  1. By the way, a real rookie question this one, but does anyone know why the RB do the Kenneth MacMillan production and the ENB the Rudolph Nureyev one. Being about to see three of each, I was just wondering why.
  2. There are dancers from whom sex appeal comes off in waves. Not everyone can be Carlos Acosta (unfortunately!) Not all dancers are romantic lead broodingly handsome, and so playing Romeo as boyish and charming for some is the most sensible approach. Steven McRae has these qualities in spades and is gorgeous for it. One suspects his Romeo would have been the cheeky class clown to Acosta's class heartthrob. I thought it was immensely touching when the doll pretty Lamb stroked that great shock of red hair of his in the tomb. It is the first time I have seen R and J and felt I was really watching teenagers. It also makes much more sense of his sudden transfer of affections from Rosaline to Juliet.
  3. Yes thank you Irmgard. Speedy recovery to all. As I said earlier, I am also quite glad that Tamara Rojo hadn't taken on another Juliet, because I can now hold intact the memory of her as the perfect Juliet with Carlos Acosta's Romeo in my all time favourite ballet at the ROH in 2012.
  4. Oh, and the little madam look she gave Lord Capulet at one point nearly had me cheering.
  5. Gary Avis still steals every scene he is in! So commanding, and oh those red tights... Also, I thought Ryoichi Hirano was divine as Paris. I'd have chosen him over the rather silly Romeo very time. I loved the incomprehension on his face, although I did think Sarah Lamb's pulling away from him looked rather as if it was the result of too much garlic. Also, I don't know why it bothered me, but I couldn't help worrying that the pillows on her bed would give her terrible creases down her face!
  6. I have a ticket for next Thursday, supposed to be Osipova and Munatagirov, so I was bit fed up at the substitution of Lamb. So it was with some trepidation that I went to the cinema tonight to see Lamb and McRae, but I was totally won over. It is true that Lamb/McRae did not match the intensity of emotion that we have seen in so many other pairings, but I felt for that very reason that it was a much more authentic portrayal of the actual experience of young first love. Although Rojo and Acosta are my all time favourite R and J, the depth of emotion in their performance is the kind that wouldn't be achieved without much more life experience. I felt with Lamb and McRae that their R and J would probably have outgrown each other before long! I also felt for the first time not only their terrible realisation that events had conspired to keep them apart, but also that at some point they slowly realised that they had strayed into real grown up stuff!
  7. I thought they might be announced today, as they will have only just got back from abroad yesterday. Yes, I am very disappointed that I won't see Rojo, but am excited to see Alina on the Wednesday night in Bristol. Maybe Rojo is injured (or just too tired!). In some ways, in not sorry, as I carry always in my mind my all time perfect R and J, Rojo and Acosta at the ROH. I'm not sure I want to see her Juliet to anyone else!
  8. I agree, how refreshing that would have been, the young though now experienced Muntagirov and the young and lovely Hayward. A real Romeo and Juliet.
  9. True. Alina is lovely, but Tamara gives me such confidence when she dances. She is such a powerhouse still.
  10. Me too Penelope! Though I would probably have gone for Hayward. Imagine her performance will be lovely and fresh. But take consolation in the fact that you will see the divine Muntagirov still
  11. Thank you. But I was just wondering that you named AIina Cojocaru as their top dancer, I would have thought that Tamara Rojo would have been considered on a par with Alina?
  12. I wouldn't mind, but tickets for Bristol seem to be selling well, and it's hard to make a decision. I guess I shall have to rely on the old first and last night's having the first cast.
  13. How can the RB cast so early, and yet ENB cannot make an announcement for a performance less than a month away? I'm also probably more influenced by their casting in my booking choice than any other company, so it makes it very difficult. I have no objection to changes in casting that are made necessary by injury, etc.
  14. Does anyone have any idea of the castings for Romeo and Juliet yet? I am going to the Bristol performances and am dying to know. I cannot understand why the ENB leave it so late to announce casting.
  15. In the early 80s, I worked on pop videos, and I remember this one made for Icehouse's "Hey little Girl" in particular. https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DOKDYyFf1s0I&ved=0CCEQyCkwAGoVChMI0sfHi5TOxwIVBL0UCh1svgeC&usg=AFQjCNHjw7_yNvRWshj6f18bTcahmk7t-A I was in charge of props and had to dress the rooms of the old ballerina. I even had a small role, opening the door right at the beginning to the little boy! What I don't remember is where we filmed the ballet scenes. It was a ballet school. Does anyone recognise anything? It was surely the first ballet to appear in a pop video, as was at the birth of that genre.
  16. When I left the Coliseum on Friday night, l too saw a terrible sight of one poor man sitting amongst a pile of black bags and trying to make a dinner out of them.
  17. The shiny A5 flyerI picked up from a table said that Francesca Hayward would be make a guest appearance. I'm guessing this never happened. I would have loved to have seen that.
  18. Yes, LinMM,I had been five hours on coaches due to terrible traffic, to come and see this on Friday night, and at 9.15pm, I too felt that I had had my starter, and where was the main course? I applaud the Coliseum for upgrading my terrible seat to front row of dress circle, though. I too felt it seemed a shame, however, for the QB to have come all this way to bring us something so insubstantial. I don't have the technical knowledge to know how to describe my thoughts, but there were two things I didn't like. The Sylph's arm positions throughout, with the elbow resting on the hand, and the other hand under the chin gave a rather round-shouldered, round-backed impression, and foreshortened the body, in my opinion, and the fact that James cannot touch the sylph meant that I felt deprived of any real partnering and lifts between the two of them, which made their appearances on stage together a bit repetitive. (Quite a lot of 'wafting', as my friend said!
  19. I expect you're right. I was just certain that when the castings first appeared, he was down for some performances, because I remember thinking that I would have difficulty choosing between his performances and Osipova's. Also, wasn't the advertising photo of him and osipova for quite a long time, though it's now been changed, which would indicate that they had thought to use him originally? Actually, I am also very keen to see Hayward. Is this her first Juliet? Although I usually have no problem suspending disbelief when it comes to dancers in their 30s and 40s playing the not yet fourteen Juliet, it will be lovely to see someone so young and fresh and new in the role. But Acosta and Rojo will always be my R & J. I sat in my seat for ages after it finished, the first time I saw them, so stunned I couldn't move!
  20. Am I right in thinking that when the castings for R & J were first on the ROH site, that Carlos Acosta had some performances as Romeo, or did I imagine that?
  21. I have finally sorted out my tickets bought in a panic at 9.00am Tues! I have decided to go with the seat I bought, so I have this standing ticket spare for Osipova Muntagirov. The reason this is on this thread and not on tickets for sale, is because I feel awful for those who have mentioned their technical problems in this thread, so it would be nice if one of them could have it. Item Quantity Total Romeo and Juliet Thursday 1 October 2015, 7.30pm | Main Stage Stalls Circle Left, D-1 | £11.00 - Full Price (Standing Place), view obstructed by pillar, not suitable for people of short stature The only thing is, I always have my tickets held at the box office, so how does it normally work, with payment and collection of ticket?
