Carmen in Edinburgh?

Recommended Posts

Today's Guardian has a photo of Osipova, Kittelberger and (Isaac) Hernandez rehearsing for a new production of Carmen to be shown in Edinburgh this December. I've not spotted a reference to it on the forum and have checked the main theatres in Edinburgh, but can't find any info. Does anyone know anything about it?  Given the participants it could be a Sadler's Wells venture, like The Mother, which Osipova did (in Manchester??) one December, prior to a showing at the Wells the next summer.

This, probably?

"Ballet dancers Natalia Osipova alongside Isaac Hernandez as they perform a routine during a photo call ahead of the world premiere of a contemporary dance production of Carmen at The Exchange, Edinburgh International Conference Centre, in Edinburgh. The new production of the classic opera by Didy Veldman is presented by Bird and Carrot Productions in association with The Pleasance."

Oh, please tell me that's Veldman's production which she originally did for Northern Ballet?  I really liked that one, and regretted its loss to the repertory.

I'm sure it's not an opera production, despite what the blurb may say.

A breathtakingly spectacular interpretative dance drama, based on Georges Bizet's classic opera, Carmen, starring Natalia Osipova.

This Christmas, Bird&Carrot and the Pleasance are delighted to present one of the most popular operas ever written. Bizet’s Carmen tells the tragic story of the downfall of Don José, a soldier seduced by the fiery, daring and uncompromising gypsy.

Since premiering in 1875, Carmen has influenced countless artists, as the subject of multiple adaptations in opera, film, theatre and ballet.

Now, Royal Ballet prima Natalia Osipova and choreographer Didy Veldman present a new adaptation of Bizet’s opera – a ballet combining elements of immersive theatre.

Starring superstar dancers Jason Kittelberger and Isaac Hernandez, emerging stars Eryck Brahmaniaand Hannah Ekholm, and with newly composed music by Dave Price.

The story of Carmen is reimagined in this incredible collaboration of theatre, dance and music, but it remains a passionate tale of love, self doubt and ultimately murder.

With strong theatricality and a quirky sense of humour, Carmen shines new light on a timeless classic.

Two performances only, book now for Christmas
