  1. Thinking about the timing of those Ashton bills and the Sarasota visit: together with the RB and ENB (Albert Hall version) Swan Lakes, June is looking very congested. If NYCB are visiting then as well scheduling everything I want to see could look very tricky!
  2. What a wonderful, uplifting article - but it feels like an honour to have them visiting rather than the other way around.
  3. In terms of works being performed, I'm only interested in the Ashton and MacMillan mixed bills, which are very welcome - though I would have preferred Symphonic Variations or another neglected Ashton to Rhapsody. The Sarasota programmes (the press release says there will be two) are a huge bonus. The full lengths are either not my cup of tea (Winter's Tale, Dante) or all about the casting. As the opera season is no great shakes IMO - Elektra the only dead cert - I might be letting my Friends membership lapse until Spring or Summer booking. This isn't an expression of anger or disappointment, just that I don't expect I'll be getting any value out of it until then.

  5. He seems unlikely to guest at ROH any time soon but: Shklyarov!
  6. There's one national dance critic who I've seen at the RB a few times mid-run and she hasn't written about the performance afterwards. As I don't know what many critics look like, don't go that often compared to some others here, don't sit in the expensive seats and generally don't spend much time in the bars, I wonder if she isn't the only one.
  7. Yes completely agree! On the Opera side too you often get demonstrations by Jette Parker artists and occasionally someone really stands out: I remember seeing one for Cosi fan tutte and thinking "Who is that?" - it was Jennifer Davis, who became something of a sensation when she jumped into the high-profile new Lohengrin.
  8. I'm based at the other end of the country so haven't been paying enough attention: does Northern Ballet no longer cross the Pennines?
  9. Two AA programmes announced for the Edinburgh Festival, 23rd to 25th August: https://www.eif.co.uk/whats-on/category/dance
  10. Not credited. https://www.roh.org.uk/tickets-and-events/40/cinderella-by-frederick-ashton/cast-list/51618
  11. I don't always read his reviews but those I have don't make him sound keen on anything.
  12. I'm finding it interesting that some people who didn't think much of this production earlier in the run are being won over. Is this because it improves with repeat viewing or because it has "settled in"? (FWIW, I first saw it just after the broadcast and liked it straight away.)
  13. It's a good idea but feels too indiscriminate to me! I'd rather there were less of an expectation from the start that most principals will be cast in most lead roles that habitually have long runs. An alternative is to have fewer principals to start with.
  14. I've just been nosing around on the website: the two performances next week where sales were looking sluggish are definitely looking better. Have they unleashed the students on them? Anyway, after a slow start I think sales have been pretty good considering the length of the run. Maybe they priced it right after all!
  15. It's probably another of my minority opinions, but Don Q is one of those ballets I can take or leave. I enjoy it very well when I'm there, but I won't feel compelled to see it multiple times.
  16. From the list of what they're doing next season, Liebeslieder Walzer is top of my wishlist - never seen it! I don't know if they would normally tour with something that has a proper set though?
  17. Interesting to see the MacMillan and Ashton - both pieces she herself danced of course. That's one way to announce your arrival!
  18. I can see some of us (including me) will be keeping an eagle eye on the SW schedule!
  19. The press release says 2024; looking at other commitments, I think the only possible dates are: 4th to 17th March 25th March to 21st April (the latter part very unlikely?) After 9th June I won't be booking any holidays during these dates.

    Proms 2023

Very pleased to see Lise Davidsen scheduled for the last night after her planned appearance was cancelled last year (the Queen had just died).
  21. O'Sullivan/Sambe is by all accounts a successful partnership.
  22. Probably my favourite moment of the last Ring cycle at ROH was when after the final Gotterdammerung the entire stage crew - some positioned high on the set, hard hats and all - received a curtain call.
