Alvin Ailey is a powerhouse of American dance. His career began in a time when opportunities for African American dancers were limited, but he strived to create a space for Black artists to express their experiences and heritage. Founded in 1958, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater was one of the first companies to welcome dancers of all races and backgrounds.

Programme A (Ailey Classic’s) showcases the best of Alvin Ailey. The River is a full company work that suggests tumbling rapids and meandering streams on a journey to the sea. Demonstrating Ailey’s admiration for classical ballet it retains the modern and jazz influences, it is performed to Duke Ellington’s first symphonic score written for dance. This production uniquely features costumes newly designed for the first time since the 1970s. Pas de Duke is comprised of five solos and duets, set to the music of Ellington. The work premiered in 1976 as a showcase for Judith Jamison and Mikhail Baryshnikov, and has since been performed by generations of dancers. Cry is Ailey’s signature solo work which he created as a birthday present for his mother and dedicated ‘to all Black women everywhere – especially our mothers’. The solo, in three parts, brings the audience on a journey of bitter sorrow, brutal hardship and ecstatic joy. Revelations uses American spirituals, song-sermons, gospel songs and holy blues to explore the places of deepest grief and holiest joy in the soul. It has been performed continuously around the globe since its 1960 premiere and is the most widely seen modern dance work in the world.

Programme B (21st Century Creations) brings together new works by Aszure Barton, Jamar Roberts and Kyle Abraham. BUSK by internationally renowned choreographer Aszure Barton explores the human experience in all its resilience, fragility and tenderness. The world premiere of Jamar Roberts’ In a Sentimental Mood uses original composition by Duke Ellington and four jazz standards given a twist by composer Rafiq Bhatia to study an intimate domestic scene, love and desire. Acclaimed choreographer Kyle Abraham celebrates Black culture and Black music in Are You in Your Feelings? performed to a mixtape of soul, hip-hop and R&B.

Ronald K. Brown’s evocative Dancing Spirit uses movement from Cuba, Brazil and the United States to conjure dancing spirits who embody Judith Jamison’s elegance, vision, dignity and generosity. The programme is completed with Ailey’s Revelations.

Tuesday 26 - Saturday 30 September
Tickets: £18 - £65

In February last year, the celebrated Kyiv City Ballet left Ukraine’s capital for a much-anticipated tour of France. Just a day later Russia invaded, leaving the company stranded and unable to return home.

Over a year on, the war still rages, and these exceptional dancers remain in exile. With extraordinary resilience, the company has gone from strength to strength, training daily, devising new programmes, and reprising classic works.

As part of their first tour to the UK, the company presents a varied programme of excerpts from some of their favourite pieces including Les Sylphides, a fragment from the ballet Tribute to Peace(choreographed by Ivan Kozlov), Carmen, Sirtaki, and Men of Kyiv (a Ukrainian folk dance).

Zinzi Minott                                                                                                           LILIAN BAYLIS STUDIO
Black on Black
Friday 29 - Saturday 30 September
Tickets: £17

Zinzi Minott makes her Lilian Baylis Studio debut with Black on Black, a solo dance performance exploring Queerness, Blackness and the body as an archive. The work is accompanied by a specially commissioned score by Gaika.

Set within a multi-screen visual installation of archive footage and material from Minott’s personal image collection, the work explores dance as a form of labour, testing the limits of the body through repetition, across duration, to exhaustion. Minott asked an extended network of Black dancers and artists to donate movement phrases to this “physical archive of dance”. As Minott performs, these phrases are altered, eroded by exhaustion, commenting on the erasure of Black dance histories and Queer cultural practice and highlighting the vulnerable existence of Black and Queer lives.

Black on Black aims to archive Black dance live with the body, making it one of the first performative archives of its kind.

Commissioned by CONTINUOUS, a partnership between BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Arts and Siobhan Davies Studios, supported by an Arts Council England National Lottery Project Grant and generous support from the John Ellerman Foundation and made possible with additional support from the Brent Biennial 2022, 'In the House of my Love', produced by Metroland Cultures, London.

MÁM, an Irish word meaning mountain pass, is a work of contrasts where local mythology takes centre stage embracing centuries of tradition and a rich musical heritage. This timely production acknowledges how life’s polarities can on occasion come together and find resolution.

SOME TIMES                                                                                                             WORLD PREMIERE
Wednesday 11 - Friday 13 October
Tickets: £17

J Neve Harrington makes her Lilian Baylis Studio debut with SOME TIMES, a new full-length work performed in the round by an intergenerational cast of professional artists alongside a community cast of local young adults.

SOME TIMES considers the different ways in which time organises experiences referencing the climate crisis, the digital space, geological movements and distinctly human time scales. The production offers possibilities for how we might hold space together, across generations, at this moment in time. Harrington leans into neurodivergent ways of processing information, taking audiences on a sensory journey of different ways to experience time, changing patterns, and relationships.

The show explores the dichotomy of lightness and darkness and asks: what should we pay attention to in the present, and might that choice impact future generations?

Co-Commissioned by Dance City and South East Dance. Supported by Arts Council England and Bonnie Bird Choreography Fund. Supported through residencies with Siobhan Davies Dance, FABRIC and Old Diorama Arts Centre.

FORBIDDEN
Friday 13 - Saturday 14 October
Tickets: £15 - £37

In this powerful solo work, Aditi Mangaldas reflects on a question that is more urgent than ever. Why are women the world over who have the courage to own their sexual desire, sanctioned, judged, controlled, hounded and eventually punished? Whether in conservative or liberal societies.

Over three parts, with an international creative team and a distinctive dance vocabulary drawing on contemporary dance based on Kathak, FORBIDDEN looks to explore the root of this fear and persecution. Referencing a wide range of cultures from across the globe, Mangaldas will journey through emotions and experiences, reclaiming her desire.

The show features an ensemble of internationally acclaimed male dancers, with an intoxicating mix of contemporary pop, Latin and flamenco music.

Returning to Dance Umbrella Festival for 2023, the South African dance group Via Katlehong Dance collaborates with two leading European dance makers, Amala Dianor and Marco da Silva Ferreira to create Via Injabulo, presenting a feast of explosive dance and rousing rhythms from the South African townships.

In førm Inførms, Marco da Silva Ferreira explores the collective identity of pantsula - a vibrant and passionate dance that came into existence during the apartheid regime – shaking house dance and other street dance styles into a cocktail of pulsating energy.

In Emaphakathini, Franco-Senegalese choreographer Amala Dianor draws on performers’ personal histories, pulling down boundaries between people and dance disciplines, to create an “in-between space”, or Emaphakathini in Zulu.

Monday 30 - Tuesday 31 October
Tickets: £22 - £27

Maud Le Pladec presents the UK premiere of Twenty-seven perspectives, a nod to an exploratory work by conceptual Swiss artist Rémy Zaugg – titled 27 esquisses perceptives (27 perceptive sketches) – in which Zaugg breaks down a Cézanne painting into its elementary pieces.

Inspired by this approach, Le Pladec, in tandem with composer Pete Harden, uses the structure of Franz Schubert’s famous ‘Unfinished Symphony’ to craft a series of reinterpreted fragments. Le Pladec reinvents her own choreographic expression, entrusting ten dancers from a range of backgrounds with her scaled down movement.

At Sadler’s Wells in 2017, Le Pladec co-directed the solo Hunted. That year, she became Director of the Centre chorégraphique national d’Orléans in France.

In a blistering and exhilarating take on the Argentine Malambo, Malevo brings its blazing raw talent to the UK for the first time. Malevo presents a fresh, energetic, modern-day interpretation of the traditional folkloric music and dance of the Gauchos, the South American Cowboys.

Malevo was created by director, choreographer, and dancer, Matías Jaime. This dynamic all-male troupe has reimagined the Malambo, infusing the dance with elements of flamenco and pulsating drumming live onstage. The choreography combines the use of boleadoras - a leather and stone hunting tool used by Gauchos - with pounding movements, energetic stomping (zapateados) and lightning footwork (cepillados).

Malevo has worked with Latin pop star Ricky Martin, reached the semi-final on America’s Got Talent, and has performed around the world.

Friday 17 - Saturday 18 November
Tickets: £15 - £37

Emanuel Gat’s award-winning production LOVETRAIN2020 is a choreographic ode to the sound and vibe of the 80s. Drawing on the iconic hits of 80s British duo Tears for Fears (‘Mad world’, ‘Shout’, ‘Everybody Wants to Rule The World’, ‘Change’, ‘Sowing The Seeds Of Love’), Gat’s show embodies the music’s utopic drive and epic groove.

With adventurous costumes by Thomas Bradley and lighting by Gat himself, this performance – a story of people moving forward as they come together, drift apart, push, pull, and question each other – swings vigorously between stark silence and sing-alongs.

Performing to an ethereal soundtrack, the dancers interact with each other - in pairs, groups, or as an ensemble - as well as with multiple large LED panels that are filled with moving shapes, colours, and images.

Created in 1948, New York City Ballet (NYCB) is one of the foremost ballet companies in the world. Founded by choreographer George Balanchine and arts patron Lincoln Kirstein, NYCB is known for its contemporary style and athletic poise.

Justin Peck’s Rotunda, featuring a commissioned score from American composer Nico Muhly, creates a sense of community through mirroring and ensemble groupings, inspiring reflection and intrigue.

Blanchine’s Duo Concertant is an animated dance for a neoclassical couple in which the dancers periodically stop and listen to the onstage musicians before ending with a poignant scene in a pool of light on a dark stage. Based on the composition by Stravinski, George Balanchine premiered Duo Concertant at NYCB’s Stravinski Festival in 1972.

Pam Tanowitz’ Gustave Le Gray No.1 is set to Caroline Shaw’s piano composition ‘Gustave le Gray’. Four dancers in flowing red costumes repeat sharp yet sweeping phrases and interact with the onstage pianist, who continues to play even as they move the grand piano and musician from one side of the stage to the other.

Love Letter (on shuffle) by Kyle Abraham reunites the pop stylings of singer, songwriter, and producer James Blake and eye-catching costume designs by Giles Deacon, inspiring the NYCB dancers to new physical and emotional heights in a mashup of classical feats and contemporary swagger.

Tuesday 2 - Saturday 6 July 24
Tickets: £15 - 75

Carlos Acosta performs in his adaptation of Georges Bizet and Prosper Mérimée’s story. In his new version, the story’s universal and timeless themes are laid bare in a sparse and powerful setting. Don José falls in love with Carmen and sacrifices everything to be with her. When Carmen becomes infatuated with the toreador Escamillo she loses interest in Don José, whose love quickly turns to violent jealousy.

Acosta plays The Bull, a role he created to represent fate and destiny, which he has been keen to perform since choreographing the ballet to mark his retirement from the Royal Ballet in 2015.

Bizet’s Carmen is one of the most powerful operas ever written. Its gorgeous melodies have secured the opera’s hold on the popular imagination – Escamillo's Toreador Song, Carmen’s Habanera, Don José’s Flower Song and many passages for orchestra and chorus are among the most widely known pieces of Western classical music. Figures as diverse as Marius Petipa, Roland Petit, Alberto Alonso, Mats Ek and Richard Alston have all been drawn to this tale of jealousy and desire.

A snowy stage sets the scene for an icy cold Christmas eve, where the little match girl paces the emptying streets, desperately trying to sell her matches. Along her journey she encounters kindness and cruelty in a fable about family, friendship and hope. The traditional tale is brought to life with music, dance and some unusual instruments – look out for the theremin!

Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic story, this production was created for the stage and has been made into a delightful film for everyone to enjoy. With a powerful message at its heart, The Little Match Girl reminds us of the importance of kindness and to consider those less fortunate than ourselves.

Good- I see that their price range for NYCB is identical to Tiler Peck’s show, which I found reasonable and suited a range of budgets (and sold out). I still think they need a second Balanchine ballet or a Robbins ballet, even if it’s just a short piece, eg Tchaikovsky pas de deux, Other Dances. Or better still, a second programme. 😁
