PetitJeté
Just a quick question for any parents of JAs. I see on the info that they require a towel or exercise mat, and I was wondering what most of the children use? My daughter is due to start in September. My preference would be a towel, as easier to fold into a bag, but in her words she doesn’t want to ‘look like an idiot’! 😂 Any advice/suggestions please? TutuTaxi
My dd has a roll up mat with a handle that slips over it so easy to carry on her shoulder...well done to your dd for getting a place.
PetitJeté
Thank you! What year is your dd in? Would you mind telling me what sort of mat you bought? Are we talking yoga? (can you tell this isn’t my specialist subject!). Just trying to keep the load not too heavy/bulky for the train. Many thanks!
lilly
My dd had a roll up yoga mat and they also need a white towel to use in some of the exercises. Well done Edited June 30, 2018 by lilly
allnewtome
Any yoga mat is fine. Well done on a place. I bought a yoga mat in her favourite colour and she happily carried it herself!
ButterflyBallerina
My DD has a towel she started with the mat but prefers the towel she is the only one in her class with a towel though x
Dancing unicorn
I think it depends on which Centre you are attending. Manchester with Miss Agar, she preferred a white towel for the children to lie on!
PetitJeté
Thanks all! Looks like a yoga mat is the thing. @Dancing unicorn it’s London with Miss Krapf I think. Perhaps we’ll take a towel too on the first day!
sunrise81
At Leeds very few have a mat. Majority is a towel.....and some very brightly coloured ones too!

SissonneDoublee
The PTA have beautiful logo-ed RBS towels, so you might want to hold off buying a new one especially for JAs, as if your DC is anything like mine you will slowly accumulate everything that exists with a RBS logo!

Thanks, that’s good to know! I actually wanted to get her an RBS rucksack, but when I emailed, they said they didn’t know yet when the PTA will be in, and they don’t do online orders, which is a shame. We saw all the merchandise at the audition, but managed to just get away with a notebook!

They are not cheap, but very sturdy and big enough to carry the towel, folder, water bottle, shoes, etc etc and still have space for the tracksuit when they take it off! It has a good selection of pockets too.
PetitJeté
@SissonneDoublee Do you mean the pink shoulder bag? I did look at that. Good to know it would fit in all the essentials, will bear that in mind!

AuntieNora
We were London, everyone had a mat and a small hand towel. A mat seem more comfortable for exercises, especially when on knees! If you go for a towel you can get yoga non slip ones, which my dd used occasionally, if we were going out striaght after class. (But preferred carrying a mat and being comfortable.) Mat straps, over mat bag preferred as quicker and easier to put away.

With the mat, do you mean one that has just straps, rather than it’s own bag?
Balletmum55
Every child bar one in my dd class has a mat, mostly in a separate bag with a shoulder strap for ease of carrying x
PetitJeté
Thanks @Balletmum55! Just another question while I’ve got you, do the girls actually wear those special knickers under their leotard? We ordered them, but my dd thinks they’ll be uncomfortable!

Yes they do wear them but I know what you mean! I also got my dd some alternative nude pants from a dancewear shop that have a discreet waistband and has a little more bottom coverage 🙈 and she mainly wore those though - I think basically as long as they’re nude (you couldn’t wear anything else with that white leotard!! - the teacher doesn’t mind what they wear as long as she can’t see them x (I’ve just looked at them and no labels in them as they’re seamless so can’t tell you the brand I’m afraid) xx Edited July 3, 2018 by Balletmum55 Spelling
PetitJeté
Thanks @Balletmum55! I think she’d rather not wear anything under the leotard, but I can understand if they prefer the girls do. We’ll start with the ones we have and see how we go!
jenesaisquoi
I don’t think the nude knickers are mandatory. DD doesn’t wear anything under hers and most of the others in her JA class don’t either! For any that do want knickers, the “silky” Dance pants are excellent (and no label so may be the ones you’re talking about balletmum55) and very comfortable. Yes just straps has 2 loops for rolled mat with shoulder strap. re knickers my daughter finds them comfortable always wears for any dance class. Just need to find brand that works for you. I don’t think she liked the recommended ones. I couldn’t tell you which ones she uses, she picks them and adds to my basket! I just pay! 😂
