MJW
Barry Humphries: Dame Edna Everage comedian dies at 89 - BBC News I saw Dame Edna live some years back at the Yvonne Arnaud in Guildford; the first half was a sort of musical but the second half was Dame Edna's standup routine and was the funniest thing I have seen. Most of the audience were in fits by the end.

Fonty
Very sad news. I saw him live many years ago, when the first half was his Les Patterson character, and the wonderful Dame Edna for the second half. He really was brilliant. So funny.
Ondine
Guardian has published a tribute. Barry Humphries was a master of provocation and glorious grotesquerie Despite a legacy tainted by PC-baiting provocation, many will remember Humphries with affection as the carnivalesque Dame Edna and foul-mouthed Sir Les Patterson https://www.theguardian.com/stage/2023/apr/22/barry-humphries-alter-egos-dame-edna-everage-sir-les-patterson And an obituary. https://www.theguardian.com/stage/2023/apr/22/barry-humphries-obituary Edited April 22, 2023 by Ondine
bridiem
I saw him/her live too, many years ago, and it was an indescribably funny evening. The thing I most remember was at the end: Dame Edna in all her pomp being carried out on a kind of mechanised platform high into the auditorium towards the upper tiers (where we were), waving and throwing gladioli and screeching 'Hello Paupies' (i.e. paupers - in the cheap seats). It was surreal and absolutely joyful.

I was in stitches the whole time. Can you imagine him being allowed to perform that nowadays? So glad we were still able to laugh at genuine satirical wit.
