artist.
  15. The Manon casting is what it is - for now. I think the root of the problem is that there are so many potentially fabulous casts but, this time far more than ever before, the prices are forcing choices on us which we’d rather not make. It didn’t feel like that for the 2018 or 2019 runs.
  16. I might be wrong but I don’t think there are auditions as such from the RBS to the RB. KOH ‘keeps an eye’ out and some students are invited to join the Aud Jebsen Young Dancer scheme.
  17. Instead of adding more 🌰 🌰s to the Don Q camp fire, I thought they might be worth a separate thread. (Speculation alert). Is it possible that, in the light of the COVID experience, companies might have agreed with Equity to reduce the Snowflake load on dancers? After all, the RB has some 28 shows, some of them doubled up in one day, others ‘back to back’? I think that ENB has even more (44?)
  18. Reece Clarke danced Des Grieux (twice) to Lauren Cuthbertson's Manon in May 2018. In the autumn 2019 run, he was cast for the Schools Matinee only with Melissa Hamilton but, as recorded above, also stepped in to finish the performance when poor Steven McRae was injured.
  19. Yes indeed. The reduction necessitated by Covid is now well in the past and it used to be the case that numerous RBS Upper School students were either cast or acting as covers. The stage looks silly when it is as poorly populated as it continued to be last season - huge gaps in place of magical flurries.
  20. But, since Bracewell IS cast as Des Grieux (with Naghdi), I’m not sure what the issue is here. I agree with @Amelia that it is unfortunate for a thread intended to celebrate Osipova to have been ‘invaded’ by other issues, but that does tend to happen on BCF.
  21. Yes. It seems unbelievable that guests were needed back then as we have an embarrassment of Principal riches now. But IIRC having Natalia as a guest and then, shortly afterwards, as a signed up RB Company member was bit of a feather in KOH’s cap!
  22. Great to see this after a year for Darrion of standing on the sidelines. But I was sooooo hoping there would be a way of keeping him at the RB.
  23. Fumi is F A B U L O U S whatever she is dancing and whoever she is dancing with.
